Marina Opina: AMIGURUMI by Jennifer Ramírez

What a great time one has when one learns to make something with their own hands. With the joy of something taking shape and in turning into a creature, like is the case of amigurimi. Some of us do it has a hobby and others dedicate themselves to it and make that passion a way of life. 

But have you ever asked yourself where the  Amigurumi come from? 

Qué bien se lo pasa un@ cuando aprende a hacer algo con sus manos. Cuánto se disfruta cuando ese algo coge forma y, por ejemplo, se convierte en una figura como es el caso del amigurumi. Muchos lo hacemos como hobby e incluso otros se dedican a ello haciendo de su pasión un modo de vida. Pero, te has preguntado alguna vez cuál es el origen del Amigurumi?

Jennifer Ramírez, who likes to think of herself as a ‘hook ninja’, alongside her partner are ‘The Sun and the Turtle’. This Colombian emigrated in Finland, dedicates her time collecting her findings to document the beginnings of the amigurumi in a comprehensible manner. Jennifer had her first encounter with amigurumi when she moved to Finland, while looking for a hobby with which to amuse herself and help to make the transition easier. I feel very identified with the idea of her googling a way to knit a stuffed toy and encountering the amigurumi phenomenon that made her discover a whole new world (high five, Jennifer!).

Jennifer Ramírez, a quién le gusta pensarse como una “hook ninja” junto a su pareja son The Sun and the Turtle. Esta colombiana emigrada a Finlandia, ha dedicado tiempo a recopilar  sus hallazgos para documentar los orígenes del amigurumi de manera comprensible.

Jennifer tuvo su primer contacto con el amigurumi cuando se mudó a Finlandia, mientras buscaba un hobby que le entretuviese y le ayudase a hacer el cambio más llevadero. Me siento muy identificada al saber que mientras googleaba formas de tejer un muñeco se encontro con el fenómeno del amigurumi y eso le hizo descubrir un mundo nuevo (high five, Jennifer).

If you want to find out more about this craft that has gained so many followers  over the last few years and focus more on the history than on the techniques or patterns, then this is the book you are looking for.

‘The Sun and the Turtle’ are inspired by kawaii aesthetics for their designs; kawaii  being a term taken from the popular Japanese culture present in all areas beyond just toys, meaning cute or tender: big heads, pink cheeks and expressive eyes. 

Si quieres indagar más sobre esta técnica que ha ganado tantos adeptos durante los últimos años centrándote más en conocer su historia que en el hecho de encontrar técnicas o patrones, este es el libro al que has de referirte.

The Sun and the Turtle orienta sus diseños hacia la estética kawaii, término tomado de la cultura popular japonesa presente en muchos ámbitos más allá de los juguetes o la estética como tal. El equivalente en español a algo “lindo” o “tierno”: cabezas grandes, mejillas rosadas y ojos expresivos.

An immersion into many concepts related to Japan as some integrate themselves into others; a journey through the different versions that each culture makes of amigurumi. 

A look at how to define these creatures: they are cute, they have personalities. A trip to the source of their inspiration. 

Una inmersión en muchos conceptos relacionados con Japón ya que unos van relacionándose con otros; un viaje a través de las diferentes versiones que cada cultura hace de los amigurumi. Una mirada hacia cómo definir a estos personajes: son monos, tienen personalidad. Un viaje hacia sus fuentes de inspiración.

MY PROJECT

In this case the choice was easy. Because the book is focused on investigating the origins of the amigurumi and does not focus on collecting patterns, the only pattern you can find is Inari the Fox, he is so kawaii and so cute, it is well worth the redundancy.

En este caso la elección era fácil. Debido a que el libro está orientado a investigar los orígenes del amigurumi y no se centra en coleccionar patrones, el único patrón que podrás encontrar es el de Inari the Fox, tan kawaii él y tan mono, valga la redundancia.

Marina Opina: GANCHITOS by Leire Villar & Ingrid Valls

This month I’m overflowing with joy as Maria and I were waiting anxiously for the moment to wish you a very happy Christmas with... THE BOOK. 

What can I tell you that you don’t already know about the digital publication best known as Ganchitos and the divine and talented women that hide behind it? What started as a way of offering accessible, modern and useful patterns FINALLY became the book that we were all waiting for, created by Ingrid (Las Teje y Maneje) and Leire (Ameskeria).

Este mes no quepo en mí del gozo y esperaba ansiosa junto a Maria el momento de felicitaros las navidades con... EL LIBRO. Qué no contaros que no sepáis de la publicación digital conocida como Ganchitos y las divinas y talentosas mujeres que se esconden detrás. Lo que comenzó como una forma de ofrecer patrones modernos, útiles y accesibles se ha convertido POR FIN en el libro que tanto estábamos esperando realizado por Ingrid (Las Teje y Maneje) y Leire (Ameskeria).

Looking at it not only as a collection of patterns but also as the unique object that is a book in itself, I can only say that it has been made with lots of love, effort and attention to detail. From the presentation to the colour palette used for each pattern and the pictures (some of them counting with Señorita Lylo as a special model).

