I am Estefanía and I’m the author and founder of Santa Pazienzia.
I am very fortunate of being able to make my passion for crochet my work and I am happy that I can dedicate myself in body and soul to something like this.

I am from Cádiz, I live in the mountains and I escape to see the sea whenever I can. I have a weakness for my all-time friends, my family, my partner and of course, my dog.
I have been a teacher so teaching is pure vocation. They say I have a lot of patience, hence the name of my project.

Instagram is my key tool for social networking, not because of its pictures or functionality but because it has given me something I could have never imagined that could happen: making true long-distance friends with wonderful people that came my way because of crochet

Soy Estefanía y soy la autora y fundadora de Santa Pazienzia.
Tengo la gran suerte de haber conseguido hacer de mi pasión por el crochet mi profesión y estoy feliz de poder dedicarme a algo así en cuerpo y alma.
De mí te cuento que soy una gaditana que vive en en las montañas y siempre que puedo me escapo a ver el mar. Tengo debilidad por mis amigas de toda la vida, por mi familia, pareja y por supuesto, por mi perro.
Vengo del magisterio así que lo de enseñar es pura vocación. Me dicen que tengo mucha paciencia y de ahí el nombre de mi proyecto.
Mi red social es por excelencia en Instagram y no por sus fotos o funcionalidad sino porque me ha dado algo que nunca podía haber imaginado que podría pasar, hacer auténticas a amistades en la distancia con gente maravillosa que el crochet ha puesto en mi camino.

I have checked your blog several times and I’ve realized that within your section “I AM”, you barely say a word about your origins! I would like to know where do you come from and also a bit about how were your beginnings with crochet and who was your source of inspiration to go online.
Now that you say, you are right, I’ll have to add some more information about myself to that section. I am from Tarifa (Cádiz) but I live far away from my paradise, somewhere else that is not too bad at all, Andorra.
My history with crochet began only 4 years ago when I had a ski accident and I had to rest for a long time. I was very bored and I started watching videos in internet. On my first afternoon, I had already made a crochet bag and I knew I had found a big passion.
Despite of that, I realized the lack of high quality tutorials and most of all, there were no modern or attractive projects to make (nothing to do with what you can find now) and I decided to show my vision of this technique. My designs together with my interest in computers and my profession as a teacher resulted on a blog that, in a short time, started having thousands of followers all around the world. As I already said, there was no one at that time doing what I started doing what also had an impact on the fact that so many people started following me.
Regarding references, I have a lot now but I could not aim at anyone back then because there was no one in my sector, therefore I became a student of “mamá quiero ser blogger” to learn how to make my little blog into something bigger.

He visitado tu blog en varias oportunidades, y me he dado cuenta que en el apartado "YO SOY", apenas cuentas nada de tus orígenes! Me gustaría saber no sólo un poquito de dónde vienes, sino también cómo fueron tus inicios con el Crochet y quién fue tu fuente de inspiración para lanzarte al mundo online?
Ahora que lo dices, tienes razón, tendré que añadir un poquito más de mí en ese apartado.

Pues soy de Tarifa (Cádiz) pero vivo muy lejos de mi paraíso, en otro lugar que no está nada mal, Andorra.
Mi historia con el crochet comenzó hace sólo 4 años cuando tuve un accidente de esquí y me vi obligada a guardar reposo mucho tiempo. Estaba muy aburrida y me puse a ver vídeos en internet. La primera tarde ya me había hecho un bolso con trapillo y supe que acababa de encontrar una gran pasión.
A pesar de eso me di cuenta de que no había tutoriales de calidad y sobretodo, no había proyectos modernos o atractivos para hacer (nada que ver con ahora) y me decidí a mostrar mi visión de esta técnica. Mis diseños, más mi afición a la informática y mi profesión de maestra dieron como resultado un blog que, en muy poco tiempo, comenzó a tener miles de seguidores por todo el mundo. Como ya te he dicho, por aquel entonces no había nadie que hiciera lo que yo acababa de iniciar así que eso también influyó mucho en que tanta gente comenzara a seguirme.
En cuanto a referente, ahora tengo muchas pero en aquel entonces no podía fijarme en nadie de mi sector porque no lo había así que me hice alumna de “mamá quiero ser blogger” para aprender cómo llevar mi pequeño blog a algo más grande.

You are a rock star when it comes to crocheting with t-shirt yarn and XL crochet besides having a way to teach that everyone understands and learns from. You deserve the success you have with your courses! When you started, did you imagine that you would reach so many people all around the world? How do you feel about it now?
Thanks a lot! Obviously, I would have never imagined that my little blog would become the online teaching platform that it is now.
When one starts writing the first tutorials, one assumes that not even your family will read it but when the first comments from people you don’t know start showing, it is when one realizes that one can make a big impact.
I am very moved anytime someone tells me he/she has learned to crochet thanks to me, that he/she likes my designs or what’s more incredible, when someone writes me saying that thanks to crochet he/she’s overcoming difficult times. It is then when I forget all sorrows, the hard-working times and I realize that crochet is therapy and only because of that it’s worth to do what I do.

Eres una crack del trapillo y del Crochet XL, además tienes una manera de enseñar que todo el mundo entiende y aprende. Tu éxito con tus cursos lo tienes bien merecido! Cuando comenzaste, en los inicios, te imaginaste que llegarías a tantas personas del mundo entero? Cómo lo vives ahora?
Muchas gracias! Pues evidentemente ni en mis mejores sueños me hubiera imaginado que mi pequeño blog se convirtiera en la plataforma de enseñanza online que es ahora.
Cuando empiezas a escribir los primeros tutoriales das por hecho que no lo van a leer ni tus familiares pero en el momento que te llegan los primeros comentarios de gente que no conoces es cuando te das cuenta de la repercusión que puedes llegar a tener. 

"Me emociona muchísimo cada vez que alguien me dice que ha aprendido a tejer gracias a mí, que le gustan mis diseños o lo que es más increíble, cuando me escriben y me dicen que gracias al crochet están superando momentos difíciles en sus vidas. Ahí es cuando se me olvidan todas las penas, las duras horas de trabajo y me doy cuenta de que el crochet es terapia y sólo por eso ya merece la pena hacer lo que hago."

