Circular granny

I'm sure you've heard about squaring the circle. Well, I guess that here we're talking about "circling the square"... Nothing more classic than a Granny Square, so why don't give it a new twist and make it... round! We'll have to come back to the four cornes later, though...

Si existe la cuadratura del círculo, aquí estaríamos hablando de la "circulatura" del cuadrado. No hay nada más clásico en el ganchillo que un Granny Square, así que, porqué no darle una vuelta de tuerca y hacerlo... redondo! Eso si, luego hay que volver a las cuatro esquinas, para que "todo cuadre". Nada, que me ha dado por la geometría hoy...

What I like with all this kind of granny-circles-squares is to mix and combine a lot of colours, normally one different each round. Tip: pay special attention to the one you're using in the centre and the last one since both of them use to get more attention.

A mi, en este tipo de aplicaciones, me gusta combinar muchos colores, hacer cada fila de un color. Puntos importantes a tener en cuenta en cuanto al color, son el que vas a poner en el centro y el último, que enmarcará la aplicación, ambos suelen tener más protagonismo.

Feeling folk and ethnic

This square today is sooo sooo crazy! It's actually more a stitch than a granny square. Again, it's a good example of how combining simple things you can get something quite sophisticated. At the end of the day, it's just some double and single crochet stitches, but who would say, right?

Esta aplicación de hoy es muy loca, muy loca. De nuevo es un claro ejemplo de cómo combinando cosas simples puedes conseguir algo la mar de sofisticado. Esto no son más que puntos altos, y algún punto bajo, pero quién lo diría, verdad?

The final look of this block confuses me a bit. I find hard to figure out what it reminds me of, but it's always something related to folklore and ethnic patterns. Depending on the colours you use: it may look more african or south american, for example if you use green, yellow, orange, black, and more bright colours, but with the colours that I've used it makes me think of nordic and slavic regional costumes. As I always say, try different combinations of colours, and see what they suggest you.

El resultado de esta aplicación me crea confusión. Intento penar a qué me recuerda y me cuesta encontrarlo, pero siempre es algo relacionado con folclore y estampados étnicos. Depende de los colores que uses puede tener aires africanos, por ejemplo; sin embargo con los colores que yo he usado me hace pensar en prendas y estampados más bien nórdicos, eslavos. Como siempre te digo, prueba distintas combinaciones de colores, a ver qué te sugieren a ti.

I found this stitch again in Jan Eaton's book "200 crochet blocks" and its's number 91. It comes to mind that this stitch wuld be perfect for a bigger project, a pillow for instance. Not made by squares but all the pillow with the same pattern, making a foundation chain as long as wide is the pillow. However, if you use it mixing it with other squares, as in this project, try to put it near plain squares, the less colours the better, because this one is quite overwhelmimg by itself.

Esta aplicación está sacada también del libro de Jan Eaton "200 Aplicaciones", ella la llama Terrazas y es el número 91. Se me ocurre que puede quedar muy bien para un proyecto entero, por ejemplo un cojín sólo con este punto, haciendo una cadeneta base tan grande como el almohadón. Sin embargo, si la usas como aplicación mezclada con otras de otro tipo, te recomiendo que lo hagas con algunas lisas, sin mucha mezcla de colores, ya que esta es ya muy intensa de por si.

With bubbles, success is guaranteed, and with colour bubbles you don't want to know... We're mad about bubbles. My students dream about them since the first day : "when are we going to make the bubbles, when?" But, oh dear, when the day finally comes, the story changes... "I can't make it, it looks smashed, mine are not as cute as yours..."

Las bolitas son siempre un éxito, y no os hablo ya de las de colores. Nos vuelven locas. Las alumnas, desde el primer día que las ven sueñan con ellas y preguntan cada día :"cuándo vamos a ver las bolitas?" Ah amiga, pero cuando llega el día de ver las bolitas la historia cambia por completo... que si no me sale, que si se me chafa, que si no quedan como las tuyas...

      

Actually it's, as always, a matter of practice. AND DON'T YOU CROCHET TIGHT!! Yes, I'm talking to you! Oh my god, how do you like to make it tight! This block is nothing but a few bubble stitches among single crochet stitches. I follow the distribution that Jan Eaton suggests in the book "200 crochet blocks", it's number 42, but of course you can make it your own way. You'll find a pattern of how to make the bubble stitch here.