Mirado no sólo como colección de patrones sino también como el objeto único que es en sí un libro, sólo puedo decir que ha sido hecho con cariño, esfuerzo y atención al detalle. Desde la presentación hasta las paletas de colores utilizados para cada patrón y por supuesto, las fotos, algunas de ellas contando con la Srta. Lylo como modelo especial.

Twenty four projects organized by difficulty level and ordered according to the seasons, six per season, with step-by-step pictures and huge diagrams/sketches and graphics.  An original choice and unseen until now when presenting creations that look to offer all-year round useful patterns. Do you have it already? Good! You don’t have it yet? That's fine, you are still in time to get one as a late Christmas gift!

Veinticuatro proyectos organizados según su nivel de dificultad y ordenados de acuerdo a las estaciones del año, seis por temporada, con fotos del paso a paso, esquemas y gráficos. Una disposición original y nada vista hasta ahora a la hora de presentar sus creaciones que busca ofrecer patrones útiles para todo el año. ¿Lo tenéis ya? !Bien¡. ¿No lo tenéis aún? ¡Bien también porque estáis a tiempo de pedírselo a los Reyes!

Sometimes it’s not easy to talk about a book when it moves you; you want to express everything you saw in it, but you also don’t want to spoil the surprise for all of those that are willing to purchase it, to see it with their own eyes and enjoy it without someone telling them the end of the movie before they watch it.

To purchase the book please go to the Gustavo Gili publishing house website, an amazing publishing house and one of our favourites, as we already mentioned when we wrote about Molla Mills’ first book that they published in Spanish. I can not think of a better way of making this a perfect edition.

A veces hablar sobre un libro no es fácil cuando el libro te emociona, porque quieres contar todo lo que has visto en él y a la vez no quieres estropear la sorpresa a todos aquellos que se dispongan a comprarlo para que lo vean con sus propios ojos y lo disfruten sin que alguien les cuente la película antes de verla. Dicho esto: cómo me gustan el delantal, el frutero (qué frutero), la mochila, la corbata… y ya me callo para que seáis vosotros mismos los que lo vayáis descubriendo.

Si seguís Ganchitos en las redes sociales podréis acceder a toda la información sobre cómo haceros con sus patrones y en su blog encontraréis toda la información relacionada. Para conseguir el libro, visitad la web de la editorial Gustavo Gili, maravilla de editorial y favoritísima, como ya comentaba cuando hablamos del primer libro de Molla Mills que publicaron en español. No se me ocurriría ninguna otra forma de hacer de ésta una edición perfecta.

MY PROJECT

I must point out how hard it was to select one project out of all these jewels, but considering that it’s time for cold weather and going back to the fact that the book’s patterns are organized by seasons of the year; what better than to make yourself some beautiful mittens that you can use as soon as possible? You will be able to see that in this pattern, in which the jacquard technique is used, the single crochet stitch is done through the back loop only. I decided to make the mittens in two ways: on one side just as it was indicated through the back loop only and the other doing a normal single crochet so you can see the difference. And just as a side note for the super De Estraperlo fans, the medium brown I used for some of the leaves is the same that is used for Conchita’s body. 

We are sure we will definitely not be the last ones to recommend this book!

He de remarcar cuán ardua fue la tarea de seleccionar un proyecto entre todas esas maravillas, pero considerando que el frío es lo que toca y haciendo mención de nuevo a la estructuración de los patrones según las estaciones del año, ¿qué mejor que hacerse unos mitones bien bonitos que poder usar tan pronto como fuese posible?. Veréis que en los patrones en los que se utiliza la técnica jacquard el punto bajo se hace pasando el hilo solamente por la lazada de detrás. Yo decidí hacer los mitones de dos formas; por un lado tal y como comentaba por la lazada de detrás y por otro haciendo un punto bajo normal para que vieseis la diferencia. Como dato añadido y para las mega fans de De Estraperlo, el marrón medio que utilicé para algunas de las hojas es el mismo que se utiliza para el cuerpo de Conchita.

¡Será por algo que no seremos las primeras ni las últimas que os lo recomienden!

Marina Opina: 300 TRUCOS, TÉCNICAS Y SECRETOS DE GANCHILLO by Jan Eaton

Now that winter is coming (you just thought about Game Of Thrones, I know it) it is the perfect moment for the lost sheeps to return to the path and get back to work, let's say for example, with The Blanket Project. Some of you can proudly say that the mission has been accomplished (I offer to those my warmest congratulations for that) and some others are in that acclimatization process where you make eyes at the sofa and you don´t think about going out so often.

Ahora que se acerca el invierno (acabas de pensar en Juego de Tronos, lo sé) es el momento perfecto para que las ovejas descarriadas vuelvan al redil y retomen sus labores, digamos por ejemplo, con el Proyecto Colcha. Algun@s de vosotros podéis estar orgullos@s de decir que ya es misión cumplida (mis más sinceras felicitaciones por ello) y otr@s estáis en ese proceso de aclimatación en el que se le hacen ojitos al sofá y no se piensa salir de casa tan a menudo.

To ease the arduous task of sitting nice and warm we are going to review the "Compendium of Crochet Techniques" by Jan Eaton. 

