Crochatting: Wasel Wasel entrevista a... le petit paquebot!

Several decorative products work together in Le Petit Paquebot such as clothes or toys, having as a common element the use of traditional techniques like crochet, weaving, loom and embroidery.

The brand most identifying element is amigurumi. They started years ago making daily life objects such as telephones, record players or food amongst others, when people did not even know how to pronounce the word “amigurumi” yet. Afterwards they developed two brands: “One by Hand”, with unique handmade clothes made by order, and “Bruno y Julieta” for toys and articles for babies.

En Le Petit Paquebot trabajan varios productos decorativos, prendas de vestir, juguetes, cuyo elemento común es la utilización de técnica de tejido artesanal como ganchillo, macramé, telar y bordado. El elemento más identificativo de la marca es el amigurumi, empezaron haciendo objetos de la vida diaria como teléfonos, tocadiscos, comida, entre otras cosas cuando la gente aún no sabía pronunciar la palabra amigurumi años ha. Posteriormente desarrollaron dos marcas: "One by Hand" de prendas de ropa únicas hechas por encargo y a mano y otra de juguetes y artículos para bebés "Bruno y Julieta".

Which was your first project? Was it crocheted or was it something different? And most importantly, how did it look? Was that what got you addicted or that happened later on?
My first project with le petit paquebot was a dreadful doll, teletubbie shaped and looking like a bowling pin. I still keep it fondly, but I have to admit that even if I knew how to crochet I was only starting to make amigurumis and I was a real newbie! I believe the most important thing is getting started with whatever you feel like and improving bit by bit, finding your own identity and style. What got me addicted was, specifically regarding amigurumi, being able to make any kind of object out of traditional work such as telephones, record players or food. I thought it was cool.

¿Cuál fue el primer proyecto que hiciste? ¿Fue de ganchillo o no tenía nada que ver? Y lo más importante, ¿cómo quedó? ¿Fue lo que te enganchó o eso pasó después?
Mi primer proyecto con le petit paquebot fue una muñeca horrorosa, con forma de teletubby y apariencia de bolo, aún la conservo y le tengo mucho cariño, pero debo reconocer que aunque sabía hacer ganchillo estaba empezando a hacer amigurumis y estaba bastante pez! Creo que lo importante es empezar haciendo lo que te apetece e ir mejorando poco a poco, encontrar tu propia identidad y estilo. Lo que me enganchó fue, concretamente con el amigurumi, poder hacer todo tipo de objetos que se salieran de la labor tradicional, como teléfonos, tocadiscos, comida. Me parecía la bomba.

What do you have inside your crafts bag? In detail
I have sort of a big case and I always carry my hamanaka needles which are 5 doubles and I have all the numbers. I can do nothing without them. I also have a couple of scissors, knitting and sewing needles, white and black thread, stitch markers, a measure tape and a little taboret.

¿Qué llevas en tu bolsa de labores? Detalladamente.

Tengo una estuche mas o menos grandecito, y siempre llevo mis agujas hamanaka, son 5, dobles y tengo todos los números, no puedo hacer nada sin ellas. También un par de tijeras, agujas laneras y agujas normales, hilo negro y blanco, marcadores, un metro y un bastidor pequeñito.

Tell us about “onebyhand”. How did you think about this way of making your clothes collection? How are the hands behind it?

Onebyhand is the most ambitious project from le petit paquebot. I am not a designer but a graduated in law and everything I do, I do it as a hobby. Making clothes is very difficult; you need to know a lot about fabric types, pattern designing, colour combination, needlework. It was a challenge and I had a lot of help. A good friend of mine who is a designer, Laura Soto, helped me to get started and with her we defined the way to work to allow me to face the creation of clothes in a sustainable way for me, my project and my possibilities.
I could not take over the creation of a big collection, either because of the time nor because of creative capacity, so I decided to make clothes one by one, that's why it's called one by hand.
Another challenge was making clothes that were not the “typical” crocheted ones so I decided to combine crochet with fabric. Shirts were the perfect choice.
Finally I also wanted to make the production process as something totally personalized and local. I come up with the garment and I have a wonderful pattern maker, Agustina from Hilada Pensada, who makes it happen. Afterwards I make the crocheted parts, buy the fabric and the buttons for the production of every individual shirt and Katy, who is a wonderful dressmaker, makes it. Everything is done in Madrid.

Háblanos de "onebyhand". ¿Cómo se te ocurrió hacer de esta manera tu colección de prendas? ¿Quiénes son las manos que hay detrás? 

