Crochatting: Paseando Hilos entrevista a... Lanusa!

“Lanusa” is something big for me as it is the biggest change I made in my life two years ago and what has taught me the most, not only to realize about what I like but also not to be okay with what most people does, looking for my place and for myself.

Lanusa are many things but right now embroidery is what defines it the most. I work 8 hours as an embroiderer, I give embroidery lessons and I never get tired of picturing new embroidered figures…

"Lanusa" es algo muy grande para mí, ya que es el cambio más grande que di hace dos años en mi vida y que más cosas me ha enseñado. No sólo a darme cuenta de lo que me gusta, sino a no conformarme con lo que la mayoría de la sociedad hace, y buscar mi sitio y mi yo.
Lanusa son muchas cosas, pero ahora mismo lo que más lo define es el bordado. Trabajo 8 horas de bordadora, doy clases de bordado y no me canso de imaginarme bordados nuevos...

What is your first memory holding a needle and surrounded by yarn?
When I was little together with my mum and my granny, making dresses for my barbie dolls. Afterwards in school we had a class on Fridays called “workshop” and every quarter we were able to choose different subjects; I learnt how to crochet and embroider there.

¿Cuál es el primer recuerdo que tienes con una aguja en la mano y rodeada de hilos?
De pequeña, con mi madre y mi abuela, haciéndoles vestidos a las barbies. Luego, en el cole, los viernes teníamos una asignatura que se llamaba "taller" y cada trimestre podías elegir temas distintos, y allí aprendí tanto a hacer ganchillo como a bordar.

As a creative I guess you use some resources or follow some rituals during your working process. Can you tell us about them? I don’t mean revealing them but just tell us about anecdotes like charms, the music you listen to or the best time to embroider during the day.
I actually don’t have any secret, ritual or whatsoever. What I can say is how much I enjoy when I have time and I do things with calm; I never have time so when I do, it’s a big present. Calm makes things flow and come up naturally.
Something else that I consider really important is the light; it doesn’t matter how the place is but it has to be bright. That gives a lot of energy at the time of working.

Como creadora supongo que tendrás algunos recursos o rituales para tu proceso de trabajo. ¿Nos puedes contar un poquito de ellos? Nada de desvelar tus misterios, tan solo anécdotas como objetos fetiche, música que escuchas o la mejor hora del día para bordar.
Pues no tengo ni secretos ni rituales ni nada parecido, sí que puedo decir que no tiene nada que ver lo que disfruto cuando tengo tiempo y hago las cosas con calma, soy la mujer sin tiempo, así que cuando lo tengo es un regalo muy grande. La calma hace que la cosas fluyan y salgan con naturalidad.
Otra cosa que considero importantísima es la luz, no importa cómo sea el espacio, pero que entre mucha luz, se trabaja con muchísima energía.

Lanusa is two people, two sisters. Is it complicated to work with someone as close as a sister? How do you distribute work? I have two sisters and I don’t know if I could work with them without our personal life coming between us now and then…
I actually don’t even know now what Lanusa is, hihihi. It is true that it started together with my sister. Even if I’ve always been the biggest percentage, she has always helped me with anything I’ve asked her for.
My sister is very creative. Sometimes I feel like she does not realize about her potential and it really makes my blood boil, reason why I’ve always tried that she contributes to Lanusa.
Right now Lanusa is a bit on hold. I left my job (IT) to make a living out of something that I liked more and I am discovering that embroidery is the thing.
I collaborate with other brands designing and producing embroidery for them and for one year already, I work full time for a brand, embroidering with gemstones and new techniques for me. I also give embroidery lessons in a beautiful shop in Madrid, Contigo allá fine del mondo, and that’s why I do not have time to do a lot with Lanusa.