Call it a book, call it the bible. And I mean it, because you need to have the manual where you can find all kind of technical explanations and ideas.

Jan Eaton, internationally known by her needlework and textile design has published plenty of books. This particulary is not quite new as it was published a couple of years ago, but it is so useful that it will always help you to find all you need for any kind of project you have in mind, and why not, to give you some other ideas of what to do now and how to make it.

Para facilitar esa ardua tarea de estar sentado a gusto y calentitos, este mes vamos a por "300 trucos, técnicas y secretos de ganchillo" de Jan Eaton. Llámalo libro, llámalo biblia. Y digo esto porque no te puede faltar el manual donde encontrar todo tipo de explicaciones técnicas e ideas.

Jan Eaton, conocida internacionalmente por su manejo de las agujas y diseños textiles, tiene una barbaridad de libros. Este en particular ya tiene unos años, pero es tan útil que siempre encontrarás lo que necesites para cualquier tipo de proyecto que tengas en mente, y por qué no, para darte ideas sobre qué puedes empezar y cómo hacerlo.

This book is divided in several sections and contains (take a good breath): step-by-step photos, diagrams and instructions to guide you through the whole process. From how to choose the needle, the yarn, how to read patterns or charts, all about tension, how to block, how to design scarfs or shawls, explanations of all kind of stitches, intarsia patterns, how to join yarns, how to work in rounds, how to group colours, how to dye yarns, how to fit blocks together... everything. In short, seven chapters that will surely help you to understand how to make everything you can imagine. In addition, there is a section in almost all the chapters called “try it” or “fix it” where you can practice what you've´ve learnt adding some variations.

El libro se divide en varias secciones y contiene (coge aire): fotografías paso a paso, diagramas e instrucciones que sirven de guía en todo momento. Desde cómo elegir la aguja, la lana, cómo leer patrones o esquemas, cómo trabajar con la tensión, cómo bloquear, diseño de piezas tipo bufandas o chales, explicaciones sobre todos los tipos de puntos, patrones de intarsia, cómo unir las lanas, trabajar en vueltas, agrupar colores, teñir lanas, unir piezas... todo. En definitiva, siete capítulos que te ayudarán sin duda a entender cómo hacer todo lo que te puedas imaginar. Además, en casi todas las unidades encontrarás un apartado llamado “prueba” o “consejos” donde podrás practicar lo aprendido introduciendo variaciones.

Having said that, if you were looking for a new source of inspiration, there you go. Worst case scenario is that you find yourself planning how to make another blanket :)

Lo dicho; si buscabas una nueva fuente de inspiración, aquí la tienes. Lo más malo que te puede pasar es que te líes y te pongas a planear una segunda colcha :)

Marina Opina: CROCHETTERIE by Molla Mills

Oh my gosh! Hot off the press review! I am thrilled to write a review about Molla Mills´ latest book release... Crochetterie! a.k.a Virkkuri 3

If I was already over the moon when I started collaborating with this section because I did it speaking about Molla Mills as I plead guilty of being a big fan of hers, I do feel happy as a clam again because we are bringing you something that is brand new (of course I am referring to the English version; the Finnish one is already available for a while). I actually bought it during the pre-sale somewhere back in April and when I finally received it not much longer than a week ago, it felt like a memorable moment that one of opening the package and having it for the first time. If you want to go for it you will find it available in amazon as well as in Molla Mills´own website.

¡Ay! ¡Que este mes os lo traemos calentito! Me llena de orgullo y satisfacción escribir una reseña sobre el último libro que Molla Mills ha publicado en inglés. Con ustedes... ¡Crochetterie! Originalmente conocido como Virkkuri 3.

Si ya estaba loca de contenta al empezar colaborando con la sección Marina Opina hablando de Molla Mills, de la cual me declaro culpable de ser muy fan, ahora vuelvo a tener hemorragia de felicidad porque os traemos un libro que acaba de salir (por supuesto me refiero a la versión en inglés; la versión en finlandés ya lleva un tiempo publicada). De hecho lo compré en pre-venta allá por abril y cuando me llegó no hace mucho más de una semana, con esto de la espera, fue como un momento memorable aquel de abrir el paquetito y poderlo tener por primera vez. No está traducido al español todavía pero para aquell@s que le sigan teniendo miedito al inglés, no se me ocurre manera mejor de motivarse que ir a amazon o a la propia web de Molla Mills, comprarlo y ponerse manos a la obra.

If we already saw many different applications for the home, accessories or jewelry in Modern Crochet, you will find so many new ideas in Crochetterie that you will be willing to take a month off to be able to make it all. Terrific rugs, bags, a backpack, clothes... and wait because that's not all, folks: it's also gender-free. That idea of thinking that crochet is only suitable for girls is something we can discuss once you go through her creations. Actually many of the designs she includes are truly masculine, not only because of the design itself but also because of the neutral colours that she usually works with.

