The Constant Knitter, Dublin

It's been months since I visited Ireland, but I still thinking about that as it had been yesterday. And wishing to come back as soon as possible.. Therefore this post is a bit of a bittersweet bite, on the one hand is sweet to bring back all the good memories, on the other hand it makes me sad not being there.

The Constant Knitter is one of those "secret" gems that could almost be unnoticed if you're passing by and you don't know what is it about, but once you're inside you enter straight to another universe. This kind of universe that you and me know... You won't find  an empty spot there, since everything is covered on wonderful things, and the variety of samples and knitted shawls sweaters, hats... is so huge that it's not possible to leave the place without a new project in mind.

Han pasado ya unos cuantos meses desde que fuimos a Irlanda, pero yo lo sigo recordando como si fuese ayer. Y con deseos de volver cuanto antes. Por lo que este post es un poco agridulce, por un lado dulces recuerdos, por otro lado pena por no estar ahí.

The Constant Knitter es otra de esas joyitas que podría pasar casi desapercibida si pasas por delante, pero al entrar pasas directamente a otro universo. Ese universo que tú y yo conocemos... No hay un solo milímetro vacío en esta tienda de Dublín, y la variedad de muestras es tan extensa que difícilmente te irás de ahí sin un proyecto nuevo en la cabeza.

There's another peculiarity regarding to yarn shops: their names. It's easy to find a yarn shop with a funny name, specially puns using knitting-stitches related words. The Constant Knitter remind us the so typical image of a knitter knitting day and night, and it also sounds like the name of this film, "The Constant Gardener", which for a moment mixes in our brains two magnificent concepts: Yarn and Ralph Fiennes.

Otra de las peculiaridades de las tiendas de lanas es que suelen tener nombres la mar de ingeniosos. Tanto en castellano como en inglés, los juegos de palabras parecen no acabar y son siempre sugerentes y divertidos. The Constant Knitter, a parte de evocar una imagen tan típica como un tejedor tejiendo sin cesar, recuerda al nombre de aquella película de Ralph Fiennes, "The Constant Gardener", que en España se llamó "El Jardinero Fiel". (Mezclar tienda de lanas y Ralph Fiennes ya es demasiado para la cabeza y la sensibilidad humana, lo se... )

Once again, the amount and variety of yarns and threads is huge, and so are the accessories. By the way, I bought there a shape to block socks, since I bought the most wonderful irish yarn in Galway, and I'm planning to make some socks out of it. Eventually...

Also, the shop has an uptairs floor where they host workshops and the most amazing knitting meetings, with VIP Knitters. And last but not least... they have a wonderful knitting machine.

Como no podía ser de otra forma, la variedad de lanas e hilaturas es enorme, así como todo tipo de complementos y accesorios. Ahí aproveché para comprarme una horma para calcetines, ya que me compré una preciosa lana irlandesa en Galway con la que algún día pretendo tejer unos calcetines.

Además, el local dispone de un piso superior en el que se imparten talleres de todo tipo y tienen lugar reuniones de tejedores (Y muy serias, con tejedores y diseñadores muy gordos!). Y, como sorpresa final, lo que terminó de conquistar mi corazón: una tricotosa...

The Constant Knitter is located on 88 Francis St, Merchants Quay, Dublin 8. Very close to Saint Patrick's Cathedral. There're also several antiques shops on the same street, so it worths a visit altogether.

The Constant Knitter está en 88 Francis St, Merchants Quay, Dublin 8. Consulta el horario antes de ir por si acaso, ya sabes que las tiendas de lanas suelen tener un horario un poco diferente. Además estás bien cerquita de Saint Patrick's Cathedral y en la misma calle de la tienda hay varias tiendas de antigüdades muy curiosas, por lo que la visita merece la pena.

Aaahhh, sweet Ireland... I'm still dreaming of your colours... Either the ones in your landscapes and the ones in your yarnshops. Because, you know that when I go on a trip I enjoy two different kinds of tourism. The leisure tourism and even more leisure tourism. 

Today: Ireland. I was so lucky that when I turned 40 years old I got a trip to Ireland as a birthday present. How cool is that? I still can't believe it. So, there we went, Karl and I, and we enjoy ourselves like children, walking around its fields and yarn skeins. 

Ahhh, Irlanda... aún sueño con tus colores... Los de los paisajes y los de las tiendas de lanas. Por que ya sabéis que yo cuando voy de viaje hago dos tipos de turismo. El de placer y el de más placer aún. En este caso: Irlanda. Por mi 40 cumpleaños recibí el maravilloso regalo de un viaje a Irlanda, que Karl y yo disfrutamos como niños paseando por prados y entre ovillos. Primera parada:

THIS IS KNIT 

Over the last years, that I've been visiting yarn shops when travelling, I've had the opportunity to know a lot of different kinds of yarns and threads that I had never seen before, but I had never been to a place where they produce their own wool. And what a wool...!! 

There are knitting shops here and there, where you can buy your knitted clothing, but sometimes you find THE SHOP, a jewel, like this nice shop in Dublin.

Estos años visitando tiendas de lanas me han dado la oportunidad de conocer muchos tipos diferentes de hilaturas que no había visto antes, pero nunca había estado en un lugar que produjese su propia lana, y qué lanas... Y esto se refleja en las tiendas. En cada esquina hay tiendas de jerseys, gorros y productos tejidos en general, y de vez en cuando encuentras alguna joyita como esta tienda de Dublín.

There's no time enough to see all the stuff in this shop. I couldn't get out of there! Everywhere you look at, you see something that catches your eye and you want to buy! All those colours, and textures... The diversity, quantity and quality is amazing. Also, upstairs, there's a spot where you can knit and they host workshops.

No hay tiempo suficiente para ver todo lo que hay dentro de esta tienda. No podía salir de ahí! Allá donde mires ves algo bonito que quieres comprar! Todos los colores, todas las texturas... La variedad, cantidad y calidad son increíbles. En la parte de arriba tienen espacio para tejer e imparten talleres y también tienen sus propios kits para tejer.

This is Knit is located in a beautiful mall, the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, in Dublin, South William Street. You can spend some time there and have lunch at the bar beside, where you can still see the shop through the window, by the way.

This is Knit está situada dentro de un precioso centro comercial, el Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, en el centro de Dublín, South William Street. Puedes pasar ahí un rato y almorzar en el bar de al lado, lo cual te permite seguir mirando la tienda por la ventana. (que es lo que yo hice, jejeee)