En realidad es, como siempre, cuestión de práctica. Y NO APRIETES!!! Que os conozco y madre mía cómo os gusta apretar! Esta aplicación no es más que unas cuantas piñas distribuidas por una aplicación de punto bajo. Yo seguí el orden que propone Jan Eaton en el libro "200 labores de ganchillo", es la número 42 y ella la llama "Pompones alternados", pero también podéis inventar vosotras un orden e incluso hacer varias, cada una con un orden diferente a la otra. Electrocardiograma

This is definitely one of my favourite stitches ever. In any of its different versions. In this case we can see how it goes from deeper to higher and all over again (that's why we decided to call it ECG), but there are thousands of  combinations you can make, creating different effects. This is the spike stitch, you'll find a lot of tutorials in the internet, actually I also have one since I used it on my Blanket Project 2.0

Este es uno de mis puntos favoritos de ganchillo forever and ever. En cualquiera de sus versiones. En este caso vemos como va de más profundo a menos y vuelta a empezar (de ahí que decidiéramos llamarla electrocardiograma), pero hay miles de millones de combinaciones, proporcionando cada una un efecto distinto. El nombre que he encontrado a este tipo de punto en el que haces la lazada en filas por debajo de la que estás trabajando es "punto de pincho" o "spike stitch"  o "deep single crochet" en inglés. Encontrarás varios tutoriales en internet, incluso uno en mi blog ya que lo usé para una de las aplicaciones del Proyecto Colcha 2.0

But to make this block I used this tutorial that I found on the blog Crochet Spot, adapting it to the size of my grannies. It'll be good if you try to change the length of the stitches and the color combinations. This is a good stitch if you're planning to crochet a cover for your phone, ipad, etc... because it makes a very thick and resistant fabric.

Yo me basé en este tutorial del blog Crochet Spot, adaptándolo al tamaño de mis aplicaciones . Te recomiendo que hagas varias pruebas porque queda precioso. Varía la largura de los puntos para obtener diferentes resultados y las combinaciones de colores. Yo en este caso he usado sólo dos, pero tú puedes probar con más. Es un punto que queda muy tupido, funciona muy bien para proyectos tipo fundas de aparatos electrónicos, por ejemplo.

Ricardo? Yes, yes, Ricardo. The girls from Proyecto Colcha always wanted to know the names of the crochet blocks in order to have everything neatly written on their notebooks. The thing is that they don't always have names, or have very generic names, such as this one which is crochet flower square... So when they asked me about the name of this one I said the first name that came to my mind, Ricardo. And I like it this way better.

Ricardo? Si, si, Ricardo. Las chicas del Proyecto Colcha siempre querían saber el nombre de las aplicaciones para sus libretas de apuntes. Pero no siempre tienen nombres, o son nombres demasiado genéricos, como este que se llama cuadrado de flor de ganchillo... Así que cuando me preguntaron por el nombre de esta aplicación les dije el primero que se me pasó por la cabeza, Ricardo. A mi me gusta más así.

I'm not especially proud of the first one, I have to admit. I don't like the colour combination, I think is the pink row, that make my eyes hurt every time I look at it. (Let's be honest here, I told you I'll show you all of the blocks, not just the ones that I like... And everything is good to learn from) On the other hand, when you see it among all the grannies it looks nice. And this is a piece of Blanketadvice for you today: If you are not very happy with some of your crochet blocks, don't worry, they'll look beautiful when you put all together. If you're a perfectionist you can unravel it or whatever makes you happy, but bear in mind that we're talking about more than 200 grannies minimum... so it's not a big deal if you leak some of your ugly squares in your blanket.

No estoy precisamente orgullosa de la combinación empleada en la primera. (Vamos a ver, aquí sinceridad ante todo... y si os he dicho que os iba a enseñar todas las aplicaciones tienen que entrar las más bonitas y las más feas...). La fila esa que hice en rosa me rechina mucho y me rompe todo el cuadro. Pero en el conjunto de la colcha queda estupenda, como todas. Aprovecho para meter un Colchiconsejo, si alguna aplicación no os convence mucho, no os preocupéis, que al juntarlas todas quedan preciosas. Si eres muy perfeccionista deshazla o haz lo que sea para quedarte tranquila, pero estamos hablando de una colcha de más de 200 aplicaciones, así que no pasa nada por que levantes un poco la mano...

Díselo con flores

Let's start this adventure as it should be, with flowers! Flowers are a very recurrent resource for granny squares and crochet blankets. In some cases it can be more obvious but in other cases, such as this one, you'll only associate it with a flower if you use the right colours for that. In this version of the granny square it's very clear my intention since the colours are pink, green, brown and blue, that's to say, flower, leafs, earth and sky.