Si ya en Modern Crochet vimos diversas aplicaciones tanto para la casa como para accesorios o joyería, en Crochetterie vais a encontrar tantas ideas nuevas que os querréis pedir un mes de vacaciones para poder darle a todo. Unas alfombras tremendas, bolsos, una mochila, prendas de vestir... y esperad que no acaba ahí la cosa, amig@s: abierto en cuanto a género. Eso de que el crochet es cosa de chicas lo vamos a discutir cuando veáis sus creaciones. De hecho, muchos de los diseños que se incluyen son verdaderamente masculinos, no sólo por dichos diseños en sí, sino como por los colores neutros que utiliza como es habitual en ella.

We find again a consistent book divided by sections that still includes basic instructions for those who want to go through them together with projects that I can ensure you've not seen before. I must confess that I felt instantly touched with one of her projects, what is comprehensible if you bear in mind the lovely bond that I have with Finland as I've already mentioned uncountable times, because it is a banner of the band Korpiklaani, that I find really funny. A woman that makes a crochet book including a tribute to a folk metal band, that gives it a very masculine touch and that shows her handsome father carrying an axe with grace as the model for a jumper can only make me admire her.
If this was not enough, you will find a Maintenance section at the end including stretching exercises performed by her brother, who is a yoga instructor, to end up any crochet session on the proper way.

De nuevo nos encontramos un libro consistente dividido en secciones e incluyendo instrucciones básicas para aquellos que las necesiten junto con proyectos que os puedo asegurar, no habéis visto antes en ningún sitio. He de confesar que uno de sus proyectos tocó mi corazoncito instantáneamente, lo cual es comprensible teniendo en cuenta mi amor infinito/vínculo con Finlandia como ya he mencionado tantas veces que o paro o seré cansina, al tratarse de un estandarte de la banda finlandesa Korpiklaani, que no me puede hacer más gracia. Una mujer que hace un libro de crochet incluyendo un tributo a una banda de folk metal, que le da un toque muy masculino y que saca como modelo para la foto de un jersey a su padre estupendo con su hacha en mano no puede hacer más que provocarme que le haga la ola.

Si esto no fuera poco, al final encontraréis una sección de mantenimiento con estiramientos y ejercicios varios escenificados por su hermano, que es profesor de yoga, para acabar cada sesión de manualidades como se merece.

MY PROJECT

To close this Finnish circle that strongly motivates me and to link it with the familiar side of Molla´s book, the project I've chosen is the carry cushion that my beloved father will be happy to use in those moments when his back gives him a hard time. Of course he will be very stylish while doing it, what makes me understand that he will be glad to take it out as often as possible. I could not choose any other colour than sinivalkoinen which is the name given to the combination of blue and white as seen in the Finnish flag :)

Para cerrar el círculo finlandés que tanto me motiva y enlazarlo con el hecho de lo familiar del libro de Molla, mi proyecto ha sido el cojín “portátil” en el que mi querido padre tendrá el honor de reposar cuando esos achaques que da la espalda le vengan a visitar. Eso sí, lo hará muy estiloso, con lo cual entiendo que estará tan contento de sacar a pasear su cojincito tanto como pueda. No pude sino elegir como color el sinivalkoinen, que es como se conoce a la combinación de azul y blanco, como ocurre en la bandera de Finlandia :)

I am looking forward to read your comments which I expect to be very positive and I leave you this time with a question which answer will be considered depending on what comes by popular demand: let's say Molla´s second book called Virkkuri 2 is only available in Finnish. Let´s say I have it here by my side. Would you like to read a review about it even though?

Espero vuestros comentarios que me atrevo a decir serán muy positivos y os dejo esta vez con una pregunta cuya respuesta será considerada dependiendo de lo que salga por petición popular: digamos que el segundo libro de Molla llamado Virkkuri 2 sólo existe en finlandés. Marina Opina: SWEET CROCHET by Sandrine Deveze

"Sweet Crochet" by Sandrine Deveze, or a book where you will find many pretty things such as… yes! The renowned Pirum Parum!. Who has not seen it before in a poster, illustration or its amigurumi version? I had to seize the opportunity of mentioning the result of my findings about the origin of our favourite little pear. It turns out that it’s an illustration made by the Swedish illustrator Elisabeth Dunker for Fine Little Day, who Sandrine asked for permission before creating her crochet representation. Pirum Parum comes from a Swedish nursery rhyme. If you cannot hold your happy feet when you listen to The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round, just imagine a similar effect on a Swedish version.

"Sweet Crochet" de Sandrine Deveze, o un libro donde encontrar muchas cosas bonitas, entre ellas… ¡sí!, ¡La famosa Pirum Parum!. ¿Quién no la ha visto alguna vez en un póster, una ilustración o su versión amigurumi? No podia dejar pasar la oportunidad de mencionar el resultado de mis pesquisas sobre la procedencia de ésta, nuestra perita preferida.  Resulta que es una ilustración de la sueca Elisabeth Dunker para Fine Little Day a la cual Sandrine pidió permiso antes de proceder con su representación en forma de amigurumi. Pirum Parum viene de una canción infantil sueca. Vamos, que si a ti se te van los pies cuando oyes El patio de mi casa, es particular… te puedes imaginar un efecto similar en la versión sueca.