Did you always know that you liked crochet or did you do something else before? And in case you did something else, when did you realize that this was the way to go and that you’d be devoted to Santa Pazienzia?
As I already explained, it’s been a short time since I crochet but it’s true that I’ve always been skillful and very creative. That comes from my mother who is sheer creativity and who’s been a costume jewelry designer for many years. We’ve always customized everything at home, customizing our clothes, sewing, making our own jewelry… It’s also true that crochet has always been there in the background as my granny used to crochet but I had never given it a try. I don’t think I had any interest in this technique until I had the first t-shirt yarn ball. From then on, the rest went smoothly.

Siempre supiste que te gustaba el Crochet, o antes te dedicabas a otra cosa? y en el caso de dedicarte a otra cosa, en qué momento exacto te diste cuenta que tenías que tomar este camino y dedicarte a Santa Pazienzia?
Como he explicado al principio, en el crochet llevo poco tiempo pero sí que es verdad que siempre he sido habilidosa con las manos y bastante creativa. Eso me viene de mi madre que es creatividad pura y durante muchos años ha sido diseñadora de bisutería. En casa siempre hemos estado dándole nuestro toque a todo lo que nos rodeaba tuneando nuestra ropa, cosiendo, montando nuestras joyas…
También es verdad que el crochet siempre ha estado ahí, de fondo, mi abuela materna tejía, pero yo no me había puesto nunca a ello. Creo que mi interés por esta técnica no se me despertó hasta que llegó a mí el primer ovillo de trapillo. A raíz de ahí el resto vino rodado.

There’s no doubt that you are on the right path, your work and energy confirm it! Where and how do you see yourself within the following 5 years?
I don’t really know if it’s the right path but I do know it’s the one I’m building with my every step. If you tell me 5 years ago, when I did not even know how to use a crochet needle, that I would be teaching and giving online courses, I would have not believed it, therefore I am not able to know what I am going to be doing in 5 years. What I do know is that Santa Pazienzia evolves day by day and I am sure I will be involved in something creative.

Sin duda estás en el camino correcto, tu trabajo y la energía que desprendes así lo confirman! Cómo y dónde te ves de aquí a 5 años?
Uff, pues no sé si es el camino correcto pero sí es el que yo voy construyendo con mis pasos. Si me dices hace 5 años, que ni sabía coger una aguja de ganchillo, que iba a dedicarme a dar clases y cursos online de crochet no me lo hubiera creído así que soy incapaz de saber qué estaré haciendo dentro de 5 años. Lo que sí sé es que Santa Pazienzia evoluciona cada día y seguro que en algo creativo seguiré involucrada.

And now a little tip for those who like XL crochet. I confess I’m terribly afraid of t-shirt yarn because it’s a quite rigid material and it terrifies me to think that I will get a tendonitis or something similar as time goes by. Is there any exercise for our hands, arms and back to help us avoiding future physical problems? Because I see that you crochet for a while already and you are just fine! There must be a secret! Hahaha!
Haha, I wouldn’t say so, I had a tendonitis recently that lasted for a month. It is true that t-shirt yarn is a sort of material that demands some physical effort but you must know how to work with it. I recommend not to work for long sessions, to change the handle of the needle and to stretch once you finish.
Anyway, nowadays we are lucky to have materials such as trap yarn, cotton… which are much easier to work with than the classic t-shirt yarn. In the other hand, pilates helps me a lot. I practice several times a week and it saves me, either to train or to relieve any pain we can get from crocheting.
We do suffer from pain in the back, shoulders, cervical vertebrae… and there’s nothing like stretching and strengthening your body. If by any chance I can’t train for several days in a row, I feel discomfort straight away.

Y ahora un consejito para las crocheteras XL. Confieso que le tengo un miedo terrible al trapillo, porque es un material bastante rígido y me aterra pensar que con el tiempo puede llegar a darme una tendinitis o algo por el estilo. Hay algún ejercicio para nuestras manos, brazos y espalda que nos ayude a evitar problemas físicos futuros? Porque veo que hace bastante tiempo que tejes, y estás genial! Tiene que haber algún secreto! jajaja!
Jajaja, no creas, hace muy poco he tenido una tendinitis que me ha durado un mes.
Es cierto que el trapillo es un material que requiere bastante esfuerzo físico pero hay que saber trabajarlo. Yo recomiendo no hacer sesiones largas, ir cambiando la empuñadura de la aguja y hacer estiramientos al acabar.
De todas formas, te diré que hoy en día tenemos la suerte de tener materiales como la tira de hilo, los discos de tela ligera, el cotton… que son mucho más fáciles de trabajar que el trapillo clásico.
Por otra parte, algo que me ayuda muchísimo es el Pilates. Lo practico varias veces por semana y para mí es la salvación tanto para entrenar como para aliviar las dolencias que podemos tener al tejer. Sufrimos mucho de espalda, hombro, cervicales… y no hay nada como ir a estirar y fortalecer el cuerpo. Si por cualquier motivo no puedo entrenar durante varios días enseguida aparecen las molestias.

Hola! Mi nombre es Cecilia, y soy especialista en Crochet.
Mi nuevo proyecto se llama Mamma! Do It Yourself.
Un blog donde comparto mis diseños, tutoriales para tejer más y mejor, mis descubrimientos y recomendaciones en el mundo tejeril (desde diseñadores, publicaciones, tiendas, lanas, etc), y también consejos o tips para Crocheteras Emprendedoras.
A lo largo de los últimos 25 años, me he dedicado en exclusiva a lo Hecho a Mano. He emprendido todo tipo de negocios y proyectos, sola y acompañada, que tienen que ver con el mundo artesanal.
En los últimos tiempos he ampliado mi formación, para poder ofrecerte todo lo aprendido y lo que sigo aprendiendo.
Continúo mejorando mi técnica como tejedora, como diseñadora, como maestra, y por supuesto como emprendedora.
Estoy creando mi mundo bonito, y quiero que también puedas crear el tuyo!

