My name is Catalina, I am from Asturias and I live in Madrid.
Eight years ago I got involved into the crochet world while I was studying audiovisual communication, and I could not kick the habit anymore.
Four years ago I started my dressmaking studies and I specialized in women pattern designing. Three years ago I invested in a great invention from the 80’s, the knitting machine. I spent a year fighting against it but now I’ve got it shelved in Asturias waiting to give it some use. After two years in Asturias giving crochet lessons I am back in Madrid again to keep on educating myself in the industrial pattern world and giving crochet lessons every Tuesday.
Me llamo Catalina, soy una asturiana que vive en Madrid. Hace ocho años me embarqué en el mundo del ganchillo, mientras estudiaba Comunicación Audiovisual, y ya no pude desengancharme. Hace cuatro años comencé mis estudios de corte y confección y me especialicé en patronaje de mujer. Y hace tres invertí en un gran invento de los 80, la tricotosa. Estuve un año peleándome con ella pero ahora mismo la tengo aparcada en Asturias a la espera de darle uso. Después de dos años en Asturias impartiendo clases de ganchillo, he vuelto de nuevo a Madrid para seguir formándome en el mundo del patronaje industrial e impartiendo clases de ganchillo todos los martes.
My universe comes from drawings that became amigurumis later on or that were already created to be crocheted. The collection "mountains" was born because of the need of creating an identity and making a collection fully invented and designed by me. Hence the dolls were born straight from the idea of being that, amigurumis. They are quite basic dolls, but I have to say that it took me some time to create them; I am not very good drawing or imagining and I used to copy somebody else's ideas without meaning to do it, what was a bit frustrating. But once you succeed the satisfaction is huge.
¿De dónde sale el universo de Cataclismos con las Manos? ¿Cuál es tu inspiración?
Mi universo nace de dibujos y luego se convirtieron en amigurumis o ya fueron pensados desde el inicio para ser de ganchillo. La colección "Montañas" nació de la necesidad de crear una identidad y el sueño de realizar una colección inventada y diseñada por mi. Así que los muñecos nacieron directamente desde la idea de ser eso, amigurumis. Son muñecos bastante básicos pero la verdad es que me costó muchísimo crearlos, no soy nada buena dibujando ni imaginando y tendía muchas veces a copiar cosas de otras personas sin querer, fue bastante frustrante. Pero una vez consigues lo que quieres la satisfacción es enorme
I know you use several techniques with yarn. Which one do you use the most these days? What are you cooking?
Nowadays I am not very inspired and I am focused on some other things. I follow a pattern making course a couple of days per week and I am working in a bar a couple of nights per week... the rhythm in Madrid and the need of maintaining myself does not allow me to have many time, but it is true that I´m cooking something. On one hand, I have The Blanket Project pending. I am currently waiting for a package to arrive from Asturias with the wool I need to finish it. A diamond shaped shawl/scarf that I wanted to wear during this winter, but it seems it´s not going to happen... hehe. I hope I will be able to make it for the next one. In the other hand, some months ago I went with a couple of friends to a magic embroidery workshop with Laura Ameba. We are going to create a magic needle group called "Agujareta". The idea is to embroider the logos of our friends' music bands and many others that we like. And also to embroider on request. But taking it reeeally easy. We have not been able to meet yet, not even once ^______^
Sé que manejas varias técnicas del hilo. ¿Cuál es la que utilizas más en estos días? ¿Qué estás cocinando?
Pues ahora mismo estoy poco inspirada y centrada en otras cosillas. Voy un par de días a clase de patronaje y a parte estoy trabajando un par de noches a la semana en un bar... El ritmo de Madrid y la necesidad de mantenerme no me deja mucho tiempo para las labores pero sí que estoy cocinando alguna cosilla. Por un lado, tengo pendiente terminar el Proyecto Colcha. Ahora mismo esperando a que me llegue un paquete desde Asturias con las lanas para poder terminarla. Un chal/bufanda de rombos que pensaba ponerme este invierno, pero va a ser que no... Jejeje. Esperemos que lo tenga terminado para el siguiente. Y por otro lado, hace unos meses asistí con un par de amigas a un taller de bordado mágico con Laura Ameba. Vamos a crear un grupo de aguja mágica que se va a llamar "Agujareta". La idea es bordar logos de los grupos de música de nuestros amigos y otros que nos molan. Y tejer bordados por encargo. Pero con muuuucha calma. Todavía no hemos conseguido quedar ni una sola vez ^______^
Aside from the techniques you usually work with, is there any new technique that you would like to learn and that is not related to yarns and fabrics?
At this moment I would love to learn ceramics. One year ago, the girls from Barruntando made the deer and the mountain in ceramics, and it looked very nice. I hope I will have time to learn some day.
Además de las técnicas con las qué trabajas, ¿hay alguna nueva que te gustaría aprender que no tenga que ver con el mundo de los hilos y las telas?
Ahora mismo me encantaría aprender cerámica. Hace un año las chicas de Barruntando hicieron el ciervo y la montaña de la colección a cerámica y quedo súper bonito. Espero algún día tener tiempo para aprender.
Do you have any creative method or are you more a freestyle?
My method is looking for shapes I like, putting them in a paper and trying to crochet that, but I am not always able to make it happen.
¿Tienes un método que sigues al momento de crear o eres más freestyle?
El método que utilizo es buscar formas que me gustan, aplicarlas a un papel y de ahí intentar sacar esa misma imagen en ganchillo. Pero no siempre lo consigo.
How would you define the experience of making a living from what you do? Difficult, awesome, crazy?
Well, I could actually not define that because I never made a living of it. I have tried indeed, but it has not worked out yet. I may not have invested enough efforts or maybe I am lacking some marketing knowledge. What I can tell you about is dedicating more than 8 hours per day to something you like without making a profit of it. It is quite frustrating but rewarding at the same time. Being able to invest that time in learning and trying to make something work has been great. I have learnt a lot and I quit for the moment. I will try other things now but I repeat, just for the moment.
¿Cómo definirías la experiencia de vivir de lo que haces? ¿Difícil, genial, locura?
Pues no podría definir esa experiencia porque nunca he conseguido vivir de ello. Sí lo he intentado pero de momento no me ha funcionado. Quizá no le he puesto el empeño necesario o me faltan conocimientos en lo que se refiere a marketing. De lo que sí te puedo hablar es de dedicar más de 8 horas al día en algo que te gusta y no conseguir beneficio económico. Frustra bastante pero a la vez es bastante enriquecedor. Poder haber invertido esa parte de mi tiempo en aprender e intentar sacar algo adelante ha sido genial. He aprendido un montón y por el momento me retiro de ese empeño. Ahora a probar por otros sitios pero repito, de momento.
