My name is Gemma, crafter and blogger. Knitting and teaching others how wonderful it is to learn how to do something with your own hands is part of my daily routine. I also have a small online shop where I sell leather notebooks for paper and analogue lovers.

Mi nombre es Gemma, soy crafter y blogger. Hacer punto y enseñar a otros lo maravilloso que es aprender a hacer algo con sus propias manos es parte de mi día a día. También tengo una pequeña tienda online donde vendo cuadernos de piel para amantes de lo analógico y el papel.

Some time ago, you spoke about your beginnings in your blog and something that really surprised me about how you started knitting is that nobody knits or crochets in your family, but nevertheless you found this path. Do you think it is more difficult to find out about it for those who did not have it at home with their mother o grannies? Or, on the other hand, is knitting an easy-to-choose option reachable for anybody with curiosity?
I actually don't know how did I get my wires crossed that way to decide I wanted to learn how to knit, hahaha. I was surely looking to do something creative, and I could have chosen something else like painting, for example (what I´ve also done when I was younger), but knitting has something special that no other hobby has: you can wear what you've knitted, making wonderful presents for the people you know and designing your own clothes putting a little effort. And wool feels so pleasant! 
Of course in that time, more than ten years ago already, knitters were not so known as they are now, so it was very complicated to reach it without any family reference. Nowadays, however, I believe it is much easier, because knitting is on fashion. But I found my little group of knitters and on the weekends I used to go two hours by train to be able to knit with other girls who were doing the same. In fairness, if I had not gone to these meetings, nothing would be the same.

En tu blog contaste hace tiempo cómo fueron tus inicios y algo que me sorprendió mucho de cómo empezaste a tejer es que nadie de tu familia hace punto o ganchillo y aun así tú encontraste este camino. ¿Crees que más difícil dar con él para la gente que no lo ha vivido en casa con su madre o con sus abuelas? ¿O por el contrario, tejer es una opción sencilla de elegir al alcance de cualquiera con inquietudes?
La verdad es que no sé cómo se me cruzaron los cables de esa manera, para decidir que quería aprender a tejer, jajaja. Seguramente lo que buscaba era hacer algo creativo, y podría haber escogido otra cosa, como por ejemplo pintar (que es algo que también he hecho varios años cuando era jovencita), pero tejer tiene algo especial que otras aficiones no tienen: puedes llevar lo que has tejido, hacer regalos maravillosos a la gente que conoces, y diseñar tus propias prendas con muy poco esfuerzo. ¡Y la lana da mucho gustito!
Desde luego, en aquella época, hace ya más de diez años, las tejedoras no tenían tanta exposición como ahora, así que era muy complicado llegar a ello si no tenías una referencia familiar. Hoy en día sin embargo creo que es mucho más fácil, porque tejer está de moda. Pero yo encontré mi grupito de tejedoras y los fines de semana me hacía dos horas de ida en tren para poder tejer con otras chicas que hacían lo mismo. La verdad es que si no hubiera acudido a estas quedadas, nada sería lo mismo.

What are you looking for or what stimulates you at the time of creating or knitting a pattern? 
What I like the most is is designing clothes that I can wear daily, for any occasion. They have to be simple but also having “something” that makes them different. I find a lot of inspiration in nature, sometimes observing textures in the natural world; other times I pay attention to the colours... but all my knitting patterns are inspired in some place, a landscape and what I lived there, the sensations I had.

¿Qué buscas o qué te incita a la hora de crear o tejer un patrón? 
Lo que más me gusta es diseñar prendas que se puedan usar a diario, en cualquier ocasión. Que sean sencillas pero tengan “algo” que las haga diferentes. Y me inspiro mucho en la naturaleza, a veces observando las texturas del mundo natural, otras veces me fijo en los colores… pero todos mis patrones de punto están inspirados en un lugar, un paisaje y las cosas que viví en esos sitios, las sensaciones que tuve.

If you were an amigurumi, what would you be? 
That's so difficult! The question is: is there any amigurumi that you would not like to be? Without a doubt I would be something like Misio, very cute but also a bit of a fidget-bottom, hahaha.

Si fueras un amigurumi, ¿qué serías? 
¡Qué difícil! La pregunta es: ¿hay algún amigurumi que no quisiera ser? Sin duda, sería un personaje como Misio, muy mono, pero un poco culo inquieto, jajaja.

During this last year, we could say that minimalism rules your life; does it also rule your stash? Do you have any special organizing method for your yarns and projects? 
You got me there, my stash is a mess at the moment! I have several yarn balls that I have to use and I hope to finish putting some order in the stash this year. I think having a list of all the yarn balls that you have is fundamental to have some control. And most of all, not to buy just because, like one yarn ball here, another there... that was my rookie mistake and look, there are still some of those yarn balls around my place.

