Mongoreto entrevista a... Pica Pau

I am Yan, the person behind Pica Pau.
As a child I wanted to be a draughtswoman, a explorer,
an archaeologist, a zoologist and a vet.
As a grown up I crochet animals…
that's the closest I got to put it all that together.

Tell us about the moment when Yanina thought about making her first Pica Pau.
I do not remember the exact moment when I thought about making the first “Pica Pau” strictly speaking but I do remember my first attempt to crochet; I made the head of a little bear to put on a scarf I made for my eldest son, 11 years ago already.
At that time I thought it was beautiful… needless to say, I think it’s an awful deformity now but it is one of those deformities that you learn to appreciate with nostalgia.
Afterwards, when I discovered something called “amigurumi” (which is still a term that makes my ears bleed because of its terrible historical interpretation - the word is originally Japanese but neither the toys nor the technique are). I started with the classics (owl, squab, squid, cactus) to improve my skills and technique.
Later on I got bored, very bored, and I had the urge of starting to create my own designs.
After many attempts I made the first one which, if I remember correctly, was Jacques Mono.

What came first, illustration or crochet? Is one inspired by the other?
Drawing was always first.
I don’t like crochet in itself. Before anyone has a breakdown, I mean that those old pieces crocheted with super thin thread that our grannies used to carefully unfold anytime someone came home to have lunch, are delightful to see.
And many blankets, some utensils (such as containers) are really beautiful. But in general, I think that crochet stitches are quite crude to be used for clothing. That’s why, until i found out about the toys, I had never been a big fan of this technique.
In fact, it is an excuse to be able to “finish” my characters.
I love drawing and that’s what I’m really passionate about but because of how life goes and many other fears, I never dared to go for it.
Crochet allowed me to do so. Hooks and yarn became my pencil and paint.

About your book “El Mundo de Pica Pau”, tell me something good and something bad that you took from that experience.
Pfff. Plenty of good and bad things? Haha
The good ones: the experience and the learning. I am a fanatic of all kind of books and being able to get into that world was and still is, even if it’s about something I never thought that would be part of my life (crocheting animals), one of the most incredible experiences in my life. Needless to say, I am also adding the public’s welcome.
I specifically made this book to organize all the work I’ve made throughout the years. To be able to close this first cycle with some kind of family photo album that I could share with everyone who’s been with me since I wrote my first entry in my blog.
The bad ones: what you don’t see when you buy a book. All the industry behind that sometimes can be so evil, specially when you are naive enough not to distinguish friendship from business. Unfortunately I learned that the hard way.
In any case and in the long run, you always get experience and learning from it.

You work at home being a mother of two and a cat. How is that experience?
Very, very tiring, but it’s the only one I know and I choose it every single day.
I am not a very social person and I struggle to be myself if I am surrounded by people that I don’t feel familiar with (not even with my family I am in my element).
I worked for several years as a teacher in schools and even if I love teaching, I hated the routine: commuting, dressing up “appropriately”, dealing with absurd problems (those made up by adults out of boredom).
That does not mean that I am not a team player. I do enjoy it and in most cases, it’s stimulating… but not on a daily basis, haha.
I feel better in my world, at my place, at my pace, even if I have to go looking after my kids or feed the cat every 5 minutes.
(clarification: I am delivering this interview with a big delay and it’s been already two hours since i sat down and started writing. Guess why, haha)

We often save some projects for “when I have the time”; is there anything you want to do just to indulge yourself?
I have a huge pile of pieces of fabric that I’ve been saving for years to do something with them. I still don’t know what, but there they are. I think of pillows, cases, needle cases, bags, etc. I did nothing yet though. Not only because I have no time but because I’d like to learn how to sew properly (I know how to sew already but not as good as I’d like).
I also have bags full of yarn to make pullovers and blankets that I never made (for me and my whole family) together with taborets, thread and embroidery needles; this year, I want to learn how to embroider, taking advantage of the fact that it's trendy and there’s so many material to be found easily.
Besides that and beyond crafting, I’d like to spend more time writing my blog, organizing it, writing every week… I miss that a lot.

Pica Pau entrevista a... Lots of Loops

Lots of loops is an endeavor based around thread that explores different projects from amigurumi to embroidery workshops; all of it experimental and for pleasure and much to my own regret, it is sporadic.

I have been disconnected from the online crochet world for a bit, so I was very excited to participate in ‘Crochatting’. It makes me get a move on, take the opportunity to share with you something new and finish a collection I was working on.

I was very interested (and love) the amount of crafts and manual activities there are for children. Have you always been interested in children's point of view or did this come about once you had your daughter?
I have always been interested in children’s point of view: their freshness, their lack of prejudices and fear when they create. It’s something that gets lost when we get older and it’s difficult to recover.

