Minus and Pickles are building a snow man

I'm sure you love the first snow of the winter as much as I do. Well it's finally here, so Pickles and Minus couldn't loose the opportunity os spending the afternoon out there playing with snow. Making a snowman was, of course, their first idea. They´ve been trying for years, but eventually there's always something worng with it.

- "Pickles, Im sure this time we´re gonna make it, you'll see! I'm taking some top hats from my grandpa. Nothing can go wrong."

- "Minus, you always say the same thing by¡ut at the end you always end up making a mess."

- "Nooo, come on, you'll see!"

La primera nevada del invierno llegó al fin, y Pickles y Minus no podían perderse la oportunidad de pasar una tarde en la nieve. La idea principal era hacer un muñeco de nieve. Llevan años intentándolo, pero al final siempre falla algo.

- "Pickles, esta vez lo conseguiremos, ya verás! Voy  a llevar unos sombreros de mi abuelo. Nada puede fallar."

- "Minus, siempre dices lo mismo y al final la acabas liando."

- "Que nooooooo, ya verás!"

-"But first, let's go make a snow angel!!

-"Hahahaaa! Look at this! This is so much fun. Let me see yours!

- "Ha ha ha! And now... snow ball fight!"

- "Pero primero vamos a hacer unos ángeles en la nieve!!"

- "Jajajjaaaaa! Miraaaa! A ver cómo ha quedado el tuyo?"

- "Ja ja jaaaa!! Ahora pelea de bolas de nieve!"

- "No Minus! Let's make the snow man first. Look, we make big snow balls, like this one here."
- "Ok, you make the snow balls, I'll put everything else."

- "No Minus! Vamos a hacer el muñeco primero. Mira, hacemos bolas así."
- " Venga, tú haz las bolas, yo le pongo lo demás."

- Aha! Finally! Snow ball fight!"

- "Stay, you traitor! You won't escape! Take this one."

- " Oh no, you bit me! I'll take revenge!"

- "Ahá!! Ahora si!! Pelea de bolas de nieveee!"

- "Detente, traidor! No escaparás! Toma"

- "Oh no, me diste! Me vengaré!"

It looks that finally they built the snow man. Look at them now, they look so well behaved you could even think they are growing up. And what a blast they had in the snow! I wish it snowed again soon and we can do it again.

Bueno, pues parece que finalmente lo consiguieron! Parece que estos muchachos realmente están madurando... Y qué bien lo han pasado en su tarde en la nieve! Ojalá nieve pronto otra vez y podamos repetir todos juntos.

Santa's hat

What a cold days we are having lately! A lot of cold and fog... This morning I've seen Minus ready to go to school in his orange T-shirt and I've almost collapsed. "Please, please Minus, go and wrap yourself! It's very cold, put on a nice and warm jumper and a hat!" (So mother-ish, I know...)

Estos días está haciendo más frío y mucha niebla. Esta mañana he visto que Minus iba a salir de casa con su camiseta naranja y casi me da un ataque. Le he dicho: "Minus, por favor, abrígate bien, que hoy hace mucho frío!! Ponte jersey y gorro!!" (Super madre, no?)

Minus has huffed and puffed a little but he's acceded to go to his room to change his clothes. And 5 minutes later, believe or not, he's made his entrance wearing a Santa's hat! ... "Really Minus, a Santa's hat? There's no other hat that you can use?" I'm still wide-eyed...

Minus ha resoplado un par de veces pero se ha ido a su habitación a cambiarse. Al cabo de 5 minutos me aparece así, con un gorro de Papá Noel puesto... "Pero Minus, no había otro gorro, de verdad?" Me ha dejado con los ojos como platos. Aún no me lo creo.

Nothing to do, he wants to go to school wearing his Santa's hat. Scout's been laughing at him all morning, but he doesn't care. Ok then, it's alright. After all, who cares? Wear the hat you want to, kid!

Que nada, que quiere irse al colegio con su gorro de Papá Noel. Scout lleva toda la mañana riéndose de él, pero a Minus no le importa. Se ha ido al cole con su gorro. Pues muy bien. Al fin y al cabo, qué más da? Que se ponga el gorro que quiera!