In her 1st book, suitable for beginners as well as more experienced crocheters, Sandrine shares her love for crochet showing her own style. As many of us did, she learnt how to crochet going through plenty of videos and blogs. I am sure that you will identify yourself with her humbleness.

You will also find a detailed section with materials and techniques together with twelve step-by-step patterns to make lovely animals, a happy village or sushi!

Her creations are accessible and the colours she uses are just sweet.

En este su primer libro, válido tanto para principiantes como para tejedor@s más experimentados, Sandrine comparte su amor por el crochet mostrando su estilo propio. Como muchas de nosotr@s, aprendió a base de tragarse horas de videos y leyendo blogs. Estoy segura de que te vas a sentir identificada con su humildad.

Encontrarás una cuidadosa sección de materiales y técnicas y doce patrones que te guiarán por el paso a paso con los que podrás hacer animalitos adorables, una aldea feliz o sushi! Sus creaciones son accesibles, y los colores que utiliza son simplemente dulces.

Something I really like from her is the flexibility/versatility she adds to some of her patterns including suggestions that will make you see how just making some little changes, it can become something different.

She’s got an eye for detail and adds some embroidery or metallic thread giving her touch to her pieces.

Unfortunately I think I still cannot afford going for her second book, "Tendre Crochet: tome 2", as only the French version is currently available, but I hope it will be translated soon considering the success that this first version is having.

Algo que me gusta de ella es la flexibilidad/versatilidad que le añade a algunos de sus patrones incluyendo sugerencias para que veas cómo cambiándolos un poquito, se pueden convertir en algo diferente.

También es muy cuidadosa a la hora de añadir muchos detalles bordados o incluir hilos metálicos para darles su toque.

Desafortunadamente creo aún no me puedo permitir ir a por la segunda entrega, "Tendre Crochet: tome 2" porque la edición solo está disponible en francés por el momento, pero espero que pronto la traduzcan, visto el éxito que ha tenido la primera.

Marina Opina: GEEK CHIC CROCHET by Nicki Trench

July brings you a book that you may have not seen until now. I am talking about Geek Chic Crochet from Nicki Trench.

Nicki Trench seems to be a restless person as she has not only published many books about crochet, knit, gardening or quilting but is also the founder of Laughing Hens, a UK´s online store.

How wouldn´t we give a chance to such a multifaceted person, right? I suggest that you visit her website to follow her.

Julio os trae un libro que quizás no hayáis visto hasta ahora. Se trata de Geek Chic Crochet, de Nicki Trench.

Nicki Trench parece ser un buen culo inquieto ya que no sólo tiene publicados un montón de libros de crochet, punto, costura, jardinería o patchwork, sino que también es la fundadora de Laughing Hens, tienda online de lanas en el Reino Unido.

Cómo no le íbamos a dar una oportunidad a alguien tan polifacético, ¿verdad? Os aconsejo que visitéis su website para poder seguirle la pista.

Geek Chic Crochet includes 35 patterns that will bring you back to the 60s and 70s. Yes, things you can wear! It is nice to look back at the retro style from once in a while.

The patterns are easy to follow and indicate the skill level. From beanies, headbands, collars or jumpers to scarfs, ponchos or tops. All the seasons are covered.

Even if you are a beginner you will manage wonderfully because there is also a guide of techniques and stitches that is honestly quite easy to follow.

I must make the dress in the cover but considering that I live in The Netherlands, which is not a synonym of lots of sunny days, I am going to wait for the lack of hours of light to happily stay at home and make it when I won´t feel like going out anytime I see a sunbeam.

*my excuses to Holland, which I love with my whole heart and without complains. Just saying that when the sun goes out it´s something to fully enjoy.

Yo tengo que hacer ese vestido de la portada, pero considerando que vivir en Holanda, que no es sinónimo de muchos días de sol, me voy a esperar a que vuelvan las pocas horas de luz para enclaustrarme felizmente en casa y hacerlo cuando se me pasen las ganas de salir con cada rayo de sol que veo.

*mis perdones para Holanda que la sigo queriendo con toda mi alma y no tengo queja, pero cierto es que cuando sale el sol se disfruta como agua de mayo.

MY PROJECT

Considering the above, I saw a cute and easy tie and the time that it required was in inverse proportion to my will of staying out, so it chose itself as a project. As a side note, it is great to have a good-looking brother who looks fine with everything... he will be my “victim”.

Considerando lo anterior, vi una corbata simple y mona y cuyo requerimiento de tiempo era inversamente proporcional a mis ganas de andar por ahí y se eligió sola como proyecto. A parte de eso, es genial tener un hermano estupendo al que le queda todo bien... el será mi víctima.

Marina Opina: EL MUNDO DE PICA PAU by Yan Schenkel

El mundo de Pica Pau. This month I am not really sure if we are having a review or if we just go straight to the tribute, but of course, I had a dilemma: who doesn't already have Pica Pau´s book? Probably, almost no one. 

Despite of that, what kind of collection would not include her? Obviously, none. With these premises, the only thing I could do was, finally, dedicating some lines to this wonderful book.

