Maria Gullberg entrevista a... Mamaquilla!

Hi! I’m Julia, a 32 years old argentinian girl that found in knitting a way of living and a way to see life.
‘I’m BeKnitting’ is the sentence that built the foundation of MAMAQUILLA, the brand that I bring to life since 2009. It’s a space of ‘sensitive plots’ as I like to say. A space to learn how to knit, to allow us be and mainly to recognise ourselves as pure creative magic.

Through MQ I’d like to inspire and promote those who are close, the same way I promote and inspire myself with every single project in my hands. This is how I work: feeling as one of many, but with a unique power: my power.

I use knitting as a way to find myself and others. And in that way, to love my net. A net with love, resilience and faith in that we can create what we believe.
We plot everyday from a particular thing to a ‘whole something’ in the same way a stitch is part of a whole.
What about colours? Colours are my allies in this bright plan to shine together. I believe in the transforming force of the colours since...forever! They are part of my daily message.
CRochetting runs through my days in a very concrete way: I’m always crochetting a new design, giving classes or testing new stitches and yarns. But it’s also part of my days in a very symbolic and strong way. Knitting teaches me everything. And here I go, sharing what I learn!

Hola! Soy Julia!

How old were you and who taught you to crochet?
When I was 15 years old, my aunt Susana together with my grandma Noemi, introduced me to the knitting world. I knitted garments from the beginning. I extremely enjoyed all the process.
Little by little I started learning other techniques: macrame was my second technique and the first one that I started selling at markets and handmade festivals. Later on, I learned to work with a loom, and last, crochet arrived.
With crochet was different, as I was 21 years old and I was self taught. I remember 3 things from that experience: First, is that it took me 3 winters to be able to crochet. Second, is how much  I enjoyed crocheting that ‘no-circle’ and the magic that floated in the air the following days. And last and most importantly, the strength that came from achieving that goal.
Only a few months later I was travelling around south america with my crocheted garments! A whole collection of crocheted accessories!

¿A qué edad y quién te enseñó a tejer?
A mis 21 años, aprendí sola!

What do you think are the benefits of crochet? And the best thing about
crochet?
In my experience as a crocheter and as a teacher, I can say that there are many benefits. In the physical plane, as well as in the mental plane and spiritual plane, is pure magic!
I would like to share the following idea that is my guiding idea in MAMAQUILLA: the ultimate power is in believing ourselves capable of creating wonders.
In crocheting happens in a very obvious and strong way that is difficult to ignore that event: we are makers! We have the power in the heart of our hands! And in the roots of everything, in our essence!
When we crochet, all our attention is focused in the fact. The head switches off, we are still, only our hands are dancing. The body relaxes, we can focus, we create and finally...we believe in ourselves and all our potential.
Every finished project is a hug that we give to ourselves!

What do you like most to crochet?
What I like to crochet the most is garments and accessories. I enjoy two things : One, is that we can think of garments and accessories that dress us, and in that, look for garments that identify us, avoiding the impositions from fashion rules. Far from stereotyping us, being able to make our own clothes is always an invitation to align us as authentic beings, and I find that very interesting! ‘what do I want to communicate with my clothes?’
And the other thing I enjoy is playing, with colours, with shapes and volumes! It hasn’t been long since I am interested in garment construction and I don’t have formal studies but it is a scene that I enjoy a lot and from where I learn a lot too!

Do you have many courses/workshops?
I teach classes in my study in Buenos Aires, where I live. I enjoy a lot sharing my knowledge and up until today, there are more than 30 women that every month sit around my table, ready to share and learn! In these classes I work with a freestyle method, in which each student can choose their projects and I accompany them.
This year, in addition, I started the LABORATORY option. A space that I wanted to introduce for a long time, in where we can develop a more creative attitude (or CreaCtive, as I like to say, because you have to be active to be creative) and a more committed with the process of making in a garment/accessory in particular. I wish to be able to host several of those during 2019.
Finally, some time ago I introduced the distance learning option through  Online Classes and selling patterns. Both, with proposals for winter and summer season! I have the pleasure to have many online students with whom I continue learning and sharing my work!

Have you published any books or been involved with a pattern in others' books about crochet?
Yes, I have! In the last few years I have had the opportunity to be part of those kind of projects!
For about 3 years I wrote magazines for the argentinian Editorial House Evia Ediciones. With them, we made 13 publications, each of them with 8 to 9 projects, all focused in the Decor Crochet.
In 2018 I published a short book with another editorial house in Argentina, ‘The Art of Knitting and Crochetting’. It was a very special publication, as it was all focused on babies. It was called ‘9 months’ and it had 21 projects in total.
And finally, in 2018 I was invited to participate in the ‘Knitting craziness’, curated by the Spanish magazine ‘The Sewing Box Magazine’. I was elated to be given the opportunity to share the experience with so many people that I admire and continuously follow.