When Minus and Pickles went to the swimmingpool and they got a sunburn

Is as hot as hell here in Madrid... around 40 degrees almost everyday, and this is not good, not for humans neither for amigurumis. How to deal with this: going to the swimmingpool! Since I told Minus and Pickles that I'll bring them to the swimmingpool they've been with the swimsuit on. Everyday they would put on the suit and play "Sharks and piranhas". Finally we went, and this is what happened there...

En Madrid hace un calor insoportable... casi todos los días rondamos los 40 grados, y eso no nos gusta ni a los humanos ni a los amigurumis. Solución:

NOS VAMOS A LA PISCINA!

Desde que les dije a Minus y a Pickles que les iba a llevar a la piscina no se han quitado el bañador. Se lo han puesto todas las tardes, en casa, para jugar a "tiburones y pirañas". Por fin fuimos, y esto es lo que pasó....

Actually, they're not very used to water and sun, but every time they have the chance they enjoy it like crazy. Specially Minus, who loves getting tanned. But... can an amigurumi get tanned?

En realidad ellos no están muy acostumbrados al agua y al sol, pero en cuanto tienen oportunidad lo disfrutan a tope. Sobretodo Minus, que sólo piensa en ponerse moreno. Pero... puede un amigurumi ponerse moreno...?

-"Minus, do you want to play with the beach ball?"

-"Ummmm... yes, yes... later... now I'm busy here with the sun"

-"Oh boy..."

-"Minus quieres jugar un rato a la pelota?"

-"Mmmm... si, si... luego... ahora estoy tomando el sol"

-"Jo..."

-"Hey Minus! Look! I'm going for gold!"

-"Uhmm... yes, yes, later..."

-"Olympic champion Pickles is about to perform his famous triple pike...!"

-"Mira, Minus! Voya tirarme de cabeza!!"

-"Mmmm... si, si, luego, luego..."

-"Mira Minus! Estoy haciendo el muerto en el agua! Vienes?"

-"Cómo me voy a quemar, si soy de algodón?!"

-"Oops, my head... I think I might overdid it... I'd better go into the water now... Aaahhh, my whole body hurts!!"
Well... now we know that amigurumis DO sunburn, so take care with the sun!

-"Ufff, me duele la cabeza... creo que he tomado mucho sol... me voy al agua... Aaahhh, me duele todo el cuerpo!!"
Pues sí, ahora ya sabemos que los amigurumis también necesitan protección cuando toman el sol... quién me lo iba a decir!

When it was Minus' birthday and Scout ate all the cookies

It's been a year since I created Minus, started my online shop and organized the first CAL with Wasel Wasel... My amigurumi family has increased since then and we've had the chance to see them in many different situations and adventures. Easy and day-to-day adventures, but adventures after all.

Por fin llegó el cumpleaños de Minus! Estábamos todos esperando nerviosos... hace aproximadamente un año que lo creé, que lancé la tienda, que organicé el primer CAL con Wasel Wasel... Desde entonces se han ido incorporando nuevos miembros a mi familia de amigurumis y hemos tenido oportunidad de verles en acción en varias "aventuras". Aventuras sencillas, cotidianas, pero aventuras al fin y al cabo.

So, yesterday we organized a big party. Everybody was there! Minus and Scout were excited waiting for the others to come.

-"Minus, you hand me a cookie?" 

-"No Scout, we have to wait for our guests to come. You'll eat later." 

-"But it's not for me, it's for Banana!" 

-"Scout, fake bears don't eat real cookies"

-"What do you mean fake...?"

Así que ayer organizamos una gran fiesta para la ocasión. No faltó nadie! Minus y Scout esperaban nerviosos a los demás invitados. 

-"Minus, me das una galleta?" 

-"No Scout, tenemos que esperar a los demás, luego comerás." 

-"Pero si es que no es para mi, es para Banana" 

-"Scout, los osos de peluche no comen galletas..."

-"Cómo que de peluche...?"

Pickles and Karl arrived first. Pickles was so excited! He had this very special present that Minus was going to love and he couldn't wait... the last installment of "Pirates and Corsairs" by H.K. Franklin! Minus and Pickles are addicted to this saga of novels about Henry "the long", the most scary and bloodthirsty pirate of the Caribbean seas.

