Crochatting: BruDIY entrevista a... Ameskeria!

Hoy estrenamos sección (me tiemblan las piernas, no os digo más)! Crochatting son conversaciones de ganchillo entre colegas. Todas ellas son grandes artistas a las que admiro y a las que me quiero parecer cuando sea mayor. Veréis cómo, a pesar de compartir disciplina, no tienen absolutamente nada que ver una con otra, cada una tiene una historia totalmente distinta que contarnos.Y arrancamos nada más y nada menos que con BruDiy entrevistando a ....

I am Leire Villar, Basque born adopted in Barcelona and I started the Ameskeria blog in 2009.

Ameskeria means imagination, chimera. That which is not real, which only exists in your mind and only you can see.

I like it because even if I am aware that it is a difficult name, I think it is strongly related to what creativity means to me. What can only be seen by you, what is only in your mind... until you shape it.
I use Ameskeria to bring my creative curiosities together: mainly crochet and photography but also illustration, communication, character creation, art direction... the beauty of such a broad definition is that there is place for everything.
Besides shaping Ameskeria I am a co-founder of the e-magazine Ganchitos, I teach how to crochet in several locations in Barcelona and I am a member of Guerrilla de Ganxet.

Soy Leire Villar, vasca de nacimiento y barcelonesa de adopción, y abrí el blog de Ameskeria en el 2009.
Ameskeria significa imaginación, quimera. Aquello que no es real, que solo está en tu mente y solo tu puedes ver. Aunque soy consciente de que es un nombre difícil, me gusta porque creo que está muy relacionado con lo que para mí significa la creatividad. Aquello que solo tu puedes ver, que solo está en tu mente… hasta que le das forma.
Ameskeria me sirve para aglutinar mis inquietudes creativas: principalmente ganchillo y fotografía, pero también ilustración, comunicación, creación de personajes, dirección de arte… Lo bueno de una definición tan amplia es que todo tiene cabida.Además de dar forma a Ameskeria, soy cofundadora de la revista digital de patrones Ganchitos , imparto clases de ganchillo en diferentes centros de Barcelona y soy miembro de la Guerrilla de Ganxet.

Crochet lovers are really into taking on new challenges, finding new materials, techniques and crochet stitches. What is your latest discovery?
What appeals to me most is the acquisition of useless knowledge. In this regard I am delighted by the electro-textile world. Being able to integrate soft circuits and using small lights in my creations quite fascinates me.

A los amantes del ganchillo nos encanta ponernos retos, descubrir nuevos materiales, técnicas y puntos de ganchillo. Cuál es tu último descubrimiento?
A mí personalmente me chifla adquirir conocimientos un poco inútiles. En este sentido estoy encantada con el mundo del electro-textil. La posibilidad de integrar circuitos blandos y poner lucecitas a mis muñecos me tiene bastante fascinada.

Are you one of those who piles up “to-do projects” in a Pinterest board? Is there any crochet project that you are longing to try?
Ideas go always round and round in my mind but I am more into piling up unfinished projects. I have thousands of those. I could even create a museum of unfinished pieces.
I am longing to give a try to the clothing world. Jackets, jumpers, skirts or crocheted dresses. That is pending.

Eres de las que acumulan "Proyectos para hacer" en una carpetita de Pinterest? Hay algún proyecto de ganchillo que quieras probar de realizar desde hace tiempo?
Siempre tengo ideas rondando acerca de cosas que me gustaría hacer, pero soy más de acumular proyectos sin terminar. De esos tengo miles. Podría hacer un museo de piezas inacabadas.
Respecto a lo que me gustaría probar desde hace tiempo es el mundo prenda de vestir. Chaquetas, jerséis, faldas o vestidos de ganchillo. Eso lo tengo pendiente.

What kind of yarn do you use? Any preference?
I like natural fibers. For dolls and accessories I like cotton, specially for those chubby ones that are crocheted with a 5 or 6 mm needle because you will have something great straight away.
For warm clothes my preference goes to alpaca wool.