From that same place… do you still make dolls from children’s drawings? I am amazed but, as you said, they are the most demanding crowd, especially when trying to comprehend what they wanted to express with their drawing (which, as adults, we do not always see) How do you manage to balance it? Is it the same as when you work with adults when working on commissions?
Children are very demanding, but at the same time they only ask for accuracy towards the original drawing. With adults it’s more complicated because we find it harder to represent exactly what is in our imagination, so the same image can be interpreted in many different ways. That is why it is important to involve the person in the creation process y make it clear that I will also interpret it in my own style.

In the project Barribastall you work with children and adults. What is the difference, apart from the obvious, between the activities for them both? What are you looking for in each case?
Turns out we can teach the same techniques to children and adults. It is a matter of patience, with children we sew by machine and by hand, we knit, we saw… naturally. It’s to the adults that sometimes, for lack of time or fear, we don’t offer these possibilities. It doesn’t matter if they commit mistakes, get a nip or a cut. I teach design uni students and you can tell which ones tried when they were younger and which ones did not. I miss Barribastall very much, I don’t have that space any longer and it was a fantastic encountering point for creation with adults and children, all mixed up, each doing their own thing.

It seems interesting what crochet can awake in a person (from what I could understand from PechaKucha, with my limited catalan haha). That ‘love it or hate it’ feeling that most of the time is related to the amount of kitsch things that are being and have been knitted. And somehow, I feel that with part of your work, the part not necessarily directed to the younger audience, you will look to play with that boundary. For example with Domestic Hunting Trophies Collection (which are amazing, by the way!) or with the hybrid animals (idea that I might steal from you). What were the reactions to that project? Have you thought about writing about it? (Sorry if you have already and I haven’t found it)
As I explain in Pechakucha, I am very proud of Domestic Hunting Trophies, two of the pieces were bought by Regions Museet from Sweden for their background. They are very polarizing pieces, or people like them a lot or nothing at all. Curiously I have sold more pieces to men than women, I like that, it’s the best reaction to my work. About writing, I don’t think I can get so much out of it! And before stealing them, you can buy the patterns at my Etsy store.

¿Has pensado escribir algo al respecto? (perdón si lo has hecho y no lo he encontrado)

Being an industrial designer, what elements do you think your career has contributed to your current activity? How do you integrate a profession that usually targets mass design (or at least that is how it’s viewed) with handmade and ‘one of a kind’ design?
I believe it is perfectly compatible. Within the design world there is a great interest and respect for all traditional techniques. Every day there is more design reinterpreting the traditional techniques and involving new technologies to create products that are made industrially. A very common example is fabric applied to sports shoes.

Marina Opina: EL MUNDO DE PICA PAU by Yan Schenkel

El mundo de Pica Pau. This month I am not really sure if we are having a review or if we just go straight to the tribute, but of course, I had a dilemma: who doesn't already have Pica Pau´s book? Probably, almost no one.

Despite of that, what kind of collection would not include her? Obviously, none. With these premises, the only thing I could do was, finally, dedicating some lines to this wonderful book.

I still remember my evenings/nights checking Pinterest and seeing her creations. How many times did I think to myself, “please, sell your patterns” and tadaaa, when the book was finally published, I run to buy it. In fact I made it more thrilling ordering directly from monoblock without knowing that later on, it would be available in Spain. I confess I was a bit of a loser then but it doesn't matter, I couldn't hold it and the waiting gave me this plot that was crucial to keep me anxious.

Yanina Schenkel, creative and original woman, made her own world making those patterns that are so like her. I will not reveal more about her story because she already does it in her prologue, be my guest to read it. Short time ago I saw a post from her in facebook where she vented her sorrows for all that people who copies and uses her work claiming it as their own, selling creations that do not belong to them not even mentioning the author.

Usually one is told that if somebody imitates you, it is because you are good, but I think she already knew it and it was not necessary to “steal” her work to emphasize it.

Now, let´s go straight to the point: the book, perfectly complete. Starting for that dark wooden cover that is so Pica Pau, you will not miss anything. From tools and explanations of any possible stitch to her patterns, organized by difficulty, el mundo de Pica Pau has that thing of being done with love, dedication, care and excitement. Each and every character is not only a pattern, but a “crocheted individual” with its own name and story.

MY PROJECT

Although I doubt that not even one of those who are reading me now did not say “awww” when he/she first saw any of her little earthly animals, I fell in love with Priscilla Margot Godzilla which, oddly enough, I had not seen before until I purchased the book.

Through her concise and clear instructions and the pictures in every page, that make you feel as if you were visiting her at home and you had always known her, me and my dear netflix made our first Pica Pau. After Priscila I made many more, of course, but it is imposible not to finish one without looking forward to start with the next.

Now you know; if there is still someone here who still has not purchased el mundo de Pica Pau, please, proceed immediately to include this must in your happy library :)

I will see you here from now on with more books, reviews and projects!