-"Minus, can I take a cookie now?"
-"No Scout, wait for the rest!"
-"Hmmmm"

Los primeros en llegar fueron Pickles y Karl. Qué contento estaba Pickles! Traía un regalo muy especial para Minus y estaba deseando dárselo... la última entrega de "Piratas y Corsarios" de H.K. Franklin!! Minus y Pickles están enganchadísimos a esta serie de novelas sobre Henry "El Largo", el pirata más temible y sanguinario de todo el Caribe.

-"Minus, puedo coger ya una galleta?"
-"No Scout, espérate a que estemos todos!"
-"Hmmmm"

Scout didn't like her brother's telling off at all and set herself aside the group. There she stayed for a while, in silence and the others were opening presents and talking about Henry The Long. But when Scout is quiet....

A Scout no le hizo ninguna gracia la reprimenda de su hermano y se apartó del grupo. Ahí se quedó un rato callada, mientras los demás abrían paquetes y hablaban de Henry "El Largo". Y cuando Scout está mucho rato callada....

-"Hey, Conchita is here!"

-"Good, and she's bringing the cakes!! Yay!"

-"Come Conchita, sit here and put your hat on!"

-"Ya está aquí Conchita!"

-"Bien, y trae los pasteles!! Yupiii!"

-"Conchita, ven, siéntate aquí y ponte tu gorro!"

-"Scout, now you ca..."

-"Wait a minute Minus, I think something is happening there..."

-"But... why are all the cookies on the floor?"

-"It wasn't me!"

-"Scout, ahora ya pued..."

-"Un momento Minus, creo que está pasando algo ahí..."

-"Pero... porqué están las galletas en el suelo?"

-"Yo no he sido!"

I told you... if Scout is quiet for a long time is because there's something in her mind... and not good... While everybody was talking and looking at Conchita's cake, she and Banana took good care of the cookies... She says that real bears don't like eating from plates, they like floor better.

Ya os dije que si Scout está callada mucho rato es porque algo está tramando... Mientras todos estaban pendientes de los regalos y del pastel de Conchita, ella y Banana se hicieron cargo de las galletas... Dice que es que a Banana le gustan más en el suelo, que los platos no son para osos de verdad.

Minus' new armchair

Minus has a new friend. Her name is Actante Dourada and last Christmas she gave Minus the most wonderful present ever: a blue armchair with clouds, a special place to take a nap.

Minus tiene una nueva amiga. Se llama Actante Dourada y estas navidades le ha hecho el regalo más maravilloso de su vida: un sillón azul con nubes, para dormir la siesta.

Is well known that Minu's favourite activities are taking naps, eating cookies and watching pirates movies, so this armchair is just perfect for all of them. Besides, he's using Conchita's blanket, you can't ask for more.

Dormir la siesta es una de las actividades favoritas de Minus, después de comer galletas y ver pelis de piratas. Y me dice que este sillón es perfecto para ello. Además está usando la colcha que le regaló Conchita, no se puede pedir más.

Minu is all the time talking about his new friend "she's so nice, she's so smart, she's so pretty, bla bla bla..." Now he says that he wants to go on a trip and visit her! "But Minus, do you know where Galicia is? It's so far from here!" "I don't care, I want to go!"

Minus me habla todo el día de su nueva amiga, que si es muy simpática, que si es muy lista, que si es muy guapa... Ahora me ha dicho que quiere ir de viaje a su casa para hacerle una visita! "Pero Minus, tú sabes dónde está Galicia? Eso está muy lejos!" "Me da igual, yo quiero ir!"

He has his luggage ready. Conchita has borrowed him her jumper because she say's it's very cold in there. Minus says he's also bringing the blanket, Robinson Crusoe's book and cookies for the trip. "Have fun Minus! Have a good trip! Send postcards!" "Ok!"

Ya ha preparado la maleta. Conchita le ha prestado su jersey para que no pase frío. Minus dice que se va a llevar también la colcha, el libro de Robinson Crusoe y un paquete de galletas para el viaje. "Pásalo bien Minus! Buen viaje! Manda postales!!!" "Vale!"