El mundo de Pica Pau. Este mes no tengo muy claro si va de reseña o directamente de homenaje, pero claro, una se ve ante la siguiente disyuntiva:¿quién no tiene ya el libro de Pica Pau? Probablemente, casi nadie. A pesar de eso, ¿qué tipo de colección de libros no incluiría a esta mujer? Obviamente, ninguna. Con estas premisas lo único que pude hacer fue, por fin, dedicarle unas líneas a este libro tan genial.

I still remember my evenings/nights checking Pinterest and seeing her creations. How many times did I think to myself, “please, sell your patterns” and tadaaa, when the book was finally published, I run to buy it. In fact I made it more thrilling ordering directly from monoblock without knowing that later on, it would be available in Spain. I confess I was a bit of a loser then but it doesn't matter, I couldn't hold it and the waiting gave me this plot that was crucial to keep me anxious.

Yanina Schenkel, creative and original woman, made her own world making those patterns that are so like her. I will not reveal more about her story because she already does it in her prologue, be my guest to read it. Short time ago I saw a post from her in facebook where she vented her sorrows for all that people who copies and uses her work claiming it as their own, selling creations that do not belong to them not even mentioning the author.

Todavía recuerdo mis tardes/noches navegando por Pinterest y viendo sus creaciones. Cuántas veces habré pensado, “por favor, que venda sus patrones ya” y tadaaa, finalmente cuando se publicó, me faltó tiempo para comprarlo. De hecho le puse emoción a la cosa pidiéndolo directamente a monoblock sin saber que poco después estaría de venta en España. Ahí fui un poco loser pero no pasa nada, no pude aguantar y la espera me proporcionó esa intriga crucial que me mantuvo ansiosa.

Yanina Schenkel, mujer creativa y original, creó su propio mundo haciendo patrones que son tan de ella. Más historia no cuento, que ya lo cuenta ella en el prólogo de su libro y así os lo leéis. Hace poco vi un post en su página de facebook donde se desahogaba por tanta gente que le copia y que utiliza su trabajo atribuyéndoselo como propio, vendiendo creaciones que no le pertenecen sin siquiera nombrar a la autora.

Usually one is told that if somebody imitates you, it is because you are good, but I think she already knew it and it was not necessary to “steal” her work to emphasize it.

Now, let´s go straight to the point: the book, perfectly complete. Starting for that dark wooden cover that is so Pica Pau, you will not miss anything. From tools and explanations of any possible stitch to her patterns, organized by difficulty, el mundo de Pica Pau has that thing of being done with love, dedication, care and excitement. Each and every character is not only a pattern, but a “crocheted individual” with its own name and story.

Suele ser típico que te digan que si te imitan, es porque eres buen@, pero creo que eso ella ya lo sabía y no era necesario apropiarse de su trabajo para recalcarlo.

Vayamos al pan, pues: el libro, completísimo. Empezando por esa portada de color madera oscuro que es tan Pica Pau, no se echa de menos absolutamente nada. Desde las herramientas y explicaciones de todos los puntos posibles hasta sus patrones organizados por orden de dificultad, el mundo de Pica Pau tiene eso de haberse hecho con cariño, dedicación, esmero e ilusión. Cada personaje no es simplemente un patrón, sino que es un “individuo ganchilleado” con su nombre propio y su historia.

MY PROJECT

Although I doubt that not even one of those who are reading me now did not say “awww” when he/she first saw any of her little earthly animals, I fell in love with Priscilla Margot Godzilla which, oddly enough, I had not seen before until I purchased the book.

Through her concise and clear instructions and the pictures in every page, that make you feel as if you were visiting her at home and you had always known her, me and my dear netflix made our first Pica Pau. After Priscila I made many more, of course, but it is imposible not to finish one without looking forward to start with the next.

Si bien dudo que no haya una persona que me esté leyendo que no haya dicho “awww” cuando vio por primera vez cualquiera de sus animalitos terrenales, yo me enamoré de Priscilla Margot Godzilla, que curiosamente, no había visto antes hasta que compré el libro.

A través de sus instrucciones modelo CCC (corto, conciso y claro) y de las fotos que acompañan cada página, que te hacen sentir de visita en su casa como si la conocieses de toda la vida, yo y mi querido netflix nos hicimos nuestro primer Pica Pau. Después de Priscila, por supuesto, cayeron muchísimos más, y es que claro, es imposible no terminar uno sin querer ir a por el siguiente.

Marina Opina: IL MANUALE DELL'UNCINETTO by Gaia Segattini

Let´s begin saying that I do not speak a word of Italian beyond the typical basic knowledge that any Spaniard has...

The reason why I chose buying "Il manuale dell'uncinetto" is on one hand, because I was curious to see what was inside the book and in the other hand, because I saw this lady, so colorful and "funky". 

I did no further research about this book before but I just ordered it, let's see what would come. This, of course, helped by a dear Italian friend who took care of the logistics. 

Partamos de la base de que no hablo ni un poquito de italiano más allá de los clásicos básicos que todo español tiene en su haber.

La razón de que eligiese comprar "Il manuale dell'uncinetto" se debe en parte a la curiosidad de ver qué había dentro y al hecho de que vi a esta muchacha muy colorida y “loca”, en el sentido divertido de la palabra. Tampoco hice mucha investigación previa sobre el mismo, simplemente lo pedí, a ver qué llegaba. Esto por supuesto con la ayuda de una amiga italiana que se encargó de la logística.