Lanusa sois dos personas, dos hermanas. ¿Es complicado trabajar con alguien tan cercano como una hermana? ¿Cómo os repartís el trabajo? Yo tengo dos hermanas y no sé si podría trabajar con ellas sin que lo persona rozase angina vez...
Lanusa ahora mismo no sé muy bien ni lo que es, Jijiji. Es verdad que empezamos mi hermana y yo, aunque siempre he sido yo el porcentaje más grande, ella siempre me ha ayudado en lo que le he pedido.
Mi hermana es muy creativa, a veces me da la sensación que ella no se da cuenta del potencial que tiene y me da mucha rabia, y por eso siempre he intentado que aporte cosas a lanusa.
Ahora mismo lanusa está algo parado, yo dejé mi trabajo (era informática) para vivir de algo que me gustara más y estoy descubriendo que eso es el bordado.
Colaboro con otras marcas diseñandoles y produciéndoles bordados y desde hace un año trabajo toda la jornada para una marca bordando con pedrería y técnicas nuevas para mí, también doy clases de bordado en una tienda preciosa de Madrid, Contigo alla fine del mondo, y por eso no tengo tiempo para hacer mucho con lanusa.

Let’s talk about dreams… where do you see Lanusa within 10 years from now?
I don’t know and I don’t really care about it. At this time of my life Lanusa is not just my brand but my lifestyle, the way of discovering what I enjoy the most and to be able to make a living out of it. The fact that my passion, embroidery, becomes my work, discovering something new every day, learning and enjoying.

Hablemos de sueño... ¿Dónde ves a Lanusa dentro de 10 años?
No lo sé, y es algo que no me importa, en este punto de mi vida lanusa más que mi marca es mi forma de vida, la forma de descubrir que es lo que más me hace disfrutar de la vida, y poder vivir de ello. Que mi pasión, el bordado, se convierta en mi trabajo, descubrir algo nuevo cada día, aprender y disfrutar.

To conclude, tell us about an infallible trick to do something, one of those that’s essential to know and that never fails you. It doesn’t have to be about embroidery but more about some contribution to the improvement of humanity. I have a foolproof trick to make perfect fried eggs: very hot oil in a very little pan, putting the egg in at room temperature.
When you embroider on a surface where it’s not easy to put the needle through and it slips up when you try to pull it, use latex gloves or if it feels uncomfortable, just cut the part for the fingers that you are using in the glove and put it in your finger when pulling; no surface will resist that!

Y para terminar, cuéntanos un truco infalible para hacer algo, uno de esos que es imprescindibles saber y que a ti nunca te fallan. No tiene por que ser de bordado, es más bien una aportación a la mejora de la humanidad. Yo tengo uno infalible para hacer la puntilla perfecta en los huevos fritos, y es poner el aceite muy caliente en una sartén muy pequeña y echar el huevo a temperatura ambiente.
Cuando bordas en una superficie en la que te cueste pasar la aguja y esta se te resbala al intentar tirar de ella, usa unos guantes de látex, o si te resulta incómodo corta la parte de los dedos que uses del guante y ponlo en tus dedos al tirar, así no habrá superficie que se te resista!

Crochatting: Actante Dourada entrevista a... Paseando Hilos!

My name is Clara Montagut and my personal blog is Paseando Hilos. I am officially a graphic designer but I don’t believe that fully defines me. I am also an artist, teacher, mother, knitter, writer and cook. I learnt to create with my hands when I was little and that gave me years later a wider view on my profession. 

Knitting is my passion, educating my motivation and sharing is my tool.

Mi nombre es Clara Montagut y mi blog personal es Paseando Hilos. Mi profesión oficial es la de diseñadora gráfica, pero no creo que me defina del todo. También soy artista, maestra, madre, tejedora, escritora y cocinera. Aprendí a usar las manos para crear cuando era muy pequeña y esto me dio una visión mas amplia de mi profesión años después. Mi pasión es tejer, mi motivación es educar y mi herramienta es compartir.

How did you start in the crochet/textile design world?
I learnt with my granny when I was little. She taught me to love something made by hand. When I was 11 I knitted my first purse and when I was 13 I made a jumper that would still be too big for me! So big it is! Since then I never stopped knitting and I hope I will never do.

