De Estraperlo on: Up&Up

Lucía Zapata is out of this world. She's from a world full of superheroes and pin-up girls, between the 40's and the 70's. You'll be lucky if you find her on your path. She travels around the world collecting unique places and people, and she stores them on all sort of projects, blogs and videos. Her last project, Up&Up brought her to Amsterdam and there we had the chance to meet each other.

Lucía Zapata es de otro mundo. Un mundo de superhéroes y pin ups, de algún momento entre los años 40 y 70. Es una fuera de serie de estas que de vez en cuando se cruza en tu camino, por suerte... Lucía viaja por el mundo coleccionando sitios y personas únicas y los almacena en proyectos, vídeos y blogs. Su último proyecto Up&Up la trajo a Amsterdam el pasado verano y ahí tuvimos la suerte de coincidir.



She doesn't see the same things that we see when we travel. While we see cathedrals, bridges and museums, she sees decadent amusement parks, abandoned industrial plants and all kind of locations that could perfectly belong to a superheroes movies from the 70's.

Ella no ve las mismas cosas que los demás en sus viajes. Mientras los demás vemos iglesias, puentes y museos, ella ve parques de atracciones en decadencia, naves industriales abandonadas y todo tipo de localizaciones dignas de una peli de superhéroes de los años 70.



This is my video. I spent the day so nervous and excited.... cleaning the house once and again. I hope you like it, every time I watch it I feel so embarrassed I think I could die, though... I can't help it...

"-ico"  is the suffix that people from Murcia add to transform nouns into diminutives. So, "bonico" would be the murcian way to say "bonito", cutie. When you say that something or someone is "bonico" you mean cute, pretty, nice... altogether. And this is the first thing you need to know about Murcia. Being bonico is a very very good thing.

En los años en los que me dediqué a "la vida de feriante y de farándula" en Cartagena, tanto con De Estraperlo como en El Mundo en una Caja de Cerillas, me pasaron muchas cosas buenas y bonitas y una de las mejores fue conocer a un montón de gente especial. Han sido muchas horas de ferias, mercadillos, talleres y blogs que, sin duda alguna, han tenido su recompensa.

Esta es mi colección de murcianicos a los que admiro, gente a la que me quiero parecer cuando sea mayor. Tienen algo nuevo que ofrecer y no conocen el NO por respuesta. Tienen un sueño, un sueño muy bonito que quieren compartir con nosotros y con ello hacer nuestras vidas un poquitín más felices.

Juan Diego is from another world. A world of finesse, fragility, fantasy and elegance. I can't sotp watching and admiring his works, his "cut papers". Paper Pan causes me greed, I want each and everyone of his works. Besides, he has this murcian English Lord air, with such class and style.

Lo de Juan Diego es de otro mundo. Un mundo de delicadeza, fantasía y elegancia. No puedo dejar de mirar y admirar sus trabajos. Sus "papeles recortados". Paper Pan me provoca mucha avaricia, quiero todas y cada una de sus obras. Y tiene un estilazo y una clase que pa qué, es un lord inglés murciano.

Le Petit Paquebot

Lidia is the master of masters, her hook is always one step ahead. Her works make me think that she crochets with her mind instead of her hands. She has the ability to mix simplicity and sophistication in a way that you cannot see where one begins and the other ends.

Lidia es la master de las masters. Son palabras mayores, su aguja siempre va un paso por delante. A veces cuando veo sus trabajos me da la sensación de que teje con la mente más que con las manos. Tiene la increíble capacidad de mezclar simplicidad con sofisticación de tal manera que no puedes ver dónde empieza una y termina la otra.

Ana is a whirlwind, a force of nature. She creates with her scissors, she doesen't get along with the stablishment, she turns things around. To Ana la peluquera art and hairdressing are the same thing, boundaries don't belong with her. Her purpose is to surprise you, and she achieves it again and again.

Mati es de dejarte con la boca abierta. Su trabajo es simplemente irresistible, y lo que siento al ir por la calle y ver uno de sus muros es gratitud, GRACIAS por hacer lo que haces. Eme es ternura callejera y en sus manos los objetos cotidianos cobran vida hasta el punto en que los quieres adoptar, a ellos y a ella.

Seems that Mati didn't have enough with her thousands of projects so, luckily for us, she's decided to give her creativity a home, along with Anita y Maria. Again bringing to life something aparently inert, filling it with iniciatives and artists and always with this afterwar neighborhood look that we love. Long live Chiribiri.

Parece que Mati no tenía suficiente con los mil proyectos que tenía siempre entre manos, por lo que, afortunadamente para nosotros, decidió darle un hogar a su creatividad, junto con Anita y Maria. De nuevo dando vida a algo aparentemente inerte, llenándolo de iniciativas y artistas  y siempre con ese aire de barrio de posguerra que nos chifla. Larga vida a Chiribiri.

No se vosotros pero yo me quedo tranquila sabiendo que la cosa está en tan buenas manos...

No están todos los que son, esto es sólo la punta del iceberg. Una pequeña representación de aquellos a los que he tenido el gusto y el placer de conocer. Seguro que tú conoces más y me encantará que me los presentes.

Crochet clothing

I've to admit that I've never been a big fan of crochet clothing  (except on the 70's when actually it was super cool...!), it always make me thing about this magazines with crochet patterns for summer that I used to buy before the internet existed. But then the internet came to save me and I discovered a new whole world full of nice and beautiful crochet clothes.

Tengo que reconocer que nunca he sido muy fan de la ropa de ganchillo. Siempre la he relacionado con esas revistas que me compraba para aprender a tejer antes de que existiese internet ("Sandra", "Sonia"...). La mayoría de los diseños se reducían a tops de encaje de colores planos y chillones de los que era difícil sacar algún partido, pero bueno, se hacía lo que se podía y he aprendido muchísimo con esas revistas... Después llegó internet, con él se acabaron las fronteras y la información se hizo infinita. Así empecé a descubrir que otro estilo de ropa de crochet es posible.

Todos los inviernos me pasa igual, me repaso ravelry de arriba abajo, soñando con todos los proyectos que voy a hacer, y luego..... con mucha suerte logro terminar uno de los de la lista.
