Pop Up Crochet Party de Casa Sol

Situación: Pop Up Store de Casa Sol.

Marina Opina: GANCHITOS by Leire Villar & Ingrid Valls

This month I’m overflowing with joy as Maria and I were waiting anxiously for the moment to wish you a very happy Christmas with... THE BOOK.

What can I tell you that you don’t already know about the digital publication best known as Ganchitos and the divine and talented women that hide behind it? What started as a way of offering accessible, modern and useful patterns FINALLY became the book that we were all waiting for, created by Ingrid (Las Teje y Maneje) and Leire (Ameskeria).

Looking at it not only as a collection of patterns but also as the unique object that is a book in itself, I can only say that it has been made with lots of love, effort and attention to detail. From the presentation to the colour palette used for each pattern and the pictures (some of them counting with Señorita Lylo as a special model).

Twenty four projects organized by difficulty level and ordered according to the seasons, six per season, with step-by-step pictures and huge diagrams/sketches and graphics.  An original choice and unseen until now when presenting creations that look to offer all-year round useful patterns. Do you have it already? Good! You don’t have it yet? That's fine, you are still in time to get one as a late Christmas gift!

Sometimes it’s not easy to talk about a book when it moves you; you want to express everything you saw in it, but you also don’t want to spoil the surprise for all of those that are willing to purchase it, to see it with their own eyes and enjoy it without someone telling them the end of the movie before they watch it.

If you follow Ganchitos on Social Media you can access all the information on how to get your hands on their patterns and on their blog  you can find all the related details.
To purchase the book please go to the Gustavo Gili publishing house website, an amazing publishing house and one of our favourites, as we already mentioned when we wrote about Molla Mills’ first book that they published in Spanish. I can not think of a better way of making this a perfect edition.

MY PROJECT

I must point out how hard it was to select one project out of all these jewels, but considering that it’s time for cold weather and going back to the fact that the book’s patterns are organized by seasons of the year; what better than to make yourself some beautiful mittens that you can use as soon as possible? You will be able to see that in this pattern, in which the jacquard technique is used, the single crochet stitch is done through the back loop only. I decided to make the mittens in two ways: on one side just as it was indicated through the back loop only and the other doing a normal single crochet so you can see the difference. And just as a side note for the super De Estraperlo fans, the medium brown I used for some of the leaves is the same that is used for Conchita’s body.

We are sure we will definitely not be the last ones to recommend this book!

I will see you here from now on with more books, reviews and projects!

Crochatting: Ameskeria entrevista a... Lalala Toys!

When we realized that designing dolls is our favorite thing in life, we decided it would be our livelihood.

From all the styles we have tried until these days, we have to say that people and pets portraits are what we like the most and what satisfies us. The best part is seeing the reactions of people and listening to their stories when they receive their portrait... to know that they feel identified is one of the best feelings ever, and we are lucky that we can feel that every day.
We love thinking that there might be a boy or a girl somewhere (or even an adult) who is making up stories and games where they are the protagonists. Knowing that people can travel all around the world together with their beloved pets (or miniatures of them) and that many of them will have their portraits as special memories of their wedding day.
We also like to create our own stories, to create little theaters, books, design and videos. In brief, that we have tons of fun working and we cannot imagine any other way of living if it´s not being together making dolls and creating stories.

Sources of inspiration. What inspires you?
Colors, cartoons, our dog Cotó, trees, books, food, friends, internet, the city, the actual materials... everything inspires us. The truth is that even what you might not expect can be inspiring for us.

Favorite materials to work with
We use cotton yarn quite often but at the time of customizing amigurumis we cannot be limited to that material only. We use different kinds of yarns and bulks to get different results and textures.
In the other hand, Jorge works basically with winter socks, which is his preferred material.

Do you work with music? What kind of music?
Jorge is our dj; he is always playing spotify. We like all kind of music and we choose it depending on our mood. Any other day we can be listening to Spanish pop from the '80s in the morning and switch to classical music in the afternoon. We love good music and we do not have preferences regarding any specific music style. Jazz, pop, salsa, bossa nova, classical, rock... they are all welcome in our studio.

What project are you most proud of? Why?
Well... the books, because it means diving into the void without knowing what will happen. We learnt a lot from the collection of books we made with the publisher Mediterrània "Els Cacaus d'en Sam" because we always wanted to tell stories with our toys through the use of pictures. However, I think that the books of patterns have been our most exciting project. We have learnt a lot and we have many things to improve, but we would not exchange that experience for anything else. That feeling in your belly when you are about to have a finished project is amazing!

What project is the most exciting for you in the future?
Publishing more; we are excited about a couple of books we have in mind even if I have to say that we always start everything with a strong will. It will be a really busy year, but i'm sure it will be worthwhile ^.^

Crochatting: BruDIY entrevista a... Ameskeria!

I am Leire Villar, Basque born adopted in Barcelona and I started the Ameskeria blog in 2009.

Ameskeria means imagination, chimera. That which is not real, which only exists in your mind and only you can see.

I like it because even if I am aware that it is a difficult name, I think it is strongly related to what creativity means to me. What can only be seen by you, what is only in your mind... until you shape it.
I use Ameskeria to bring my creative curiosities together: mainly crochet and photography but also illustration, communication, character creation, art direction... the beauty of such a broad definition is that there is place for everything.
Besides shaping Ameskeria I am a co-founder of the e-magazine Ganchitos, I teach how to crochet in several locations in Barcelona and I am a member of Guerrilla de Ganxet.

Crochet lovers are really into taking on new challenges, finding new materials, techniques and crochet stitches. What is your latest discovery?
What appeals to me most is the acquisition of useless knowledge. In this regard I am delighted by the electro-textile world. Being able to integrate soft circuits and using small lights in my creations quite fascinates me.

Are you one of those who piles up “to-do projects” in a Pinterest board? Is there any crochet project that you are longing to try?
Ideas go always round and round in my mind but I am more into piling up unfinished projects. I have thousands of those. I could even create a museum of unfinished pieces.
I am longing to give a try to the clothing world. Jackets, jumpers, skirts or crocheted dresses. That is pending.

What kind of yarn do you use? Any preference?
I like natural fibers. For dolls and accessories I like cotton, specially for those chubby ones that are crocheted with a 5 or 6 mm needle because you will have something great straight away.
For warm clothes my preference goes to alpaca wool.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words... could you share with us some tips or tricks to take good pictures even if we don't have any professional material?
I am a very minimal person when it comes to photography. I think that you can get better results by using less items which have been carefully chosen rather than using many, even if they are all beautiful separately. Combining less items is easier.
If you have no light sources it is very important that you make the most of natural light. Taking pictures in the morning and if you don't have a bright house or studio, going outside and playing with public elements: outdoor wooden tables, particularly textured walls, metallic park benches or beautiful tiles. Keeping an eye on locations offered by your surroundings can make things easier.
Sometimes a product stands out by itself if simply placed on a very beautiful background: and old piece of wood, watercolour paper, a rusty sheet of metal...

Do you think that being present in many different social media is essential to make your product known? Which is your favourite?
Presence in social media is important but it does not ensure success. Only a small percentage of all your followers will also become your customers. In this regard, social relationships are more important. Your first contact will generally come from the internet but you'll have to connect with people in a more personal way.
Internet is very, very wide. Unmanageable. It is quite difficult to stand out among all those beautiful things and talented people. It is your personal story what makes the difference.
Regarding my favourite social media I would choose Instagram. I do enjoy the format and I feel comfortable with it.