What motivated you to do what you do?
Ooh! The million-dollar question! Actually a lot of things did.
Since I was little, I always liked art in all its forms. I was lucky to be the 5th daughter at the time when there were good times at home; my mum sent me to all kind of out-of-school activities since I was very little, from drawing classes to puppets, music lessons… when I was at home, I was always inventing something. I had a very creative childhood as in those times, we didn’t watch tv, and on a self-educated way thanks to my stubbornness, I learned how to paint on fabric, batik, macramé and of course, crochet.
When I was a teenager, I already crocheted bikinis and tops for my girlfriends.
While travelling, I started selling my crochet works to help with my expenses and to keep on moving across South America; there was always someone who liked what I did, lucky me!
When I have something in mind, I must make it! It’s a magical moment that takes me to the best of me, to what I AM and it is the force that moves me to do everything I do!

Qué te impulsó hacer lo que haces?
Uy uy uy!!! La pregunta del millón! Pues muchas cosas la verdad.
Desde pequeña siempre me gustó el arte en todas sus expresiones. Tuve la suerte de ser la 5º hija, y en mi casa ya era la época de las "vacas gordas" (como dice mi hermana mayor), y mi madre me envió a todo tipo de actividades extraescolares desde muy pequeña, desde dibujo, pasando por títeres, música, y en casa me la pasaba todo el día haciendo inventos de todo tipo. Tuve una infancia repleta de creatividad, ya que en esa época no se veía la tele, y de manera autodidacta y gracias a mi cabezonería aprendí pintura sobre tela, batik, macramé, y por supuesto crochet.
Ya de adolescente, tejía a mis amigas bikinis y tops.
Viajando, comencé a vender mis tejidos para solventar mis gastos y seguir avanzando en mi ruta por Sudamérica, y siempre había alguien que le gustaba lo que hacía, por suerte para mí!
Cuando visualizo algo en mi mente, tengo que hacerlo! Es un momento mágico, que me eleva a lo mejor de mí, a lo que YO SOY. Y es la fuerza que me impulsa para hacer todo lo que hago!

How’s your creative process at the time of crocheting and creating?
I do not have a fixed creative process; I mean… inspiration can come at any time. Sometimes it comes in the middle of the night, reason why I have a little notebook close to my bed in order to draw it or write it down at the moment; otherwise I’d lose the idea. Other times, it comes from an image that caught my attention, not related to crochet, maybe because of its texture or its colors, and then the ideas come to my mind. Also from the books I read, generally women from other times whose history makes me fly away! And sometimes, of course, I am inspired by other crocheters.
I draw some quick drafts and once I have the idea, I start looking for the materials and test it. I like to sit down to do it at once, the world around me disappears and it’s me, my needle and the threads. Most of the time, I finish it in one go; counted are the times when I have to unravel something to crochet it again but if I must, it doesn’t really matter because I know I am going to be very pleased with the result and it will be worth it.
Sometimes, when I know what I want, I write the pattern on the go, meaning that I write down what I am crocheting at the moment. Most of the times and because I have many other things to do, I use every possible moment to keep on making progress with my project and once I finish it, I write the pattern.
Sometimes I take pictures while making something and sometimes I wait until I finish it to write the pattern and once everything’s done, I make it again to take step-by-step pictures or to make a tutorial video.
I am not a person of routines, the process becomes often chaotic but that makes it funnier! Hahaha! What I do need is hours of calm, of not talking to anyone, of not listening to anything but an instrumental background music to be totally focused. It is my moment, and I love it!

Cómo es tu proceso de trabajo creativo a la hora de tejer y de crear?
No tengo un proceso fijo, es decir, la inspiración puede llegar en los momentos más inoportunos. A veces me viene en mitad de la noche, por lo que tengo un cuadernito al lado de la cama para dibujar o apuntar en el momento, porque sino después esa idea se me pierde. Otras veces viene de una imagen que me llamó la atención, que no tiene nada que ver con el tejido, puede ser por su textura o por sus colores, y me vienen ideas a la cabeza. También de los personajes de los libros que leo, generalmente mujeres de otras épocas que con su historia me hacen volar al más allá! Y otras veces por supuesto, me inspiro de otras tejedoras.
Realizo varios dibujos, que los hago en plan borrador rápido, y una vez ya tengo la idea, comienzo a buscar los materiales y a realizar pruebas. Me gusta sentarme y hacerlo de una vez, el mundo a mi alrededor deja de existir, y soy yo con mi aguja y los hilos. Casi siempre me sale del tirón, son pocas las veces que tengo que deshacer para volver a tejer, pero si lo tengo que hacer no me importa, porque sé que el resultado me gustará mucho y vale la pena.
A veces, cuando lo tengo claro, escribo el patrón sobre la marcha, es decir, a medida que voy tejiendo, voy apuntando lo que voy haciendo. Pero la mayoría de las veces, como tengo otro montón de cosas que hacer, aprovecho cualquier momento para seguir avanzando en el proyecto, y ya cuando lo tengo terminado, escribo el patrón.
A veces voy sacando fotos a medida que lo voy haciendo, y otras veces espero a tenerlo terminado y escribir el patrón, y una vez ya tengo todo listo, lo vuelvo a hacer para la sesión de fotos del paso a paso o el vídeo tutorial.
Yo no soy de rutinas, el proceso muchas veces se vuelve caótico, pero así es más divertido!! jajaja!
Lo que sí necesito son horas de calma, de no hablar con nadie, de no escuchar nada más que una música de fondo instrumental en plan concentración total. Es mi momento, y me encanta!