Onebyhand es el proyecto más ambicioso de le petit paquebot. Yo no soy diseñadora, soy licenciada en derecho y todo lo que hago es por afición. Hacer ropa es dificilísimo, tienes que saber mucho, de tipos de tejido, de patronaje, de combinación de colores, de costura. Fue un reto y tuve mucha ayuda, Una buena amiga diseñadora me asesoró para empezar, Laura Soto y con ella definimos la forma de trabajar para que yo pudiera hacer frente a la creación de prendas de forma sostenible para mi, mi proyecto y mis posibilidades. No podría asumir la creación de una gran colección, ni por tiempo, ni por capacidad creativa y decidí hacer prendas de una en una, por eso se llama onebyhand. Otro reto fue hacer prendas que no fueran las "tipicas" de ganchillo y por eso decidí combinar ganchillo con tejido, las camisas fueron la elección perfecta. Y por último también quería que el proceso de producción fuera completamente personalizado y local. Yo concibo la prenda y cuento con una maravillosa patronista, Agustina de Hilada Pensada, que la materializa, después tejo las partes de ganchillo, compro la tela para la producción de cada camisa de forma individual y los botones y Katy, que es una costurera maravillosa, la confecciona. Todo lo hacemos en Madrid.

Where do you find the inspiration and the ideas for your projects? How is the process from the moment when you have the idea until it becomes real?
Specifically with amigurumi, I think it is much easier to make things that surround me. It is a creative project which is related to the real world. I am not used to work with fantastic or invented objectives.
I usually look at old drawings, pictures or old crafts magazines. I like working with themes or families, for example I think about forest animals, fast food, veggies or electrical appliances. From there I take out series of what I like the most, making projects with other techniques like embroidery. Most likely I try to be based on pictures... the more realistic the better. I don´t use patterns very often and I really find it hard to write my own ones. As my friend Vane says, I make it with feelings.

¿Dónde encuentras la inspiración y las ideas para tus proyectos? ¿Cómo es el proceso desde que tienes esa idea hasta que se convierte en algo real? 

En concreto con el amigurumi, creo que me resulta mucho más fácil hacer cosas que me rodean, es un proceso creativo relacionado con el mundo real, no suelo trabajar con objetivos inventados, o fantásticos. Suelo mirar dibujos antiguos, fotos, o revistas de labores antiguas. Me gusta trabajar sobre temáticas o familias, por ejemplo pienso animales del bosque, comida rápida, verduras, electrodomésticos. De ahí saco series de las cosas que más me gustan. Con proyectos con otras técnicas, como bordado. Intento basarme en fotos casi siempre... Cuanto más realista mejor. En pocas ocasiones utilizo patrones y me cuesta horrores escribir los míos propios. Como dice mi amiga Vane: Lo tejo a sentimiento.

Confess any of your secret manias. Or many, hihihi.
I think my worst mania is that I like sewing alone. When I am making things for le petit paquebot, I need to be calm and focused in what I am doing. Workshops are another story of course, but I really enjoy the moment of being concentrated while embroidering at home.

Confiesa alguna de tus manías más secretas. O varias, jijiji. 

Creo que la peor manía es que me gusta tejer sola. Cuando estoy haciendo cosas para le petit paquebot necesito estar tranquila y concentrada en lo que estoy haciendo. Los talleres son otra cosa, claro, pero realmente disfruto el momento de concentración de tejer en casa tranquila.

Some time ago, you spoke about your beginnings in your blog and something that really surprised me about how you started knitting is that nobody knits or crochets in your family, but nevertheless you found this path. Do you think it is more difficult to find out about it for those who did not have it at home with their mother o grannies? Or, on the other hand, is knitting an easy-to-choose option reachable for anybody with curiosity?
I actually don't know how did I get my wires crossed that way to decide I wanted to learn how to knit, hahaha. I was surely looking to do something creative, and I could have chosen something else like painting, for example (what I´ve also done when I was younger), but knitting has something special that no other hobby has: you can wear what you've knitted, making wonderful presents for the people you know and designing your own clothes putting a little effort. And wool feels so pleasant! 
Of course in that time, more than ten years ago already, knitters were not so known as they are now, so it was very complicated to reach it without any family reference. Nowadays, however, I believe it is much easier, because knitting is on fashion. But I found my little group of knitters and on the weekends I used to go two hours by train to be able to knit with other girls who were doing the same. In fairness, if I had not gone to these meetings, nothing would be the same.

En tu blog contaste hace tiempo cómo fueron tus inicios y algo que me sorprendió mucho de cómo empezaste a tejer es que nadie de tu familia hace punto o ganchillo y aun así tú encontraste este camino. ¿Crees que más difícil dar con él para la gente que no lo ha vivido en casa con su madre o con sus abuelas? ¿O por el contrario, tejer es una opción sencilla de elegir al alcance de cualquiera con inquietudes?
La verdad es que no sé cómo se me cruzaron los cables de esa manera, para decidir que quería aprender a tejer, jajaja. Seguramente lo que buscaba era hacer algo creativo, y podría haber escogido otra cosa, como por ejemplo pintar (que es algo que también he hecho varios años cuando era jovencita), pero tejer tiene algo especial que otras aficiones no tienen: puedes llevar lo que has tejido, hacer regalos maravillosos a la gente que conoces, y diseñar tus propias prendas con muy poco esfuerzo. ¡Y la lana da mucho gustito!
Desde luego, en aquella época, hace ya más de diez años, las tejedoras no tenían tanta exposición como ahora, así que era muy complicado llegar a ello si no tenías una referencia familiar. Hoy en día sin embargo creo que es mucho más fácil, porque tejer está de moda. Pero yo encontré mi grupito de tejedoras y los fines de semana me hacía dos horas de ida en tren para poder tejer con otras chicas que hacían lo mismo. La verdad es que si no hubiera acudido a estas quedadas, nada sería lo mismo.