My goal, to make some of her project(s) without cheating using google translate, it could not be so difficult. I am not being precise at the time of using singular or plural because once I got the book I knew it would not be the one and only project I would be doing.

How did I found her is something that I could not even recall, but let's say it's one of those priceless discoveries you can find spending a while in google.

Mi meta, hacer alguno(s) de su(s) proyecto(s) sin hacer trampa con google translate, tan difícil no podía ser. Dejo la elección de singular o plural abierta ya que una vez conseguí tenerlo, no será el último proyecto que haga.

Cómo encontré a esta mujer es algo que ni siquiera podría concretar, pero vaya, las maravillas que te puede traer echar el ratillo en google es algo que no tiene precio.

Once I received the book it all worked really fast: opening, checking, liking. Happy. Its structure, presentation and the mix between book and illustrated stories, funny typography and many colors are those kind of things that attract people like me as a magpie is attracted to shiny things. 

Una vez recibido el libro fue rápida la cosa: abrir, hojear, gustar. Feliz. La estructura, la presentación y la mezcla que tiene entre libro y cuento con ilustraciones, tipografías divertidas y muchos colores son cosas que a la gente como a mí nos llama la atención cual urraca que ve algo brillante.

MY PROJECT

Projects are divided in three sections: accessories, home decor and toy & pet. Complete and appealing, I know.

After taking a couple of looks, I decided to give a try to the "tappetino del buongiorno" (please note here my first steps in the use of the Italian language as if I knew something), a cute, easy and interesting labor. I thought it was a good project because it is a good example to define this book: something does not have to be complicated to be nice as long as there's creativity involved.

Los proyectos están divididos en tres secciones: accesorios, cosas para la casa y muñecos y mascotas. Completo y llamativo, lo sé.

Después de hojearlo unas cuantas veces, me decidí por probar con el “tappetino del buongiorno” (hete ahí mis primeros pasos en el uso del italiano como si tal cosa), una labor mona y sencilla, pero no por ello menos interesante.

Me gustó como proyecto porque me parece muy buen ejemplo definitorio del libro: algo no tiene porqué ser difícil para quedar bien mientras se use la creatividad.

If I were you I would give a chance to Gaia. Myself (and María, I know for sure) are really pleased!

Si yo fuera vosotras le daría una oportunidad a Gaia. A mí (y a María, que lo sé) nos ha encantado!

Marina Opina: ZOOMIGURUMI 5, various designers

This month we have decided to go for “Zoomigurumi 5” because it is hot off the press and we just could not wait to have it. 

It may be something interesting for those who like to be up-to-date always looking to have all the existing books in your collection.

For those who still don't know about this series of books, the different editions of “Zoomigurumi” gather patterns of several artists from different parts of the world in one book.

We are probably more used to these books because we live in The Netherlands and the author, Joke Vermeiren, is a Belgian graphic designer who loves to crochet. She started gathering patterns a while ago and she is now on her fifth book.

Este mes hemos nos hemos decidido por “Zoomigurumi 5” porque está recién salido del horno y no podíamos esperar a tenerlo. Puede que sea algo interesante para aquellas que estáis al día en publicaciones y queréis que no os falte ni un libro en vuestra colección.

Para las que todavía no conozcan esta serie de libros, las diferentes ediciones de “Zoomigurumi” recogen patrones de varios artistas de diferentes partes del mundo reunidos en un sólo libro.

Es probable que por vivir en Holanda estemos más familiarizadas con estos libros ya que la autora, Joke Vermeiren, es una diseñadora gráfica belga a la que le encanta hacer crochet. Empezó a reunir patrones hace un tiempo y ya va por la quinta entrega del libro.

In any case no worries, because as usual, you can purchase this and the rest of the books of the collection online. They are normally available in Dutch and English, some of them even also in French.
“Zoomigurumi 5” contains 15 different patterns. As a book it is pretty straight forward as it starts with a couple of pages explaining the basic stitches to go straight to the collection of patterns, all of them clearly explained.

En cualquier caso no os preocupéis porque como todo, podéis conseguir este y el resto de libros de la colección por internet. Normalmente los suelen editar en holandés y en inglés, algunos están en francés.

“Zoomigurumi 5” contiene 15 patrones diferentes. Como libro va muy directo al grano, ya que comienza con unas cuantas páginas explicando los puntos básicos para pasar directamente a la colección de patrones, todos claramente explicados.

The main idea here would be for you to increase your patterns collection including different styles because of having patterns created by different artists, always with amigurumi animals as the common thread.

If you are also interested in checking the rest of the previous books of this collection, you will have to visitwww.amigurumipatterns.net, where you will also find lots of different patterns, some of them for free (the least) and most of them available at a normal price.

In fact, in this website you will be able to find patterns of the most known artists and of course, all the patterns created by De Estraperlo.

La gracia quizás esté en ampliar vuestra colección de patrones incluyendo diferentes estilos por aquello de que pertenezcan a diferentes artistas, y el tema común son siempre los amigurumi de animales.