Decorating the tree with Conchita

It's Christmas, finally. This is Conchita's favorite time of the year. She's been making herself the Christmas presents, for months. You could say that Conchita likes traditions, and specially... decorating the tree. This year she's invited Minus and Pickles to help her (not sure this is a good idea...) and have a big cookie party after the hard work. 

Por fin es Navidad. Es el momento favorito del año para Conchita. Pasa meses preparando regalos que confecciona ella misma y buscando nuevas recetas. Se podría decir que a Conchita le gustan las tradiciones y la que más... decorar el árbol. Este año ha invitado a Minus y Pickles para que le ayuden  (no se yo si esa es muy buena idea, pero bueno...)  y ha preparado una gran merienda para después.

Didn't I tell you? Not a good idea at all! Every time Conchita puts something on the tree Pickles takes it and puts it on his head! And Minus, he's been eating cookies the whole time, he haven't even moved a finger to help Conchita... what a mess... "Minus, don't eat all the cookies!" "What, me?! I haven't eaten any..." "But Minus, you have one in your mouth right now!"

No veis como no era buena idea? Cada vez que Conchita pone algo en el árbol, Pickles lo quita y se lo pone en la cabeza! Pero es que Minus directamente se ha ido a comer galletas y no le está haciendo ningún caso al árbol... qué desastre... "Minus, no te las comas todas!" "Yo? No me he comido ninguna..." "Pero si tienes una en la boca!"

Well, looks like finally they made it! It hasn't been easy but it's done and the most important part is that they've had a lot of fun. "But Minus, you haven't moved a finger..." "That's not true, I've told you where to put the star!" "Come on, what a shameless you are, hahahaaaaa!"

Bueno, al final parece que lo han conseguido! Ha costado pero al final lo han hecho y lo más importante es que se han reído un montón. "Pero Minus, tú no has hecho nada..." "Eso no es verdad, yo os he dicho dónde teníais que poner la estrella!" "Halaaa, qué cara más dura tienes, jajajaaaa!"

After working so hard, it's presents time. Conchita has spent a lot of time knitting them and now she's very excited to see her friends reaction. She's crocheted a granny squares blanket for Minus and knitted a red Christmas jumper for Pickles.

Después del duro trabajo llega el momento de los regalos. Conchita ha pasado mucho tiempo tejiéndolos y está nerviosa por ver qué opinan sus amigos. Para Minus ha hecho una mantita de granny squares para sus siestas y para Pickles un jersey rojo muy navideño.

Minus and Pickles are so happy with their presents, they're already wearing them. Conchita is also wearing her Christmas jumper and now they're ready to devour all the cookies (if there's any left...)

Minus y Pickles están encantados con sus regalos y ya los han estrenado. Conchita también se ha puesto su jersey navideño y ahora ya están listos para merendar. Si Minus les ha dejado alguna galleta, claro...

Entrevista en Labores del Hogar

Quién no ha visto una revista de Labores del Hogar alguna vez por su casa, o por casa de su abuela? Tanto si te gustan las labores como si no, conoces la revista ya que siempre ha estado ahí, dando vueltas por los kioskos y las casas de tus tías. Pues bien, yo era una de las que la compraba de vez en cuando. Sobre todo cuando veía que llevaba más cosas de ganchillo y... los especiales de Navidad... me encantan...

Lo que más me gusta es encontrar ejemplares antiguos, de lo años 50, 60, 70... si soléis ver revistas de labores antiguas os habréis dado cuenta de que en realidad casi todo lo que son modas ahora, que parece que se lo acaba de inventar alguien que pasaba por ahí, son cosas que ya hacían nuestras madres y abuelas. Quizá con otro nombre, otros materiales, otro estilo...

A las revistas de labores les ha costado un poco actualizarse. Durante muchos años no han sido demasiado atractivas para la gente joven pero afortunadamente han sabido reaccionar y últimamente se aprecia el esfuerzo que hacen por renovar su estilo y contenido. Son revistas que abarcan todo tipo de labores y generaciones y tienen que tener contento a todo el mundo, lo cual nunca es fácil.

