Hi! I’m Lucia, the woman behind @knittingtheskyline, my personal brand where I design my own patterns, I host workshops and show different techniques such as macrame, crochet and knitting. I have 2 different professional fields related to design: on one side, everything that has to be with yarn and needles; on the other side graphic design, which allows me to have a series of tools and abilities to develop my work in different areas, from my patterns to work with other brands and designers.
Thanks to this I jumped from hosting workshops in my own city to the rest of the country. Monday to Friday I teach knitting and crochet in several places around Madrid and during the weekends you can find me in Seville, Barcelona or any other cities around Spain. I have a very active mind and my hands hurry up all they can to follow the rhythm of my imagination. I am very joyful and creative, which has taken me without me realising it, to host events inside the yarn and knittings sector, in specialised markets and festivals; a side of me that I have discovered through knitting and collaborating with yarn brands that I admire. 2019 looks like a great year in many areas of my life, I have several projects that have already started, and others that will make you all smile and even laugh.

Hola, soy Lucía, quien está detrás de @knittingtheskyline, mi marca personal desde donde diseño mis propios patrones, ofrezco talleres y pongo en práctica diferentes técnicas como el macramé, el ganchillo y tejer a dos agujas. Tengo 2 facetas laborales principalmente relacionadas con el diseño, por un lado todo lo que tenga que ver con hilos y agujas, y por otro como diseñadora gráfica, lo que me permite tener una serie de herramientas y destrezas para poder desarrollar mi trabajo en diferentes ámbitos, desde mis patrones, a colaborar con marcas del sector y otras diseñadoras.
He tenido mi propia tienda de lanas, en la que aprendí muchas cosas, realicé muchos talleres y me regaló algo que considero muy importante: conectar con el público, entender a las tejedoras, sus necesidades y sus inquietudes, de ahí que diera el salto a realizar mis talleres no solo en mi ciudad, también por toda nuestra geografía. De lunes a viernes imparto clases de punto y ganchillo en diferentes sitios de Madrid, los fines de semana puedes encontrarme en Sevilla, en Barcelona, o en cualquier otra ciudad. Who taught you how to crochet?
I’d love to be able to tell you a beautiful story, maybe telling you that my grandma taught me to crochet a summer afternoon...but it isn’t true! I am self taught, I started 7 years ago, during a series of very boring and wintery days. I had hopes to start going to the gym and I ended up making amigurumis!
It isn’t a beautiful story but we could say that it’s a story of self improvement! hahahaha! Truth is that I remember those terrible moments trying to start a straight chain and I don’t understand how I got to this moment!
¿Quién te enseñó a hacer ganchillo?
Me encantaría poder contar una historia bonita, como que las tardes de verano con mi abuela ella me enseñaba... ¡pero no! Soy autodidacta, empecé hace ya 7 años en unos aburridos e invernales días, tenía la esperanza de empezar el gimnasio y ¡acabé haciendo amigurumis! No es una historia bonita pero ¿se podría decir que es una historia de superación? jajajaja! La verdad es que recuerdo esos momentos infernales de intentar hacer una cadeneta recta y ¡no sé cómo he podido llegar hasta aquí!
You’re a new addition to a yarn collection. Which color would you be and which type of yarn?
Uhhhhh! I love this question! I believe I would be a hand dyed yarn, with a black base and pink and lilac sprinkles. It would probably be an alpaca and mohair blend, because my own hair keeps falling down.
Imagina que eres una nueva incorporación a una línea de lanas. ¿Qué color serias y qué tipo de lana?
¡Uhhhh! ¡Esta pregunta me mola! Creo que sería una lana teñida a mano, color base el negro con motitas rosas y lilas, seguramente esté hecha de alpaca con mohair, ¡por aquello de que no paro de perder pelo!
If you were to go on Holiday and could only take three items, what would they be?
That’s a hard question, if I go to the mountains I would bring my crochet hook, a skein of yarn and a pair of scissors without any doubt; but if I am going to the beach, I know that crocheting with all the sand it’s very difficult, so I’d bring my bikini, sunscreen and towel. I must confess that I am a seaside person, so I almost never crochet when on holiday, it has also finished being a hobby to be my job so I need to take breaks.
Si fueras de vacaciones y solo pudieras llevar tres cosas, ¿qué cosas serían?
Ufff qué difícil, si me voy a la montaña tengo claro que me llevaría una aguja de ganchillo, un ovillo y unas tijeras, pero si voy a la playa tengo claro que con la arena lo de ganchillear es más difícil así que bikini, crema y toalla :P
Tengo que confesar que soy más de playa por lo que casi nunca tejo en vacaciones, también para mi ha dejado de ser un hobby para ser una profesión por lo que necesito mis descansos.
What is your favourite crochet stitch and why?
I love the yasmin stitch, its difficulty, its textures and the shapes it makes. The first time I made it, I was fascinated by the shapes that were coming along while crocheting and I couldn’t believe it!
I also go to the other side of the spectrum and I love the double crochet (single crochet) I can’t help it, I would make everything using double crochet!
¿Cuál es tu punto de ganchillo favorito y porqué?
Me encanta el punto jazmín, la complejidad que tiene, la textura y las formas que hace. La primera vez que lo hice me fascinó ver cómo las formas iban saliendo a medida que avanzaba y no podía creer que eso saliese de mis manos, ¡era tan mullido y tan bonito que no podía creermelo!
También estoy en el extremo contrario y me encanta el punto bajo, no lo puedo evitar, haría todo en punto bajo!
If you step outside your front door today and find a lottery ticket worth $10 million, what would you do?
No doubt, I would move to Bali, it’s something that’s always in my mind, I would spend my days making macrame pieces, crocheting and knitting, nothing else!
¿Si salieras a la calle hoy y encontraras un billete de lotería premiado con 10 millones, que harías?
Tengo claro que me iría a vivir a Bali, es algo que siempre pienso, me dedicaría a hacer piezas de macramé, ganchillo y punto y no haría nada más!
I had my own yarn shop, where I learned a lot of things, hosted many workshops and gave me a very valuable present: the chance to connect with my community, to understand the rest of the knitters, their needs and interests.