What are you looking for or what stimulates you at the time of creating or knitting a pattern? 
What I like the most is is designing clothes that I can wear daily, for any occasion. They have to be simple but also having “something” that makes them different. I find a lot of inspiration in nature, sometimes observing textures in the natural world; other times I pay attention to the colours... but all my knitting patterns are inspired in some place, a landscape and what I lived there, the sensations I had.

¿Qué buscas o qué te incita a la hora de crear o tejer un patrón? 
Lo que más me gusta es diseñar prendas que se puedan usar a diario, en cualquier ocasión. Que sean sencillas pero tengan “algo” que las haga diferentes. Y me inspiro mucho en la naturaleza, a veces observando las texturas del mundo natural, otras veces me fijo en los colores… pero todos mis patrones de punto están inspirados en un lugar, un paisaje y las cosas que viví en esos sitios, las sensaciones que tuve.

If you were an amigurumi, what would you be? 
That's so difficult! The question is: is there any amigurumi that you would not like to be? Without a doubt I would be something like Misio, very cute but also a bit of a fidget-bottom, hahaha.

Si fueras un amigurumi, ¿qué serías? 
¡Qué difícil! La pregunta es: ¿hay algún amigurumi que no quisiera ser? Sin duda, sería un personaje como Misio, muy mono, pero un poco culo inquieto, jajaja.

During this last year, we could say that minimalism rules your life; does it also rule your stash? Do you have any special organizing method for your yarns and projects? 
You got me there, my stash is a mess at the moment! I have several yarn balls that I have to use and I hope to finish putting some order in the stash this year. I think having a list of all the yarn balls that you have is fundamental to have some control. And most of all, not to buy just because, like one yarn ball here, another there... that was my rookie mistake and look, there are still some of those yarn balls around my place.

Este último año el minimalismo podríamos decir que reina en tu vida, ¿También en tu stash? ¿Tienes algún método de organización especial para tus lanas y tus proyectos?
Ahí me has pillado, ¡mi stash es un desastre ahora mismo! Tengo varios ovillos a los que he de dar salida, y espero terminar de poner orden en el alijo este año. Creo que tener una lista de todos los ovillos que una tiene es fundamental para llevar un control. Y sobre todo, no comprar por comprar, en plan un ovillo de aquí, otro de allá… Ese fue mi error de principiante y mira, todavía hay ovillos de esos dando vueltas por casa.

The online school, organizing KALs/CALs, working as a freelance for others or opening an online shop have been some of your latest projects. Which are your plans for 2016? Any confesable news?
More than new projects, this year I want to consolidate the online shop, that is my most important project at the moment. It's been open for only a month and a half, I am adapting to the rhythm of preparing orders, maintaining the stock, uploading news, etc. What's funny is that the online shop has no knitted products as one might expect and I would like to add them in a short future. A knitted mini collection?
Afterwards I have a couple of patterns that I'd like to publish, but I don't have enough time! In addition I am a perfectionist and I think about things before launching, I mean, that I do not start a project just because. 
BUT it may happen that I get involved in another adventure, haha, I do not learn. This year, if everything works fine, I will make a collection of amigurumi kits in collaboration with another blog/online shop :D

La escuela on-line, organizar KALS/CALs, trabajar de freelance para otros o abrir una tienda online han sido algunos de tus últimos proyectos ¿Cuáles tienes en mente para el 2016? ¿Alguna novedad confesable? 
Más que nuevos proyectos, este año quiero consolidar la tienda online, que por ahora es el proyecto más importante. Sólo lleva un mes y medio abierta, me estoy adaptando al ritmo que supone preparar pedidos, mantener el stock, subir novedades, etc. Lo curioso es que la tienda online no tiene productos tejidos como cabría esperar, y me gustaría en un futuro no muy lejano incorporarlos. ¿Una mini colección de punto?
Y luego tengo un par de patrones que quiero publicar, ¡pero es que me falta tiempo!. Además soy muy perfeccionista y me pienso mucho las cosas antes de lanzarme, vamos, que no empiezo proyectos porque sí.
PERO puede ser que me haya embarcado en otra aventura, jajaja, si es que no aprendo. Este año si todo va bien haré una colección de kits de amigurumi en colaboración con otro blog/tienda online :D