Por todo esto y mucho más, me siento tan orgullosa y feliz de aparecer en el último número de la revista, el de diciembre 2015. Me dicen que salgo en el New York Times y no me pongo tan contenta!

Minus no se lo puede creer, nunca había salido en una revista! Está tan emocionado que la mira todos los días, y me pregunta "Pero de verdad soy yo?" "Claro! No lo ves? Este eres tú, ahí están Pickles, Conchita, Victoria, las gallinas... Estáis todos!" "Ala, qué guay...."

Pickles también está super contento, le he regalado un ejemplar de la revista y dice que la va a guardar para siempre. El otro día se la llevaron al cole, porque había un compañero que no se creía lo de la revista. Al final casi se la confisca el profesor porque estaban revolucionando a toda la clase...

Así que... ya sabéis! Si queréis saber un poquito más sobre mi, mis proyectos y el porqué de todo ésto, me encontraréis en el kiosko durante el mes de diciembre!

Changing the recipe, Minus and Pickles XL

Are you the kind of person that always changes the recipes? Adding a little bit of this, removing a little bit of that, changing one ingredient for another... Well, I am. I've tried to change it, I swear, but I can't. I know it sounds weird coming from a person that makes "recipes", but I can't help it.

Como sabéis, este veranos organizamos unos CAL para tejer a Minus y a Pickles. Yo he tejido ya muchos, creedme... pero no podía quedarme de brazos cruzados, tenía que participar también! Además, os tengo que confesar que era el primer CAL en el que participaba. Así que lo que se me ocurrió es que, ya que tenía que volver a tejerlos, por lo menos iba a variar de material para obtener un resultado distinto.

Last summer we organized a CAL to crochet Minus and Pickles, and since I wanted to participet myself, but I didn't want to make just the same amigurumi that I've already crocheted hundreds of times, I decided to change the material and the crochet hook to make it more exciting.

Cuando estuve en Brasil el año pasado me traje unos cuantos rollos de cuerda de algodón, o barbante como lo llaman ahí. Lo puedes encontrar en varios grosores y en muchos colores todos preciosos. Creo que ya os he comentado en alguna ocasión que me está siendo bastante difícil encontrar este tipo de cuerdas aquí en Amsterdam, por lo que en cuanto voy de viaje y veo algo parecido aprovecho para comprar, aunque sea en unos pocos colores.

Last time I went to Brazil I bought a few skeins of this cotton cord that they call barbante. I love this material, but I can't find it here in Amsterdam, so every time I travel and I find something similar I try to buy some. 

Es uno de mis materiales favoritos. Es algodón, pero muy gordo y muy rústico. En Brasil es muy usado para hacer ganchillo, para tejer cosas del hogar como alfombras o tapetes. El que yo usé es el número 6 y aunque en la etiqueta te dicen que es para agujas de 3mm o 3,5mm yo lo tejo con 5.5mm mínimo, ya que es bastante gordo. Incluso usando una aguja de 5,5mm tengo que ir parando a ratos ya que me duelen las manos, igual que me pasó con el cesto de yute, por lo que, sinceramente, no se cómo será tejer eso con una aguja del 3...

Now I have this 2 huge Minus and Pickles that I love to hug. Next challenge is to crochet one very very small, with a 1mm hook, and a XXL one, with zpagetti and a 10 or 12mm hook. I can't wait to see the effect!

Ahora tengo un Pickles y un Minus super grandes a los que es un gustazo abrazar. El siguiente reto será hacer unos pequeñitos, con aguja de 1mm o 1,5mm y otros XXL con trapillo y una aguja del 10 o de 12mm. Estoy deseando ver los resultados!

Si eres como yo, de las que no pueden seguir una receta al pie de la letra y siempre tienes que añadir alguna novedad, o hacer algún experimento, te recomiendo este tipo de pruebas con los patrones que compres, o que hagas tú misma. Prueba con distintos materiales, colores... El resultado puede ser totalmente distinto y sorprendente, y de esta forma le sacarás mucho más partido a tu patrón y aprenderás a manejarte con distintos tamaños de aguja, lo cual te dará mucha experiencia.