Empezamos nuestra aventura y además como debe ser, con flores. Las flores son un recurso muy recurrente en los granny squares, en algunos es más evidente y en otros, como en este caso, la asociación con una flor dependerá de los colores que uses. En esta veis claramente la intención al ser el centro de un tono rosado, la siguiente fila verde, después marrón y finalmente azul, es decir, flor, hojas, tierra y cielo.


As I told you in the THE BLANKET PROJECT, THE ORIGIN presentation, a lot of blocks I've used are from the book "200 crochet blocks" by Jan Eaton. This one is number 35.

It may look hard to make at first glimpse, but it isn't. Actually is very easy and quick to make since it's all doubles and triples.

Como os comenté en la presentación de PROYECTO COLCHA, EL ORIGEN, gran parte de las aplicaciones empleadas en esta colcha están sacadas del libro "200 labores de ganchillo para mantas, colchas y tapices" de Jan Eaton. Esta es una de ellas, en concreto la número 35, "Cuadro Tricolor".

A simple vista puede parecer complicado, pero en realidad es muy sencillo y rápido de tejer, ya que es casi todo a base de puntos altos dobles y triples.

En este caso hice 5. En principio mi idea era hacer sólo una de cada, pero en algunos casos hice hasta 5 debido a los diferentes turnos de alumnas. Si hacíamos la aplicación en clase y esta era fácil, acababa juntándome con 4 o 5. Eso sí, iguales pero diferentes.

Proyecto Colcha, el origen

Welcome to the origin of The Blanket Project. Probably you already know about this initiative and you may even have crocheted your own blanket, but... how did all this started, do you know it? Well, the origin is actually in the blanket that you see on the picture below. I started it in december 2011 and... there it is... still unfinished, always under construction. And, you know what? I HAD ENOUGH!

I'M GOING TO FINISH MY BLANKET AND YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE IT ALONG

I wrote the story on this post, but I'll make a brief overview just in case you don't know about it. It was Christmas 2011 and my mother broke her femur, what brought a lot of hours in the hospital and taking care of her at home; so you can imagine what that means: a lot of crochet hours ahead. Then I decided to make all the blocks in Jan Eaton's book "200 crochet blocks" (still in progress). One thing led to another, I started joining them, then I created the group "Proyecto Colcha" in my shop, in which we gathered to crochet our blankets together, and later on I created Proyecto Colcha 2.0.

Bienvenidas al origen del Proyecto Colcha. Sois muchas ya las que os habéis sumado a esta iniciativa y os habéis hecho vuestra colcha, pero.. cómo empezó todo, lo sabéis? Pues el origen está en esta manta que veis en la foto. La empecé en diciembre del 2011 y ahí sigue... inacabada, siempre en construcción. Y sabéis qué? QUE SE ACABÓ!

VOY A ACABAR MI COLCHA Y TÚ LO VAS A HACER CONMIGO

Ya conté la historia en este post, pero os haré un breve resumen para quien no la conozca. Mi madre se rompió el fémur en las navidades del 2011. Muchas horas de hospital y cuidados en casa, y ya sabéis que eso es sinónimo de mucho ganchillo. En ese momento decidí hacer todas las aplicaciones del libro "200 labores de ganchillo" de Jan Eaton (still in progress). Una cosa llevó a la otra, empecé a unirlos formando una colcha, después formé el grupo "Proyecto Colcha" en mi tienda, en el que nos hacíamos nuestras colchas juntas, y más tarde creé el Proyecto Colcha 2.0.

From then, I use to share my progress (not too much progress though) on instagram and facebook, that's how I know that you guys really love the blanket and would like to have the pattern and some directions. Unfortunately there's no such thing as a "pattern", because I've just been using patterns that I've found in books or blogs, and regarding to the materials I've used leftovers mostly.

But since I really want to finish it and I know that you really want to make your own version, I'm going to share with you all the info that I'm able to compile. My challenge is to finish it by March 2017, so... MARCH 2017... there I go!

Desde entonces comparto mis avances (pocos, la verdad) en instagram y facebook, por lo que me consta que la colcha os ha gustado mucho, incluso me soléis pedir los patrones y todo tipo de indicación. No hay un patrón concreto para esta colcha, son aplicaciones que encuentro en libros y en internet. En cuanto a los materiales, he ido usando restos de ovillos y he perdido la pista de algunos de ellos, pero muchos otros sí que los tengo controlados.

Por todo esto, quiero aprovechar este arranque que me ha entrado de terminar la colcha para compartir con vosotras toda la información que recuerde para que os podáis hacer vuestra propia versión. Mi reto es terminarla en marzo, que es cuando empezaron las clases del Proyecto Colcha original. Así que MARZO 2017... allá vamos!