Qué tipo de hilo sueles usar para tejer? Tienes alguna preferencia?
Me gustan las fibras naturales. Para muñecos y complementos, el algodón, especialmente aquellos gorditos que se tejen con un 5 o un 6, porque enseguida tienes algo resultón.
Para prendas abrigadas tengo predilección por la alpaca.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words... could you share with us some tips or tricks to take good pictures even if we don't have any professional material?
I am a very minimal person when it comes to photography. I think that you can get better results by using less items which have been carefully chosen rather than using many, even if they are all beautiful separately. Combining less items is easier.
If you have no light sources it is very important that you make the most of natural light. Taking pictures in the morning and if you don't have a bright house or studio, going outside and playing with public elements: outdoor wooden tables, particularly textured walls, metallic park benches or beautiful tiles. Keeping an eye on locations offered by your surroundings can make things easier.
Sometimes a product stands out by itself if simply placed on a very beautiful background: and old piece of wood, watercolour paper, a rusty sheet of metal...

Se dice que una imagen vale más que mil palabras... Qué consejos o trucos puedes compartir con nosotros para conseguir buenas fotografías de producto aunque no contemos con material profesional?
Yo soy muy mínimal a la hora de hacer fotos. Creo que pocos elementos bien escogidos dan mejor resultado que muchos, aunque sean todos muy bonitos por separado. Es más fácil combinar pocas cosas.
Si no se dispone de focos, es muy importante aprovechar al máximo la luz natural. Hacer las fotos por la mañana y si tu casa o estudio no son luminosos, salir al exterior y jugar con los elementos públicos: mesas de madera de merenderos, muros con texturas especiales, bancos metálicos o baldosas bonitas. Estar atento a las localizaciones que ofrece tu entorno te puede facilitar mucho las cosas.
A veces un producto destaca por sí mismo solo con colocarlo sobre un fondo bien bonito: una madera antigua, un papel de acuarela, una lámina de metal oxidado...

Do you think that being present in many different social media is essential to make your product known? Which is your favourite?
Presence in social media is important but it does not ensure success. Only a small percentage of all your followers will also become your customers. In this regard, social relationships are more important. Your first contact will generally come from the internet but you'll have to connect with people in a more personal way.
Internet is very, very wide. Unmanageable. It is quite difficult to stand out among all those beautiful things and talented people. It is your personal story what makes the difference.
Regarding my favourite social media I would choose Instagram. I do enjoy the format and I feel comfortable with it.

Consideras que la presencia en muchas redes sociales es imprescindible para dar a conocer tu producto? Cuál es tu preferida?
La presencia en las redes es importante, pero no te asegura el éxito. De todos tus seguidores sólo un pequeño porcentaje serán también tus clientes. En este sentido son más importantes las relaciones personales que uno establece. El primer contacto vendrá generalmente por medio de internet, pero luego necesitas conectar con las personas de una forma mucho más personal.
La red es muy muy amplia. Inabarcable. Es difícil destacar en esa inmensidad de cosas bonitas y gente con talento. Es tu historia personal lo que hace la diferencia.
Respecto a la red que me gusta más, elegiría Instagram. Es un formato que disfruto y con el que me siento cómoda.

Karl Toffeln, Minus' favourite cousin

Meet Karl, the new family member.

Os presento a Karl, el nuevo miembro de la familia.

Karl is 25 years "young". He comes from Germany, from the bottom of The Alps, and he spent most of his life on top of mountains. He's passionate about plants and he's always looking for new species to add to his "Journal of Plants"

Karl likes the mountains, but his biggest passion are the cacti. This is why he doesn't miss an opportunity to travel to warmer climates to photograph his favourite plants. He's a young adventurer and dreamer, and one might say he could be coming from a different century.

Karl es un joven de unos 25 años. Viene de Alemania, de la zona de los Alpes, y se ha pasado media vida subido a una montaña. Su pasión son las plantas y siempre anda buscando nuevas especies que anota en su "Cuaderno de Plantas".