¿ Cómo te iniciaste en el mundo del ganchillo/ diseño textil?
Aprender, aprendí de pequeña, con mi abuela. Ella me enseñó el amor por crear algo con las manos. Con 11 años me tejí mi primer bolso ¡y con 13 un jersey que aun me quedaría grande de lo gigante que es! Y ya nunca dejé de tejer, y espero no hacerlo nunca.

What’s your most rewarding knitting project or the one you are most proud of?
I would not be able to choose only one but those that bring me the nicest memories and the most learning are the collaborations. From the first Campaign for the Wool to the social knitting.

¿ Cual es el proyecto lanero que más te ha reportado o del que más orgullosa estás?
No sabría elegir uno, pero de los que guardo mejores recuerdos y de los que guardo mas aprendizajes son los colaborativos. Desde la primera Campaña por la Lana hasta el tejido social.

In your experience so far, is it possible to make a living from art/textile design in Spain?
It is possible to make a living from it with a lot of work underneath, being talented and having plenty of patience. Please note that I am not meaning living in luxury but having a humble life. Nobody will become rich knitting, let’s say.

Según tu experiencia, ¿ Es posible en España vivir exclusivamente del arte/diseño textil?
Es posible vivir, pero con mucho trabajo detrás, mucho talento y mucha paciencia. Y no creas que me refiero a vivir a todo tren, creo más bien vivir modestamente. No se cae nadie que te vas a hacer rico tejiendo, entendámonos.

What does crochet mean to you? What does it give you compared to other techniques?
Crochet was the first technique I learnt together with weaving. The advantage of this technique is designing on a trial-and-error basis, making and unraveling. It does not require as much planning as knitting or sewing do and depending on the manual dexterity, it goes faster. I try to learn many new techniques and I believe every project requires its own technique but I do reckon that crochet is an almost perfect resource.

¿Qué significa para ti, qué te aporta el ganchillo frente a otras técnicas de diseño?
El ganchillo fue la primera técnica que aprendí, junto al macramé. Le veo la ventaja de lo flexible que es diseñar con esta técnica, es ensayo y error, hacer y deshacer. requiere menos planificación que el punto o la costura y dependiendo de la destreza es más rápido. Yo que intento aprender nuevas técnicas, creo que cada proyecto requiere su propia técnica, pero reconozco que el ganchillo es un recurso casi perfecto.

You have created Lana Connection  together with Juana Morales, a project specialized in conducting, “yarnbombing” actions in Spain amongst others. How was your experience?
Lana Connection  comes from the need of sharing hobbies and the love for wool, from a collaborative project. In fairness we started yarnbombing the streets as a form of expression and by means of replevin but the LC project has evolved pretty much during these 4 years. We planted the seed for many groups in Spain, we’ve given voice to many knitters/crocheters, we’ve told the society that knitting/crocheting is beautiful and therapeutical and we’ve supported the cause thanks to the power of wool in social media.
LC actions now aim more to dissemination and social action. We have become an informative and resource platform in a network that believes that a change is possible through a needle and a yarn ball.

Eres la creadora de Lana Connection junto a Juana Morales, un proyecto especializado en llevar a cabo entre otras,acciones de “Yarnbombing”en España. ¿ Cómo ha sido tu experiencia?
Lana Connection nace de la necesidad de compartir aficiones y amor por la lana, de un proyecto colaborativo. Es verdad que empezamos haciendo acciones laneras en la calle, como medio de expresión y reivindicación. Pero el proyecto de LC ha evolucionado mucho en estos 4 años. Fuimos el germen de mucho grupos laneros en España, hemos dado voz a tejedoras y tejedores, hemos contado a la sociedad que tejer es hermoso y terapéutico, y hemos dado apoyo a causas gracias al poder mediático de la lana.
Las acciones de LC ahora son más de divulgación y acción social. Nos hemos convertido en una plataforma de información y recursos, y en una red que cree que el cambio puede hacerse a través de una aguja y un ovillo.
