Molla Mills entrevista a... Maria Gullberg!

I have been working with crochet in the focus of 30 years. The advantage of crocheting is that it is easy to scratch up if errors occur. What most amazes me is that with the years that go so can I see that my own development of pattern/structure becomes better and better all the time. During the past few years I have made some patterns, which I think is among the best I have been designed over the years. It gives me an incredible feeling that my creativity is moving in the right direction through hard work!

And the most important of all when it comes to crocheting is that you have fun and at the same time it gives a feeling of joy. We are many who crochet in the world and through social media, we get new friends. Long live the hook!!!

How did you learn to crochet? Do you think kids should keep on learning manual skills in a basic school, especially handicrafts? We have had crafts in Finnish schools for decades, everyone had to take sewing classes and wood working classes. I was really inspired by this, but I also know there are many who got traumatized by this. How is it in Sweden?
My mother taught me to crochet when I was about 9 years old. But I was around 13 when I was on summer holiday and I crocheted in cotton yarn DMC 70, thinnest hook that was (Boye 15), and cloths that contained over 300 yards. When I was finished, they were not so large because of the thin yarn and crochet hook!

We also have had crafts in Swedish schools for decades, in both sewing classes and wood working classes. I remember that I rather had wood working, since the textile and sewing was not really my thing.

A few years ago was craft classes here in Sweden - and especially sewing classes - up in the various debates since the School board thought the other topics were more important!!!!!

Your patterns have a strong tribal vibe in them. Are you inspired by any special fashion?
My inspiration for creating designs comes from all possible directions - I see patterns everywhere! It can be from an art exhibition, older crafts and textile..... The graphical meeting between light and dark appeals to me a lot and I have been greatly inspired by walks in the city or out in nature. Other cultures/countries treasures of the patterns appeals to me, as for example in Africa which has wonderful designs and in vibrant colors.

How do you feel about being creative and working on a craft field, or do you have other profession besides of handicrafts?
I have at times been able to support myself on crocheting since I went out of my textile education 1989 with project of crochet that has been going on for several years. Has also worked with exhibitions, lectures, courses, workshops, training of textile teachers and students. As well as the publication of several books. But I have supported myself in part for other jobs such as work as personal assistant, receptionist at various museums and in museums shop. Also working at times with graphic design for small companies.

Working creatively is not an option for me, but it is about the entire me as a person. I have always been creative since I was little and drew/painted on a daily basis. I have been lucky in life and to be able to support myself on my crocheting.

He sido siempre creativa, desde pequeña he pintado y dibujado diariamente.

What would be the best achievement in your career? The ultimate goal why you do crafts and books?
It is actually from my master's thesis on College education, bachelor's degree in textile design, Konstfack, Stockholm, Sweden. I had both knitting and crocheting as my graduation project and it was not ”com il faut” that you crocheted on the school I went 1985-1989. My opponent was Inez Svensson (known textile designers in Sweden and the Nordic countries) and she said that I would bet on crocheting because no designer was doing that before me and in itself had not been developed for many decades here in Sweden. I took the gravity of her advice.

Do you think crafting can be a language between people from different places?
Definitely, it is so! We don't need to understand what the other says but in the crafts unite we have a common language that we can share with others and each other.

Sheepdays entrevista a... Molla Mills!

Hola, I'm Molla, craft book author from Finland. My books are all about modern crochet patterns, I use simple stitches to create geometric patterns, that have become my designer trademark. At the moment I work on my online pattern boutique, where you can find all my coolest patterns and get some yarn tips. :)

Half of the world is amazed by your designs, we want to know, who amazes you? What or who inspires you?
Anything that catches the eye inspires me. It may be a simple street sign, colorful socks someone is wearing, a random graffiti on the wall, anything! I try to stay far from the usual path and start designing a new pattern with absolutely no idea what the result would be. But somehow most of the time the result is a bag, I love making bags!

Have you thought about moving to knitting? Don’t get me wrong, no one wants you to put crochet to the side but, could we find this kind of evolution in your work?
Many times! But my knitting skills are very limited, holding the needles always give me a headache and I always end up with a weird shape. I can definitely see most of my patterns made by knitting, I just need to team up with someone who is good in this technique. I started my crochet career with a book store survey, there were at least 20 knitting books for every crochet book on the shelf, I found a serious lack of modern crochet books. Now I would love to see my pattern turned into knitted garments, woven textiles and why not embroidered as well.

At the moment you are right in the middle of your ‘Modern Crochet World Tour’ travelling around, I am very curious about the different cultures and places you have visited ( I’m very jealous about it, so if next time you need a sidekick, I volunteer :) ) Could you tell us please things that have surprised you the most, in a human level, from other countries? Any other things food or gossip related are welcome too!
There is a lot to tell about my crochet adventures, but to sum it all up, I absolutely love the crochet communities worldwide! Crafty people in different countries are the best, they make my work worth all the effort. My 5 month-long Latin American tour started by posting a question on Instagram, I asked if any yarn shop would like to host a workshop with me in Brazil. I ended up teaching also in Chile, Peru, and Mexico, there was a lot of response on that Instagram post! It was my first time in Latin America, I travel with an open mind and let all the new things inspire me. There is enough inspiration for several new pattern books!

During the last four years, I have traveled a lot, but this was the first time when I actually got to meet other crocheters and so many of them! Everyone took so good care of me, I was taken to nice places to taste local food, I got some good tips about where to get the best yarn and I was even taken to a local alpaca farm in Chile! The hospitality in Latin America was amazing, and now I look forward to starting my Latam tour number 2.