MY PROJECT

Which project to choose? Call me tradicional or predictable but I could not resist to make Pica Pau´s Peacock. I was looking forward to make it a couple of years ago, when it was looking at me from Pinterest and I was expecting to be able to find the pattern some day.

I even think that the fact of having Pica Pau collaborating in this edition and being the cover will positively influence its sales.

¿Qué proyecto hacer? Llamadme típica o predecible, pero no me pude resistir a hacer el pavo real de Pica Pau. Le tenía ganas ya de hace un par de años cuando me miraba desde Pinterest y esperaba que algún día sacase el patrón. Incluso pienso que el hecho de que Pica Pau haya colaborado en esta edición y sea portada influirá mucho en las ventas del libro.

So, now you know: if you want a book with many different patterns, put a Zoomigurumi in your library!

Ya sabéis: si queréis un libro que tenga un poco de todo, poned un Zoomigurumi en vuestra biblioteca!

Marina Opina: LA HORA DEL TÉ, Misako Mimoko

Why are we going for embroidery this month? You will understand why once you have “La hora del té” in your hands. 

Upon receiving it, you will open it and you will see that Eva Monleón wrote a personalized message for you and you will not be able to avoid saying things like: “awww, she's so cute” and so on... yes, it will catch your attention from the very beginning and you know it.

¿Por qué nos hemos pasado al bordado este mes? te diré que lo entenderás en cuanto tengas “La hora del té” en tus manos. Nada más recibirlo, lo abrirás y verás que Eva Monleón te lo ha dedicado y no podrás evitar verte diciendo cosas del tipo: “ay, qué mona por favor” y demás... sí, te llamará la atención desde la primera página y lo sabes.

Either you like embroidery or not, what I don't think I've ever wondered until I had this book, you will be willing to give it a try. You may even feel empowered to make all those wonderful projects in this book, embroidering non stop.

“La hora del té” is full of details, pictures, drawings, explanatory and entertaining text... 14 projects were you will see that she loves what she does and that she´s got that something that she knows she will transmit you, not only for the effort she put into creating this book but also for her style and her managing of design.

Eva is not only original, unique and talented, but she also has a lot of imagination. As the common thread, the tea, something she loves and that is a perfect companion if you are planning to go into this new adventure.

Seas o no un/una fan del bordado, cosa que no recuerdo haberme planteado hasta tener este libro, querrás probarlo. Incluso te vendrás arriba y te imaginarás haciendo todos esos proyectos preciosísimos que vas a encontrar en el libro, bordando como si no hubiera un mañana.

“La hora del té” es un libro lleno de detalles, fotos, dibujos, texto explicativo y divertido a la vez...14 proyectos en los que se nota que le encanta lo que hace y que tiene ese algo que sabe que te va a transmitir no sólo por el esfuerzo que ha puesto en crearlo sino también por su estilo y su manejo del diseño.

Eva no es sólo alguien original, única y con talento, sino que derrocha imaginación. Como temática común, el té, algo que le encanta y que además es una perfecta compañía si vas a echarle horas a esta nueva aventura.

“La hora del té” begins with the introduction to all you need to know and have to start embroidering, how to transfer your designs to fabric and how to wash them to make them last long.

The explanations are easy to follow and you will find enough information to avoid having doubts. The projects are different not only regarding its design but also because she uses diverse materials and you will learn so much that you will feel like you want to go further.

“La hora del té” comienza con una introducción a todo lo que necesitas saber y tener para iniciarte en el mundo del bordado, cómo transferir tus diseños en tela y cómo lavarlos y cuidarlos para que te duren mucho tiempo.

Las explicaciones son sencillas y fáciles de seguir y encontrarás información suficiente como para que no te quepan dudas. Los proyectos son diferentes no sólo en cuanto al diseño sino que borda sobre diversos materiales y vas a aprender tanto que te va a picar la curiosidad.

MY PROJECT

I had not embroidered before and here I was, making Doli Teterita and loving it. I have to confess that I did not know where to start as I liked many projects, but considering that the book is delivered including a taboret, yarns, needles and the fabric you need with the sketch to start working on Doli, I couldn't resist the temptation (thanks a lot Eva for taking care of every detail and for guiding people like me making us start from the beginning).

Yo no había bordado antes y aquí me vi, haciendo a Doli Teterita y gozándolo. He de confesar que no sabía por dónde empezar porque me gustaban varios proyectos, pero teniendo en cuenta que el libro te llega con un bastidor, hilos, agujas y la tela con el dibujo para comenzar por Doli, fue imposible evitar la tentación (gracias Eva por cuidar hasta el último detalle y por encauzar las ansias de gente como yo poniendo un poco de orden y haciéndonos empezar por el principio).

While I am having a cup of tea, I confirm that I have loved making this project and not only that; I swear I will make more and will end up these first steps in the embroidery world making the tea pot that illustrates the cover of the book.

Mientras me tomo un té, confirmo que me ha encantado este proyecto y no sólo eso; juro y perjuro que haré más y culminaré mis pinitos en el mundo del bordado haciendo la tetera de la portada.