Which was the moment that reaffirmed that you must keep on doing what you do?
There have been many of those moments throughout my life. I’ve been dedicated to craftwork and crochet for more than 25 years so I have plenty of moments to talk about. However, there is one moment that I won’t ever forget.
I was travelling in South America, arriving to Ecuador from Peru, to a surf beach called “Montañita”; at that time it was quite a picturesque village, full of artisans who were selling their creations in the main street. I was coming from colder weather in Bolivia and Peru, I had been travelling for 6 months already and I arrived to this summery place. I had barely any money left to keep on travelling; I had actually run out of money. Then I sat in a corner close to other artisans, I took my crafts out, some things I had made with macramé and a crocheted bikini. Five minutes later, a girl stood up in front of me and without any further enquiry, she bought my bikini and paid an amount that was enough for me to pay for the hostel and the menu for a week. The day after, I crocheted another bikini and I also sold it. And so on, day after day. I stayed in this place much longer than expected! I thought about being there for a week and I ended up staying there for almost 2 years! From there, I was able to travel throughout Ecuador, Colombia and back to Peru a couple of times! Some neighbors used to pass by my stand with their bikes and screamed “granny!” to me, because I spent the whole day crocheting. Women used to send me their daughters so I could teach them how to crochet hoping they’d earn a living out of that! There were so many stories in this village…
Cuál ha sido el momento que reafirmó que debes seguir haciendo lo que haces?
Han sido varios momentos a lo largo de mi vida. Hace más de 25 años que me dedico a las artesanías y al tejido por lo que me sobran momentos para contar.
Pero hay uno que no lo voy a olvidar.
Estaba de viaje por Sudamérica, llegaba a Ecuador desde Perú, a una playa surfista que se llama Montañita, en esa época era un pueblito bastante pintoresco, lleno de artesanos vendiendo en la calle principal. Venía de climas fríos de Bolivia y Perú, ya hacía 6 meses que venía viajando, y llegué a este lugar de verano total. Ya casi no me quedaba dinero para continuar el viaje, estaba sin un duro para ser más exactos. Entonces me senté en un rinconcito al lado de otros artesanos, saqué mis artesanías que eran algunas cosas que había tejido de macramé y un bikini de crochet. Cinco minutos después, una chica se detuvo delante de mí, y sin preguntar nada de nada, me compró el bikini por un monto que me daba para pagar el hostal y el menú diario de una semana. Así que al día siguiente tejí otro bikini, y lo volví a vender. Y así día tras día. Mi visita en este lugar se extendió mucho más tiempo de lo imaginado! Iba en plan una semana, y mantuve este sitio como mi base de operaciones casi 2 años! Desde allí pude viajar por todo Ecuador, también a Colombia, y volví a Perú unas cuantas veces! Los vecinos del pueblo pasaban con sus bicicletas delante de mi puesto y me gritaban "Abuela!!!", porque me la pasaba todo el día tejiendo. Las mujeres me enviaban a sus hijas para que les enseñe a tejer y así poder ganarse la vida! Otra que Macondo! Este pueblo tenía más historias que los libros de Gabriel García Márquez.

Who or what’s your inspiration to create such wonderful works?
My inspirations are those women who’ve been removed from history. Anonymous women that made something for humanity but who no one names or remembers.
Strong women, wise women, some call them “witches”, I call them the Disobedient. The seekers, the questioning, the irreverent, the warriors, the ambitious, those who know they deserve everything and more but who don’t need anyone to tell them because they feel already fulfilled.
I would like to reflect the different cultures I’ve been living with and I will keep on spending time with during my life’s journey.
Cuál o quién es tu inspiración para la creación de tus tejidos maravillosos !!
Mi inspiración son las mujeres borradas de la historia. Mujeres anónimas, que sumaron a la historia de la humanidad, y nadie las nombra ni las recuerda.
Mujeres fuertes, mujeres sabias, algunos les dicen "Brujas", yo les digo las Desobedientes. Las buscadoras, las cuestionadoras, las irreverentes, las guerreras, las ambiciosas, las que saben que se lo merecen todo y mucho más pero que no necesitan reconocimiento externo porque en su interior ya se sienten realizadas.
Me gustaría poder reflejar las diferentes culturas con las cuales estuve conviviendo, y seguiré conviviendo en el viaje de mi vida.

From your work, what do you think that better reflects who you are?
Well, I have not made the most of it yet, I’m working on it. I am not sure if it’s me the one who has to answer this question. Something I like from my work which reflects something of me is that I like to do my best. It doesn’t matter if finishing a pattern takes me longer, even if it seems to be easy. I keep on studying day by day to improve my technique. My goal is that those who decide to buy and make one of my patterns, can make it and can also learn something about it, something to keep forever.
I value everything handmade very much, not only because I make a living out of it but because I’ve shared experiences with families that generation after generation, have passed this knowledge to generations nowadays. Crocheting or knitting is something that cannot be forgotten. It must be adapted to these times without losing the essence.
I am not a consumerist as travelling for a long time without carrying many belongings, made me realize that we don’t really need so many things. The time you spend making something yourself is more valuable than anything else. Time well spent doing something creative that takes the best out of you is much more worthy than the time you can save when you buy something because to buy it you’ll have to work double the time for something that does not represent you and that will be worn by millions of people and that will be ruined in a couple of days or that you won’t like once it’s not in fashion anymore. Throwaway society is not good.
That’s why I think that Mamma! Do It Yourself as a whole is my war cry, something that fully represents me as a woman, a mother and a human being.
To be able to carry out this project, I’ve had to overcome many obstacles and most of all to change my way of thinking about many things that I thought of differently but it turns out there can be other options!
I like to be able to share it with all those who also feel that war cry inside them, to let them know they can also do it and most of all, that they are not alone!
De tu trabajo, que piensas tú qué es lo que más refleja quién eres
Bueno, todavía no lo he explotado al máximo, estoy en éllo. No sé si soy yo la que tiene que responder esta pregunta. Lo que si me gusta de mi trabajo, y que pienso que refleja algo de mí, es que me gusta hacerlo de la mejor manera posible. No me importa tardar más tiempo en terminar un patrón, por más sencillo que parezca. Sigo estudiando día a día para mejorar cada vez más mi técnica. Mi objetivo es que la persona que decida adquirir y tejer algo con alguno de mis patrones, lo pueda hacer y además aprenda algo, se quede con algo que le acompañe para siempre.
Valoro muchísimo lo echo a mano, no sólo porque vivo de ésto, sino porque he compartido vivencias con familias, que generación tras generación, han trasladado ese conocimiento a través del tiempo a las generaciones actuales. El oficio del tejido, ya sea el Crochet o el Tricot, no se puede perder. Hay que adaptarlo a los tiempos que corren, pero sin perder su esencia.
Yo no soy una persona muy consumista de cosas, al estar viajando durante mucho tiempo con pocas pertenencias, me hizo caer en la cuenta que realmente no necesitamos tantas cosas materiales. Que el tiempo que le dedicas a hacerlo tú mismo es más valioso que cualquier otra cosa. El tiempo bien aprovechado haciendo algo creativo y que te eleva a lo mejor de ti, vale mucho más que el que te puedas ahorrar comprando algo en una gran superficie, porque para comprar eso tendrás que trabajar el doble, por una prenda que no te representa ya que millones de personas la llevarán igual que tú, y que se estropeará a los dos días o que a los dos días te deja de gustar porque se pasó de moda. La cultura del usar y tirar no es buena.
Por eso creo que Mamma! Do It Yourself en su conjunto, es mi grito de guerra, un grito de guerra que me representa totalmente, como mujer, como madre y como ser humano.
Es un proyecto que para poder llevarlo a cabo, he tenido que superar muchísimos obstáculos, y sobretodo transformar mi modo de pensar de muchas cosas que hasta el momento pensaba que eran de una manera y que resulta que también pueden ser de otra!
Y me gusta poder compartirlo con todas esas personas que también sientan ese grito en su interior, y que sepan que éllas o éllos también pueden, y sobretodo que no están solos!

