Sheepdays entrevista a... Molla Mills!

Hola, I'm Molla, craft book author from Finland. My books are all about modern crochet patterns, I use simple stitches to create geometric patterns, that have become my designer trademark. At the moment I work on my online pattern boutique, where you can find all my coolest patterns and get some yarn tips. :)

Half of the world is amazed by your designs, we want to know, who amazes you? What or who inspires you?
Anything that catches the eye inspires me. It may be a simple street sign, colorful socks someone is wearing, a random graffiti on the wall, anything! I try to stay far from the usual path and start designing a new pattern with absolutely no idea what the result would be. But somehow most of the time the result is a bag, I love making bags!

Have you thought about moving to knitting? Don’t get me wrong, no one wants you to put crochet to the side but, could we find this kind of evolution in your work?
Many times! But my knitting skills are very limited, holding the needles always give me a headache and I always end up with a weird shape. I can definitely see most of my patterns made by knitting, I just need to team up with someone who is good in this technique. I started my crochet career with a book store survey, there were at least 20 knitting books for every crochet book on the shelf, I found a serious lack of modern crochet books. Now I would love to see my pattern turned into knitted garments, woven textiles and why not embroidered as well.

At the moment you are right in the middle of your ‘Modern Crochet World Tour’ travelling around, I am very curious about the different cultures and places you have visited ( I’m very jealous about it, so if next time you need a sidekick, I volunteer :) ) Could you tell us please things that have surprised you the most, in a human level, from other countries? Any other things food or gossip related are welcome too!
There is a lot to tell about my crochet adventures, but to sum it all up, I absolutely love the crochet communities worldwide! Crafty people in different countries are the best, they make my work worth all the effort. My 5 month-long Latin American tour started by posting a question on Instagram, I asked if any yarn shop would like to host a workshop with me in Brazil. I ended up teaching also in Chile, Peru, and Mexico, there was a lot of response on that Instagram post! It was my first time in Latin America, I travel with an open mind and let all the new things inspire me. There is enough inspiration for several new pattern books!

During the last four years, I have traveled a lot, but this was the first time when I actually got to meet other crocheters and so many of them! Everyone took so good care of me, I was taken to nice places to taste local food, I got some good tips about where to get the best yarn and I was even taken to a local alpaca farm in Chile! The hospitality in Latin America was amazing, and now I look forward to starting my Latam tour number 2.

I would say the best tip to travel well is to keep an open mind and go on an adventure. Don't plan too much ahead, always leave room for surprises.

Regarding the ‘human level’, there’s a lot of talk about ‘community’ inside the knitting and crochet world. Do you feel part of that big community or do you consider yourself a free spirit? This is because I would like to know, what opinion do you have about the knitting/crochet community? Is there anything that, in your opinion, could be improve?
I like the idea of being part of the community, but I want to be part of many different communities. There is a lot of competition in a craft world, but I prefer openness, sharing and respecting others, inside and outside of the communities. I do feel a certain difference between knitters and crocheters, I hope there would be more interaction between these two crafts

To end with, and to lift up all the intensity of my previous questions, a light question that always makes a great impression : tell us 5 things you’d like to do when you come back to Spain! We’ll try to make your wishes come true :)
I would like to meet as many crocheters as possible, visit a local yarn factory, learn at least10 new words in Spanish, maybe some salsa steps too, and enjoy a good local beer.