Este último año el minimalismo podríamos decir que reina en tu vida, ¿También en tu stash? ¿Tienes algún método de organización especial para tus lanas y tus proyectos?
Ahí me has pillado, ¡mi stash es un desastre ahora mismo! Tengo varios ovillos a los que he de dar salida, y espero terminar de poner orden en el alijo este año. Creo que tener una lista de todos los ovillos que una tiene es fundamental para llevar un control. Y sobre todo, no comprar por comprar, en plan un ovillo de aquí, otro de allá… Ese fue mi error de principiante y mira, todavía hay ovillos de esos dando vueltas por casa.

The online school, organizing KALs/CALs, working as a freelance for others or opening an online shop have been some of your latest projects. Which are your plans for 2016? Any confesable news?
More than new projects, this year I want to consolidate the online shop, that is my most important project at the moment. It's been open for only a month and a half, I am adapting to the rhythm of preparing orders, maintaining the stock, uploading news, etc. What's funny is that the online shop has no knitted products as one might expect and I would like to add them in a short future. A knitted mini collection?
Afterwards I have a couple of patterns that I'd like to publish, but I don't have enough time! In addition I am a perfectionist and I think about things before launching, I mean, that I do not start a project just because. 
BUT it may happen that I get involved in another adventure, haha, I do not learn. This year, if everything works fine, I will make a collection of amigurumi kits in collaboration with another blog/online shop :D

La escuela on-line, organizar KALS/CALs, trabajar de freelance para otros o abrir una tienda online han sido algunos de tus últimos proyectos ¿Cuáles tienes en mente para el 2016? ¿Alguna novedad confesable? 
Más que nuevos proyectos, este año quiero consolidar la tienda online, que por ahora es el proyecto más importante. Sólo lleva un mes y medio abierta, me estoy adaptando al ritmo que supone preparar pedidos, mantener el stock, subir novedades, etc. Lo curioso es que la tienda online no tiene productos tejidos como cabría esperar, y me gustaría en un futuro no muy lejano incorporarlos. ¿Una mini colección de punto?
Y luego tengo un par de patrones que quiero publicar, ¡pero es que me falta tiempo!. Además soy muy perfeccionista y me pienso mucho las cosas antes de lanzarme, vamos, que no empiezo proyectos porque sí.
PERO puede ser que me haya embarcado en otra aventura, jajaja, si es que no aprendo. Este año si todo va bien haré una colección de kits de amigurumi en colaboración con otro blog/tienda online :D

I have a scientist soul and what I like the most about crochet and amigurumis is its mathematical side. I like counting the stitches quietly even if I am using a stitch marker and softly touching every round to feel the increases and decreases.

I can even unravel an almost finished piece if I am not convinced and I have a basket full of unfinished projects because when I feel overwhelmed I just crochet without any sense or I start 3 or 4 things at a time.
I like sinking my fingers on the thread, as Amelie did with the lentils, and smelling the yarn balls before buying them. I use to crochet with bigger yarn than the recommended because I tend to crochet too tight.
I do not crochet when I am angry or sad and I always carry a ball of yarn, a hook and scissors in my purse. Sometimes I even think that everything I touch, I make it dull.

Tengo alma científica y lo que más me gusta del ganchillo y de los amigurumis es su lado matemático. Me gusta contar los puntos, en voz baja, aunque ponga marcador, y tocar suavemente con los dedos las vueltas y notar los aumentos y las disminuciones. Puedo deshacer una labor casi terminada si no me convence y tengo un cesto lleno de proyectos a medias porque cuando me agobio o me saturo tejo sin sentido y empiezo 3-4 cosas a la vez.
Me gusta hundir los dedos en la lana, cual Amelie en las lentejas, y oler los ovillos antes de comprarlos. Suelo tejer con medio número más del recomendado porque aprieto muchísimo, como si me fuera la vida en ello. Nunca tejo enfadada ni triste y siempre llevo un ovillo, un ganchillo y unas tijeras en el bolso.
A veces pienso que todo lo que toco lo hago ñoño.

Do you remember what your first contact with crochet was? Who taught you? What led you to crochet? And which was your first 3D creation?
My granny Consuelo was the one who taught me how to crochet when I was little. I learnt the basic stitches and to crochet several kinds of granny squares but I did not make it further. In fact, it did not really catch my attention until my little girls were born and I discovered the amigurumis.
Being able to make them my own little toys opened a universe to me, where creativity and imagination could fly free.

My first amigurumi was a teddy bear, quite ugly by the way, but it became my first pattern.