With Siempre oveja I aim at showing people two things: first, that sheep wool can be versatile and friendly in another format! Second and most important, I want to show that you can make your dreams come true! I remember when I was 19 and I said: “I dream of making a living out of crocheting” and today, being 27 years old, I am doing it!. Therefore I tell you all, “be authentic and show it to the world; even if frightening, one has to conquer it!”

Con Siempre oveja busco dos cosas la primera mostrarle a la gente que la Lana de oveja puede ser versátil y puede ser amigable en otro formato ! Y segundo y lo más importante es que es posible hacer tu sueño realidad! Recuerdo cuando tenía 19 años decir " mi sueño es vivir del tejido ". y hoy a mis 27 años lo estoy haciendo ! How did you start making crochet dolls?

I started a year and 7 months ago out of necessity as Siempre Oveja started being a shop for scarves and blankets made of sheep wool but then I wondered that if I wanted to make a living out of this, how would I do it when the weather gets warmer?. By coincidence, it was Children’s day and I told to myself: “let’s make the most of this and start creating something attractive”. (here in Chile we celebrate it in August and we were close to spring so I had to do something ASAP!!!). At first, I thought about making cushions, I even made a prototype but I was not very convinced with it. Then I thought to myself, what if I make dolls? Even though I had no idea of how to make them, I tried to follow a pattern in YouTube but I did not manage to make it exactly as seen in the tutorial. Anyway it was good for me to understand how to build the shape and I decided to make a shape of my own! I did not want to copy anybody else; I wanted it to express who I am! And that’s how this adventure started!

Cómo empezaste a hacer muñecos de ganchillo?
Comencé hace un año y 7 meses, por necesidad, ya que siempre oveja comenzó primero siendo una tienda de bufandas y mantas de Lana de oveja, pero nació la interrogante, de si quería vivir de esto cómo lo iba hacer cuando llegara el calor ? , entonces justo coincidió con la celebración del día del niño y me dije "vamos aprovechar ésto y comencemos a crear algo atractivo " ( acá en Chile se celebra en agosto y estábamos próximo a la primavera así que debía hacer algo pronto !!! ) , y me planteé la idea de hacer primero cojines, hice el modelo pero no quede muy convencida y después me dije y si hago peluches ? , aunque no tenía idea cómo hacerlo intente seguir un patrón en YouTube, pero no logre hacerlo como en el tutorial , pero me sirvió para entender cómo armar la forma y decidí hacer una forma propia ! No quería copiarle a nadie, quería que fuera la expresión de quién yo soy ! Y así fue como esa aventura comenzó !

Where do you usually get inspiration when you make a doll?
Mmm, that’s a difficult question as my main source of inspiration is people themselves… When I look at them, I see their animal and that’s why I’m inspired to make these chubby dolls shaped as a biped wearing clothes. I like them to express the way I see people.
Since I was little, I always wondered about a missing link and my answer towards that question was in the evolution from animal to human but anyway, that’s a conversation I had in my mind when I was very little!

Dónde sueles encontrar inspiración cuando haces un muñeco?
Mmm es una pregunta difícil ya que mi mayor inspiración son las mismas persona . Cuando yo las miro, veo su animal y por eso me inspira hacer a los gorditos con forma de animal bípedo y ropa. Porque me gusta que sea la expresión de como yo veo a las personas.
Desde muy pequeña siempre me cuestioné cuál era el eslabón perdido y mi respuesta ante eso era la evolución del animal a humano, pero no desde el mono como único animal si no que todos evolucionaron a humano, pero bueno esa era una conversación que tenía con mi mente cuando era muy pequeña !

Your dolls are really cute. Why did you start making the doll in round shape?
Firstly, I wanted them to be unique. Even if when I started crocheting I did not know much about the amigurumi world, I asked to myself: “which artists inspire me?” and I was between Amedeo Modigliani and Fernando Botero, who finally won because I had to remain loyal to my love for circles and rounded or spherical objects!

Tus muñecos son realmente adorables. Porqué empezaste a hacer muñecos redondos?
Primero porque quería que fuera único, aunque en el momento en que comencé a tejer no conocía mucho sobre el mundo del amigurumi, Me dije a mí misma : que artistas me inspiran? y estaba entre Amedeo Modigliani y Fernando Botero, quien es el que finalmente ganó por qué debía ser fiel a mi amor por los círculos y objetos redondos o esféricos !
" Los guatones o los gorditos " los denomino así porque no siento que pertenezcan al mundo del peluche si no que tienen su propio universo .

What is the most memorable episode when you were making a doll?
I remember that when I attended my first fair, where I was deciding if I’d keep on making chubby dolls or not, a 6 or 7 year-old girl passed by. I had crocheted a red bunny; when she saw it she went crazy and I really mean it, but she did in a sweet and cute way! I think I’ve not seen such an expression ever since!! It was at that moment when I decided that this was what I wanted to do with my life!!

Cuál es tu anécdota más memorable desde que haces muñecos?
Recuerdo que cuando fui a mi primera feria, donde decidía si seguir con los guatones o no, pasó una niña de unos 6 o 7 años y yo había tejido un conejo rojo , cuando ella lo vio enloqueció, y cuando digo enloquecer realmente lo hizo, pero de una forma tierna y adorable ! Creo que nunca volví a ver una expresión igual !! Y en ese momento decidí que esto era lo que yo quería hacer en mi vida !!