A Karl le gusta la montaña, pero lo que en realidad le apasiona son los cactus. Por eso aprovecha cualquier oportunidad que tiene para viajar a zonas más cálidas y fotografiar algunas de sus plantas favoritas. Es un tipo aventurero y soñador, a veces me parece que es de otro siglo.

In the last few days Karl has been visiting his family. Minus loves hanging out with his favourite cousin, to him he's the most interesting person in the world. He can spend countless hours listening to Karl's adventures from all over the continent. He always carries a backpack with rare things that he found that nobody knows what they are. It is a great mystery!

When cousin Karl is visiting, everyday is an expedition. Going to the forest, to the mountain and to the lake. They pretend to be in a secret mission in which they have to find a particular plant in order to save the life of a VIP. Everything is marked "top secret" . Karl brings the thrill to everything.

Estos días está de visita en casa de su familia. A Minus le encanta estar con su primo mayor, le parece la persona más interesante del mundo. Puede pasar horas escuchando sus aventuras por aquí y por allá. Siempre lleva encima una mochila llena de cosas raras que nadie sabe qué son. Es tan misterioso!

Cuando el primo Karl está en casa, todos los días salen de expedición. Van al bosque, a la montaña, al lago... Karl les cuenta que están en una misión secreta y que tienen  que conseguir determinadas plantas para salvar la vida de alguien muy importante. Todo es siempre "Top Secret" y "cuestión de vida o  muerte". Con Karl la emoción está asegurada.

For this pattern I was inspired by the figure of "the big brother", which is so important as children. They're our references, they clear the path for us and they taught us through their experiences. Sometimes we admire them and sometimes we're like peas in a pod, we can't live without them.

I've also been inspired by the fact that a part of my family is in Germany and I've never met them. I only met one cousin once, when it was my grandmother's 90th birthday and he was given a permit to leave East Germany for a few weeks. I was very little, he was very big and everything was very mysterious...

Para este patrón me he inspirado en esa figura del primo o el hermano mayor, que es tan importante cuando somos pequeños. Son nuestra referencia, los que nos abren camino y nos enseñan a través de sus experiencias. A veces les admiramos y otras nos llevamos como el perro y el gato, no podemos vivir con ellos ni sin ellos. 

También me he inspirado en el hecho de que tengo parte de familia en Alemania a la que nunca he conocido. Únicamente conocí a un primo al que dejaron salir un par de semanas de la zona oriental por motivo del 90 cumpleaños de mi abuela. Yo era muy pequeña, él era muy mayor, y todo era muy misterioso...

Karl's pattern consists of a 12 pages PDF pattern. It's full of pictures of Karl, all kind of instructions and step by step photos. It also has an intro with tutorials of the basic and not so basic stitches that you'll need to follow the pattern.

This pattern represents a very interesting challenge to the newbie crocheter who wants to take a step forward and start combining stitches and techniques, you'll feel very proud of the results. I've leveled it as "intermediate" because, despite of it's made with well known stitches, Karl is full of little details that makes it very complete. For those who already are expert crocheters, you'll find this pattern very fun and assorted, as it has embroidery, pompom making, fringes... You'll fall in love with Karl just after the first rounds, you'll see... as soon as you start crocheting with the stonewashed blue, pretending to be jeans, your imagination will start flying...

El patrón de Karl Toffeln consiste en un PDF de 12 páginas. Está repleto de fotografías de Karl, todo tipo de instrucciones y fotos del paso a paso. Tiene también una introducción con tutoriales de los puntos básicos y menos básicos que necesitarás para seguir el patrón.