I would say the best tip to travel well is to keep an open mind and go on an adventure. Don't plan too much ahead, always leave room for surprises.

Regarding the ‘human level’, there’s a lot of talk about ‘community’ inside the knitting and crochet world. Do you feel part of that big community or do you consider yourself a free spirit? This is because I would like to know, what opinion do you have about the knitting/crochet community? Is there anything that, in your opinion, could be improve?
I like the idea of being part of the community, but I want to be part of many different communities. There is a lot of competition in a craft world, but I prefer openness, sharing and respecting others, inside and outside of the communities. I do feel a certain difference between knitters and crocheters, I hope there would be more interaction between these two crafts

To end with, and to lift up all the intensity of my previous questions, a light question that always makes a great impression : tell us 5 things you’d like to do when you come back to Spain! We’ll try to make your wishes come true :)
I would like to meet as many crocheters as possible, visit a local yarn factory, learn at least10 new words in Spanish, maybe some salsa steps too, and enjoy a good local beer.

Marina Opina: CROCHETTERIE by Molla Mills

Photos by Julia Marco

Oh my gosh! Hot off the press review! I am thrilled to write a review about Molla Mills´ latest book release... Crochetterie! a.k.a Virkkuri 3

If I was already over the moon when I started collaborating with this section because I did it speaking about Molla Mills as I plead guilty of being a big fan of hers, I do feel happy as a clam again because we are bringing you something that is brand new (of course I am referring to the English version; the Finnish one is already available for a while). I actually bought it during the pre-sale somewhere back in April and when I finally received it not much longer than a week ago, it felt like a memorable moment that one of opening the package and having it for the first time. If you want to go for it you will find it available in amazon as well as in Molla Mills´own website.

¡Ay!

If we already saw many different applications for the home, accessories or jewelry in Modern Crochet, you will find so many new ideas in Crochetterie that you will be willing to take a month off to be able to make it all. Terrific rugs, bags, a backpack, clothes... and wait because that's not all, folks: it's also gender-free. That idea of thinking that crochet is only suitable for girls is something we can discuss once you go through her creations. Actually many of the designs she includes are truly masculine, not only because of the design itself but also because of the neutral colours that she usually works with.

We find again a consistent book divided by sections that still includes basic instructions for those who want to go through them together with projects that I can ensure you've not seen before. I must confess that I felt instantly touched with one of her projects, what is comprehensible if you bear in mind the lovely bond that I have with Finland as I've already mentioned uncountable times, because it is a banner of the band Korpiklaani, that I find really funny. A woman that makes a crochet book including a tribute to a folk metal band, that gives it a very masculine touch and that shows her handsome father carrying an axe with grace as the model for a jumper can only make me admire her.
If this was not enough, you will find a Maintenance section at the end including stretching exercises performed by her brother, who is a yoga instructor, to end up any crochet session on the proper way.

MY PROJECT

To close this Finnish circle that strongly motivates me and to link it with the familiar side of Molla´s book, the project I've chosen is the carry cushion that my beloved father will be happy to use in those moments when his back gives him a hard time. Of course he will be very stylish while doing it, what makes me understand that he will be glad to take it out as often as possible. I could not choose any other colour than sinivalkoinen which is the name given to the combination of blue and white as seen in the Finnish flag :)

I am looking forward to read your comments which I expect to be very positive and I leave you this time with a question which answer will be considered depending on what comes by popular demand: let's say Molla´s second book called Virkkuri 2 is only available in Finnish. Let´s say I have it here by my side. Would you like to read a review about it even though?
Let it sink in :)

I will see you here from now on with more books, reviews and projects!

By Marina D. Bárcenas

In order to honour my platonic love for Finland, we will start having a look at "ModernCrochet" by Molla Mills.

Mentioning Molla Mills is talking about reinventing tapestry crochet and the use of rug yarn. As the title of her first book honestly and plainly indicates (she´s got already a third book in Finland), Molla adapts crochet to modern life creating accessories and projects for home; from folding an ugly cable making it beautiful to bags, rugs, jewelry and anything you can imagine, including what she calls pixel crochet, consisting of drawing motifs on graph paper that will be repeated to make a pattern in a single color.

Talking about colors, she usually goes for black and white to design her patterns with a rockabilly touch sometimes, but always minimalist and nordic. There are even some brands that use her patterns to sell their products in the shape of a rug or a bag.

All in all, this book offers you 32 projects that will allow you to give your home a new look and to make a nice present for yourself.

MY PROJECT

Going through the patterns, which are presented by categories, you will find the difficulty level, size, recommended hook and yarn and approximated weight of the finished project. I got down to work and decided to make a rag yarn vase, which I choose because of its cute shape, perfect for my place.

If you are expecting to find patterns explained row by row as you may be used to, you may not find Molla easy to understand as she has her own way to explain the process. I personally don't find her easy to follow if you are a beginner. She includes explained step-by-step photos, but she does it her way. I would highly recommend you before starting to work in one of her patterns that you better read through it and if it´s a tapestry crochet pattern, that you draw what you read before starting, because you will definitely save time and avoid undoing what you have already crocheted until you understand what she means.

As a result, here we go with the rag yarn vase versioned by myself, as I used two different colors instead of one... dip dye is also stylish:

Last but not least, the final part of Modern Crochet seems quite interesting to me as I had never seen in before: finishing touches section. To give your project a professional look she shows you how to make labels and as the cherry on top, she refers to the crocheter's well-being with exercises and care suggestions.

I will see you here from now on with more books, reviews and projects!