What is your favorite doll to make? (I like your Chewbacca ^^)
I have three favorites! Señor Fox, Bonnie (bunny) and Blu (unicorn).
However, I enjoy crocheting them all  <3

LANAdolls Creation Lab works on ways to design hand-crocheted dolls and make them pretty and easy for everyone.

Although it is currently only in South Korea, I plan to share it with people around the world soon.

I'm always interested in knowing how other designers started crochetting and making dolls. What's your story?

I originally run an optician shop.

One day in 2013, I fell in love with an amineko brought by a client and learned about it for the first time.

Later, I learned a lot of skills by myself by reading books and with YouTube.

Creating new dolls is so much fun that I use my thread and needle almost every day.

Siempre me interesa saber cómo otros diseñadores empezaron a tejer en crochet y a hacer muñecos... ¿Cuál es tu historia?

Originalmente, gestiono una óptica. Un día, en 2013, me enamoré de un amineko que trajo un cliente y supe de ello por primera vez. Más tarde, aprendí muchas habilidades por mi misma, leyendo libros y con Youtube.

Crear nuevos muñecos es tan divertido que suelo usar mi gancho y el hilo casi cada día.

If you had to choose one of your designs to be your avatar, which one would it be?

Actually, I made my avatar in 2014. I always took it with me when I go on a trip.

Si tuvieras que elegir uno de tus diseños para que fuera tu avatar, ¿cuál sería?

De hecho, tejí mi avatar en 2014. Siempre lo llevo conmigo cuando voy de viaje.

Which would you say is the best lesson you've learnt in all those years that you'd like to share?

When you work happily, you get the best results.

¿Cuál dirías que fue la mejor lección que aprendiste en todos estos años y que te gustaría compartir?

 Disfrútalo. Cuando trabajas feliz, obtienes los mejores resultados.

As a doll designer, I usually have to face the dilemma of creating what I like or what I think other people would like. Does it happen to you? How do you manage it?

When I do my favorite work, I get the most enjoyable and the most beautiful results. 

If I start making dolls that people would like, my style might gradually fade away.

I know the reason people like my doll is because they like my style. 

So, I'll keep making the dolls that I want in the future.

Como diseñadora de muñecos, frecuentemente me encuentro en la disyuntiva entre crear lo que me gusta a mí o lo que pienso que le puede gustar a los demás... ¿Te suele pasar? ¿Cómo lo resuelves?

Cuando hago lo que más me gusta es cuando tengo los mejores resultados. Si empiezo a hacer los muñecos que la gente quiere, mi estilo iría disipándose. Se que la razón por la que a la gente le gustan mis muñecos es precisamente por mi estilo.

Por lo tanto, seguiré haciendo los muñecos que quiero.

What do you do when a project does not turn out as it was supposed to? Do you give it up and start a different one or try and try until it works?

I know that working hard will produce good results.

So, when things aren't going well, I stop and do something else.

When you want to do it, take it out again and make it.

In some cases, they can be taken out in a day or a week or a year or so to resume.

¿Qué haces cuando un proyecto no sale como lo tenías en mente? ¿Eres de abandonarlo y pensar otro o intentas hasta que sale?

Se que trabajar duro aporta buenos resultados. Por ello, cuando las cosas no van bien, paso y hago otra cosa.Cuando quieras seguir, lo sacas de nuevo y lo haces.

En algunos casos puede ser después de un día, o una semana o un año, etc.

If you could add a new technique to your designs, wchich one would it be?

Rather than add technical skill, I would like to make each doll up a story.

I want to make a photo story book or a stop motion movie. 

Si pudieras sumar una nueva técnica a tus diseños, ¿Cuál sería?

Más que una nueva técnica, me gustaría inventarme una historia para cada muñeco, me gustaría hacer un libro de historias con fotografías, o vídeos de stop motion.

My name is Carla Mitrani and I am behind Amour Fou Crochet. I found in crocheting my true passion and I enjoy it enormously. I have two small children, so I mostly crochet at night, when they are in bed, which is a true therapy for me. 

I make myself a cup of tea and let go the tensions of the day through my hooks and yarns. Before I know it, it’s 1 am in the morning!

Soy Carla Mitrani y estoy detrás de Amour Fou Crochet. Encontré en el crochet a mi verdadera pasión y lo disfruto enormemente. Tengo dos niños pequeños así que tejo mucho de noche, cuando ellos duermen, lo cual es una verdadera terapia para mí. Me hago un té y libero las tensiones del día. A veces no me doy cuenta y se me hace la 1 de la mañana!

When did you start crocheting?
I began 6 years ago. I’ve always loved amigurumis and took a short workshop with the very talented Yan, from Pica Pau. My grandmother and great grandmother were crocheters but they did mostly doilies, blankets and little baskets that they hardened with lime.

Cuándo empezaste a hacer ganchillo?
Empecé hace 6 años. Siempre me gustaron los amigurumis e hice un curso con la genia de Yan, de Pica Pau. Mi abuela y mi bisabuela tejían al crochet, pero no muñecos sino tapetitos, manteles y canastitas que endurecían con cal.

Your amigurumi designs and patterns are mainly dolls, where do you get inspiration for your dolls? Do you have a list of characters from books/films/history which are going to be Amour Fou dolls in the future?
I have always liked dolls. I can’t fool anyone because I have two boys, so all the dolls that I still buy are for me! And as a doll-lover, I crochet the dolls and characters of the books, stories and movies I like and/or, if I had a daughter, I would make for her. They are mainly women that inspire me because of their personality or for what they’ve achieved. Every year I believe I won’t have any more ideas, and luckily, something shows up or inspires me.

Tus diseños y patrones son principalmente muñecas. De dónde sacas inspiración para tus muñecas? Tienes una lista de personajes de cuentos/películas/historia que van a ser muñecas Amour Fou en el futuro?
Siempre me gustaron las muñecas. No puedo engañar a nadie porque tengo dos niños varones, así que todas las muñecas que aún compro son para mí. Y tejo las muñecas y personajes de los libros, historias y películas que me gustan a mí y que, si tuviera una hija, le haría a ella.