Este patrón supone un reto muy interesante para la ganchillera novata que quiere dar un paso más y empezar a combinar puntos y técnicas, con él aprenderéis y os sentiréis orgullosas del resultado. Lo he calificado como nivel intermedio ya que, a pesar de tratarse de puntos muy conocidos para la mayoría, Karl está lleno de pequeños detalles que lo hacen más completo. Aquellas que ya controláis la aguja, encontraréis este patrón divertido y variado, ya que tiene bordado, pompones, flecos... Os enamoraréis de Karl en cuando llevéis unas pocas vueltas, ya veréis... en cuanto empiezas a tejer ese hilo jaspeado, imitando unos vaqueros, la imaginación empieza a volar...

Minus' crochet cactus pattern

For those who already have Minus and Pickles patterns, this cactus should look very familiar since it's one of the main "characters" of the photoset that I use for Mijn Grote Familie. Because... who doesn't love cactuses? They come in thousands of different shapes and colours. You'll find one in almost each house, so we definitely needed one crochet cactus in our little miniature amigurumi house .

Las que tenéis los patrones de Minus y Pickles lo conocéis ya, ya que suele ser un protagonista clave en mis fotos de Mijn Grote Familie. Y es que... a quién no le gustan los cactus? Los hay de mil formas y colores distintos. Es rara la casa en que no hay alguno, por lo que claro, en nuestra pequeña casa en miniatura de amigurumis no podía faltar un cactus de ganchillo.

The internet is full of crochet cactus, you just have to have a look into pinterest and you'll find an endless variety of patterns. This one is quite simple and basic, suitable for beginners. I recommend you that, if you like it, take the time to make a good research and buy yourself a nice pattern. Another great idea would be that you try to design your own, which is always fun, and... I bet that whatever it looks like, there's a cactus in Nature that looks exactly the same!

Internet está repleto de cactus de ganchillo, no tienes más que pasearte 5 minutos por la blogosfera o por pinterest y encontrarás infinita variedad de patrones. Este que os traigo yo es bien sencillito y básico, para principiantes. Os aconsejo que si os gusta, investigueis y os compréis algún patrón, que los hay realmente maravillosos. También podéis innovar e inventaros los vuestros propios, que siempre es muy divertido. Y... apuesto a que sea cual sea el resultado, seguro que hay algún cactus parecido en la Naturaleza!

These are the materials you're going to need:

• Green cotton yarn
• Brown cotton yarn
• A suitable crochet hook for your yarn. (Since Minus is crocheted with a 2,5mm hook, I've used this one for the cactus as well.)
• Clay pot (I bought mine in a miniatures shop. If you can't find any try to make one yourself, for example with the cap of a softener bottle. Paint it or cover it with crochet)
• Pipe cleaner
• Polyfill stuffing
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors

Los materiales que vas a necesitar son:

• Un poco de algodón verde
• Un poco de algodón marrón
• Una aguja de ganchillo adecuada (en este caso, como es un cactus para Minus, lo he hecho con la misma aguja de 2,5 mm que he usado para hacerlo a él)
• Maceta para el cactus (yo he usado una pequeña maceta de arcilla que encontré en una tienda de miniaturas, si no encuentras ninguna puedes usar por ejemplo un tapón de suavizante y forrarlo de ganchillo, o pintarlo...)
• Limpiapipas
• Relleno sintético
• Aguja lanera
• Tijeras

Our basic cactus consists of a body, an arm and a base:

Body:
Foundation row: Using the green cotton yarn, chain 21
1st round: 20 single crochet (sc)
2nd to 14th round: chain 1, 20 sc in back loop (bl)

Once you've crocheted the rectangle, you have to join the first and the last round, with the tapestry needle, in order to form a cylinder, as you can see on the pictures above. Now you have to close one of the cylinder ends, by passing the tapestry needle through each of the row ends and pulling the yarn until you close it. The body is ready.