Recuerdas cuál fue tu primer contacto con el ganchillo? Quién te enseñó? Qué te llevó a aprender a hacer ganchillo? Y cuál ha sido tu primera creación en 3D?
Mi abuela Consuelo fue quien me enseñó a hacer ganchillo cuando yo era pequeña. Aprendí los puntos básicos y a tejer varios modelos de granny squares, pero no pasé mucho más de ahí. En realidad, no me llamó la atención de verdad hasta que nacieron mis niñas y descubrí los amigurumis.
Poder tejerles mis propios muñequitos me abrió un universo en el que la creatividad y la imaginación podían volar libres.
Mi primer amigurumi fue un osito, bastante feo por cierto, pero que supuso mi primer patrón.

While you are crocheting, what else do you do? Do you watch any TV series or film?
What I like the most is listening to music while I crochet. When I work on a new creation I use to listen to Agnes Obel, Bon Iver o Passenger; they help me to imagine and to enjoy the process. If the weather allows it, I like to go out to the terrace; then I just listen to the sound of the birds and enjoy my tea. I don’t know how to crochet without a warm cup of tea by my side, even in the summer!

Mientras haces ganchillo, qué haces? Escuchas música? Ves alguna serie o película?
Lo que más me gusta cuando tejo es escuchar música. Cuando ando con una nueva creación suele sonar Agnes Obel, Bon Iver o Passenger, me ayudan a imaginar y a disfrutar del proceso. Si el tiempo lo permite me gusta salir a tejer en la terraza, entonces sólo escucho el sonido de los pájaros y saboreo mi té. No sé tejer sin una taza de té calentito al lado ¡Incluso en verano!

How many hours do you have per week to create and crochet? Are you able to make a living of it? Or do you combine it with another job?
For me, crocheting crossed the line of being a hobby a while ago and became my work. Not only with Gallimelmas e Imaginancias, which takes the most of my time, but also as a crochet and knit patterns freelance designer.
I usually spend around 6-7 hours daily but unfortunately not everything is knitting/crocheting. What takes the most of the time is all the after work: updating the shop, answering e-mails and messages, social network, laying out patterns, packing, accounting, markets…
Making a living of it is complicated but the excitement is there and I strongly hang onto it.

De cuántas horas a la semana dispones para crear y hacer ganchillo? Consigues vivir de ello? O lo compaginas con otro trabajo?
Para mí hacer ganchillo hace tiempo que pasó el umbral de hobby y se transformó en mi trabajo. No sólo con Gallimelmas e Imaginancias que es lo que más me ocupa el tiempo, sino también como diseñadora freelance de patrones de ganchillo y punto.
Suelo dedicarle entre 6-7 horas al día, aunque por desgracia no todo es tejer. Lo que más horas se lleva es todo el trabajo de después: actualizar tienda, contestar correos y mensajes, redes sociales, maquetar patrones, empaquetar, contabilidad, mercadillos…
Vivir de ello es complicado, pero la ilusión está ahí y yo me aferro muy fuerte a ella.

If you could have all the time in the world to create and to crochet, what would you create? Is there anything in your mind that you would love to do but you are not able to just as a matter of time?
I never run out of projects; sketching books are usually full of things to do and ideas to carry through. Without a doubt there are many things I would do if I had more time…
If I could knit or crochet whatever I wanted it would most likely be something very different to what I usually do. Something that mixes textures, materials and nature.

Si pudieras disponer de todo el tiempo del mundo para crear y hacer ganchillo, qué crearías? Hay algo que tengas en mente que te encantaría hacer pero por tiempo no puedes?
Proyectos nunca me faltan, las libretas de bocetos suelen estar a rebosar de cosas por tejer y de ideas que llevar a cabo. Sin duda hay muchas cosas que haría si tuviera más tiempo…
Si pudiera tejer lo que quisiera seguramente sería algo muy diferente a lo que suelo hacer. Algo que mezclase aún más las texturas, los materiales y la naturaleza.

When you start creating and imagining, is there any process that annoys you or that you dislike?
Imagining for others or on demand. When I have to create something preconceived by someone else it’s a bit difficult at the beginning. It is quite complicated being in somebody else’s shoes making something as he/she would like it. 
I use to make a fuss and complain a lot until I make it to combine my style with the order’s requirements: P

Cuando te pones a crear e imaginar, hay algún proceso que te saque de quicio o que te guste menos?
Imaginar para otros o por encargo. Cuando tengo que crear algo ya preconcebido por otro me cuesta al principio. Tener que ponerme en su lugar, en sus pensamientos y hacer algo a gusto de otra persona pero que no deje de ser algo tuyo es bastante complicado.
Hasta que consigo aunar mi estilo con lo que el encargo requiere suelo patalear y quejarme mucho :P