Son mujeres que me inspiran o que me atraen por su personalidad o por lo que han logrado. Cada año pienso que no se me van a ocurrir más y de pronto surgen o veo algo que me inspira.

Do you have any favourite yarns or tools for your crochet designs?

I only use 100% cotton yarn because I love the feel of it and, for the same reason, I don’t like wool so much, plus it makes my hands sweat. I love the matte finish of cotton. As for hooks, I have several in different brands, but currently I am using one by Addi.

Tienes lanas o herramientas favoritas para tus diseños de ganchillo?
Uso sólo hilo de algodón porque no me gusta mucho la lana y además me hace transpirar las manos. Me encanta el acabado opaco del algodón. Tengo ganchillos de varias marcas, pero ahora estoy usando unos de Addi.

You are a journalist, TV producer and amigurumi designer, are there any skills you can use in both your jobs?

I don’t believe so. I am currently the producer of a political talk show and politics and crochet have nothing to do! Like the superheroes, I have a secret identity... in fact, my boss does not know that I am a doll designer too! Anyway, I get more ideas from the books I read to my sons or the movies I see with them. They both love reading and I enjoy showing them movies from my childhood, like Back to the Future and such...

Eres periodista, productora de TV y diseñadora de a migurumis. Hay habilidades que puedes usar en ambos trabajos?
No creo. En la actualidad soy productora de un programa tipo talk show político, lo cual está muy lejos del crochet. Siempre digo que, como los superhéroes, tengo una identidad paralela... de hecho mi jefe no sabe que hago muñecos! Saco más ideas de los libros que leen mis niños o las películas que veo con ellos. A los dos les gusta leer y me encanta mostrarles películas de mi infancia, como Volver al Futuro, por ejemplo.

If you had time what craft technique would you like to learn?

EMBROIDERY!!! I love it and know only a few basic stitches! Every year I include it in my New Year’s Resolutions and so far I’ve failed. I hope to achieve it in 2018.

Si tuvieses tiempo, qué técnica craft te gustaría aprender?
¡BORDADO! Me encanta y no sé casi nada!!! Me lo anoto todos los años como Resolución en Año Nuevo y ya van como 3 años que no cumplo. Espero poder lograrlo en 2018!

Trained in Interior Design, she uses her expertise to update a traditional craft and create sculptural yarn art that translates seamlessly into classic and modern settings alike.

Erin Black empezó a tejer de niña cuando aprendió  a amar la lana por la admiración que sentía por el trabajo de sus abuelas en aquellas mantas tejidas que llegaban cada Navidad.

Formada en Diseño de Interiores, usa su experiencia para poner al día una labor tradicional y crear arte hecho con lana que podemos catalogar tanto como clásico como moderno.

How and why did you start knitting/crochetting? Which was your first work?
I started both knitting and crocheting as a young child. I had a Nan and a Granny who were very good at doing crafty things and spent a lot of time learning techniques from them; They really nurtured the crafter in me and always offered up leftover yarns and other crafting goodies for me to play with. Arts-and-crafts became such a huge part of my childhood because I loved giving gifts to family and friends, but often didn't have enough money to buy them things from the store. Out of necessity, I got really good at making up my own patterns for knit and crochet items. Some of my first projects were basic scarves and blankets, but one of my more ambitious projects was when I spent one spring bending and forming my own wreaths out of twigs I collected in the backyard. I then spent hours crocheting bunches of tiny little flowers out of bits and pieces of yarn to decorate them. I remember how proud I was to present each of my grandmothers and my Mum with a special surprise for Mother's Day.

Cómo y porqué empezaste a tejer, cuál fue tu primera pieza?
Empecé a hacer ganchillo y punto de pequeña. Mis abuelas eran muy buenas con las labores y manualidades y pasé mucho tiempo aprendiendo técnicas de ellas. Ellas realmente nutrieron a la crafter que hay en mi y siempre me ofrecían sobras de lanas y otros materiales craft para jugar con ellos.
El arts-and-crafts se convirtió en una parte muy importante de mi infancia ya que me encantaba dar regalos a mis amigos y familia, pero normalmente no tenía dinero suficiente para comprarles cosas.
Por necesidad, me hice muy buena en hacer mis propios patrones para punto y ganchillo. Algunos de mis primeros proyectos eran bufandas y mantas básicas, pero uno de mis proyectos más ambiciosos fue cuando pasé una primavera moldeando y formando mis propias coronas de ramitas que recolectaba en el patio. Entonces pasé horas tejiendo ramilletes de flores minúsculas a ganchillo, con trocitos y restos de lanas, para decorarlas.
Recuerdo lo orgullosa que estaba de ofrecer uno para cada abuela y a mi madre, como regalo para el día de la madre.

Where does your brand identity, the essence of Midknits, comes from?
I studied Interior Design at college and was really inspired by the way specific items can transform a space and also impact how people interact within a space. With Midknits my goal is to design items that will complement my client's homes and help them to curate cozy and intimate spaces.

De dónde viene tu identidad de marca, tu imagen, la esencia de Midknits?
Estudié diseño de interiores en la universidad y realmente me inspiró la forma en que algunos artículos específicos pueden transformar el espacio e incluso impactar en cómo la gente interactúa con éste.

Having a family, how do you manage to combine it woth your project? How many time do you invest it in Midknits?
Balancing work/family life can be tricky. Luckily for me, I absolutely love what I do; for me, my job and my hobby are the same thing. This means I can spend a lot of time working and it doesn't even feel like work. If you look at my pattern photos you will also notice that my kids are ever-present as the models for my creations, so we spend a lot of family time together doing photoshoots. Including my whole family in the process, and behind the scenes of Midknits, means I get to work while still spending a lot of time with them.