Nuestro cactus básico consta de 3 partes: cuerpo, brazo y base:

Cuerpo:
Cadeneta base: Con el algodón verde haz 21 cadenetas (cad)
1ª fila: 20 puntos bajos (pb)
2ª a 14ª fila: 1 cad y 20 pb en back loop (bl)

Una vez has tejido tu rectángulo tienes que unir la primera y la última fila, con la aguja lanera, para formar un cilindro, como ves en las fotos.
Ahora debes cerrar uno de los extremos del cilindro. Pasa la aguja lanera por cada una de los extremos de las filas y tira del hilo hasta cerrar el agujero. Ya tienes listo el cuerpo.

For the arm you'll follow the same system but changing the number of chains and rows:

Arm:
Foundation row: Using the green cotton yarn, chain 19
1st row: 18 sc
2nd to 7th row: chain 1, 18 sc

Now close the cylinder and the end as you've made with the body and insert the pipe cleaner. Give the shape that you like and attach it to the body. You can add more arms, change the number of chains and rows and create different cactuses. Try new things!

You can now stuff the body a bit (different amount of stuffing will also provide different looks), and let's see the last part, the base.

Para el brazo seguiremos el mismo sistema pero variando un poco el número de cadenetas base y de filas:

Brazo:
Cadeneta base: Con al algodón verde haz 19 cad
1ª fila: 18 pb
2ª a 7ª fila: 1 cad, 18 pb

Ahora cierra el cilindro y el extremo al igual que has hecho con el cuerpo y pon el limpiapipas dentro. Dale la forma que quieras y cóselo con la aguja lanera al cuerpo. Esta es otra oportunidad para experimentar, pon tantos brazos como quieras, haz distintos brazos, más largos, más anchos... Prueba cosas nuevas!

Ya puedes rellenar un poco el cuerpo (dependiendo de la cantidad de relleno tu cactus se verá diferente) y pasamos a la última parte, la tierra.

For the base, we'll use the proportional increasing technique. In my case I've only needed 5 rounds, you can keep increasing as long as you need to reach the size of the pot circumference.

Base:
1st round: 6 sc in a magic ring.
2nd round: 6 increases (inc) (12 sc)
3rd round: (1 sc, 1 inc) x6 (24 sc)
4th round: (2 sc, 1 inc) x6 (30 sc)
5th round: (3 sc, 1 inc) x6 (36 sc)
6th round: 36 sc in bl
7th and 8th rounds: 36 sc

Para la base utilizaremos el método del aumento proporcional. En mi caso sólo me ha hecho falta llegar a la 5ª fila, tú puedes seguir aumentando hasta lo que necesites hasta llegar a la circunferencia de la maceta.

Base:
1ª vuelta (vta.): Con el algodón marrón, 6 pb en anillo mágico.
2ª vta.: 6 aumentos (aum) (12 pb)
3ª vta.: (1 pb, 1 aum) x6 (24 pb)
4ª vta.: (2 pb, 1 aum) x6 (30 pb)
5ª vta.: (3 pb, 1 aum) x6 (36 pb)
6ª vta.: 36 pb en bl
7ª y 8ª vta.: 36 pb

Now you just have to attach the body to the base with the tapestry needle. Adjust the base into the pot and that's it. You know that cactuses like water but not in excess so don't water it too much. Take care of it as Minus would do!

Ya sólo te falta unir el cuerpo a la base. Cóselos con la aguja lanera, bien centrado y encaja la base en la maceta. Ya sabes que a los cactus les gusta el agua, pero no con demasiada frecuencia, así que no no te pases con los riegos. Cuidalo como lo cuidaría Minus!

By the way... Minus' cousin, Karl, is over here these days. Well, turns out that he's a cactuses fan, can you believe it?! So he's helping Minus to take care of his and he's also starting to prepare the garden for the springtime. Honestly I think it's too early for that, but whatever... we all have our own way...

Por cierto, estos días está por aquí el primo de Minus, Karl. Bien, pues resulta que es un fanático de los cactus! Le está ayudando a Minus a cuidar el suyo, y además está empezando a preparar el jardín para la primavera. A mi, la verdad, me parece que aún es muy pronto para eso, pero allá cada uno y sus manías...