Teniendo familia, cómo compaginas tu proyecto, cuánto tiempo inviertes en él?
Hacer el balance trabajo/familia puede ser delicado. Afortunadamente amo lo que hago; para mi, mi trabajo y mi hobby es lo mismo. Esto significa que puedo pasar mucho tiempo trabajando y no lo siento como trabajo. Si miras las fotos de mi trabajo,  notarás que mis niños están siempre presentes como modelos para mis creaciones, por lo que pasamos mucho tiempo tiempo juntos e las sesiones fotográficas. Incluyendo a toda mi familia en el proceso, y tras las cámaras de Midknits. Por ello, consigo pasar micho tiempo con mi familia, a la vez que estoy trabajando.

I'd like to know how do you design each piece and make it into a pattern.
A lot of the inspiration for my patterns still comes from my love of giving gifts to family and friends so each one starts with an idea for something I would like to make for a loved one. I usually start with a bunch of sketches and then narrow down my design based on what sketch feels the best. It is a lot of intuition and gut-feeling, but I find my best designs are the ones I "feel" the most inspired by. Once I have the concept sorted out, the swatching begins. I spend a lot of time playing with different yarns, needles, hooks and stitch patterns until I get the combination that makes me happiest. Once I have all that sorted in my head, I sit down to write the pattern out before I start knitting or crocheting the sample. Writing my patterns before I start actually working on the items allows me to test my pattern as I create my samples. Once the sample is done it is time for photos to be taken, tutorials to be written, the pattern to be tech edited, and graphic design.

Me gustaría saber cómo proyectas cada pieza y cómo la conviertes en un patrón.
Mucha de la inspiración de mis patrones sigue viniendo de mi gusto por dar regalos a mi familia y amigos por lo que cada uno empieza con la idea de lo que me gustaría hacer para alguien querido. Normalmente empiezo con un puñado de bocetos y los voy reduciendo a los que más se ajusten a lo que busco. Es mucha intuición, pero creo que mis mejores diseños son aquellos por los que me siento más inspirada. Una vez tengo el concepto listo, empiezan las pruebas.
Paso mucho tiempo jugando con diferentes lanas, agujas, ganchos y puntos hasta que obtengo la combinación que me hace más feliz. Una vez está todo claro en mi cabeza, me siento a escribir el patrón antes de empezar a tejer la muestra. Cuando la muestra está hecha es el momento para fotos, tutoriales, patrones y diseño gráfico.

What does knitting means to you? What part of your life does it occupy?
Like a lot of knitters and crocheters, yarn has become a passion that borders on obsession. It literally occupies every space in my home and I spend quite a lot of time thinking about my next project, the next time I will get to knit or crochet, and the next yarn I am going to buy. I love designing and have a book full of sketches for patterns I have yet to write up and I still add new sketches every day. I am so lucky that I have found an outlet for me creativity and I am thrilled that I get to share some parts of myself with all of you!

Para ti qué significa tejer? Qué parte de tu vida ocupa?

Como muchas tejedoras, la lana se ha convertido en una pasión que roza la obsesión. Ocupa literalmente cada espacio de mi casa y paso bastante tiempo pensando sobre mi nuevo proyecto, sobre cuándo voy a tejer otra vez y la siguiente lana que voy a comprar. Me encantan diseñar y tengo un libro lleno de bocetos para patrones que aún tengo que escribir y sigo añadiendo nuevos cada día.
Spy tan afortunada que he encontrado una salida para mi creatividad y estoy emocionada por conseguir compartir parte de mi con todos vosotros!

Mi project Laidabekaina took its true shape when my daughter was born and filled me with inspiration. It talks about the sweetness of childhood, natural fabrics, playing with colors and doing something that fills my soul.

Since I was little, I’ve played to sew and create; art and painting have always been in my life and after giving it many thoughts, I found the closest technique to my way of being and creating, without defined patterns, simple.

Mi proyecto Laidabekaina cogió su verdadera forma cuando nació mi hija y me llenó de inspiración, habla sobre la dulzura de la infancia, de tejidos naturales, jugar con los colores, y hacer algo que me llenase el alma.

Desde pequeña he jugado a coser y crear, el arte, la pintura, siempre han estado en mi vida y después de dar muchas vueltas encontré la técnica que más se aproximaba a mi forma de ser y crear, sin patrones definidos y simple.

You design a simple, modern and vintage-inspired collection for kids. What would you design for adults if you could pick an item?
I dedicate myself professionally to the world of decoration; therefore I’d like to crochet furniture and decoration items following the same vintage aesthetics using neutral colors, such as blankets, poufs, wall hangings, cushions…

Diseñas una colección sencilla, moderna y de inspiración vintage para niños. Qué diseñarías para adultos, si pudieses elegir un artículo?
Profesionalmente me dedico al mundo de la decoración así que me gustaría hacer artículos de ganchillo para mobiliario y decoración, con la misma estética vintage y colores neutros, tipo mantas, puff, tapices, cojines..

Your beautiful and warm pictures seem to be coming out of a fairy tale. Which is your favorite fairy-tale character?
This is an easy one! My favorite tale and character is Peter Pan. I don’t only love the story but I also relate to that kid who doesn’t grow up.

Esta respuesta el fácil! Mi cuento y personaje favorito es Peter Pan, además de encantarme la historia me siento muy identificada con ese niño que no crece.

Why do you crochet? If you didn’t, which technique would you use?
I would love to create tapestries; it would be perfect to make decorative items!

Porqué haces ganchillo? Si no lo hicieses, cual sería tu técnica?
Me encantaría saber hacer macramé, para realizar piezas decorativas sería ideal!

Who/what inspires motivates you in your work?
My daughter is my inspiration. The Laidabekaina’s project as we know it now was born when I was pregnant and I thought it was the sweetest thing to make my baby’s clothes.

Mi inspiración es mi hija, el proyecto de Laidabekaina como lo conocemos ahora nació cuando estaba embarazada y me pareció lo más tierno del mundo hacerle ropita a mi bebé.

I love powdery and pastel colors even if I only use them to make the little clothes I crochet.
I think those colors represent the childhood to me.
My blue is like the sky at dusk or like the color of the sea on a stormy day.
My grey is like the stones in the paths, the rocks in the cliffs.
My yellow is like the sunflowers or the fields burnt by the sun

Me encantan los colores empolvados y pastel aunque curiosamente solo los utilizo para la ropita que tejo.
Creo que la infancia para mi son esos colores.

Mi gris es como las piedras de los caminos, las rocas de los acantilados.
