Scout is known for being a true character. Only 4 years old, but she's already the one in charge. Not only in his own little wooden village, but also at home.

Don't get me wrong, she's not a bad tempered girl, neither spoiled nor fickle; is just that she knows what she wants and everything else is not interesting to her.

Scout es lo que podemos llamar "todo un carácter". A sus 4 años es claramente quien manda, no sólo en su pequeño poblado de casas de madera, si no también en casa.

No me malinterpretéis, ella no tiene malhumor, ni es una niña caprichosa y mimada, simplemente es que sabe lo que quiere, y lo demás no siempre le vale...

In this pictures you'll see her playing with her wooden blocks with Banana, her inseparable teddy bear. But I'd say that she's more into destroying that in to building. She likes to pretend that is Banana who skids himself into the blocks, but  it's actually her.

En estas fotos la vemos jugando a las construcciones con Banana, su inseparable osito. Aunque más que construir, a Scout lo que le gusta es destruir. Finge que es Banana el que se cae encima de las casitas, pero en realidad es ella.

- "Look Banana, this one's is yous castle".

- "Pero Banana, qué haces! Ya lo has vuelto a romper todo!"

Santa's hat

What a cold days we are having lately! A lot of cold and fog... This morning I've seen Minus ready to go to school in his orange T-shirt and I've almost collapsed. "Please, please Minus, go and wrap yourself! It's very cold, put on a nice and warm jumper and a hat!" (So mother-ish, I know...)

Estos días está haciendo más frío y mucha niebla. Esta mañana he visto que Minus iba a salir de casa con su camiseta naranja y casi me da un ataque. Le he dicho: "Minus, por favor, abrígate bien, que hoy hace mucho frío!! Ponte jersey y gorro!!" (Super madre, no?)

Minus has huffed and puffed a little but he's acceded to go to his room to change his clothes. And 5 minutes later, believe or not, he's made his entrance wearing a Santa's hat! ... "Really Minus, a Santa's hat? There's no other hat that you can use?" I'm still wide-eyed...

Minus ha resoplado un par de veces pero se ha ido a su habitación a cambiarse. Al cabo de 5 minutos me aparece así, con un gorro de Papá Noel puesto... "Pero Minus, no había otro gorro, de verdad?" Me ha dejado con los ojos como platos. Aún no me lo creo.

Nothing to do, he wants to go to school wearing his Santa's hat. Scout's been laughing at him all morning, but he doesn't care. Ok then, it's alright. After all, who cares? Wear the hat you want to, kid!

Que nada, que quiere irse al colegio con su gorro de Papá Noel. Scout lleva toda la mañana riéndose de él, pero a Minus no le importa. Se ha ido al cole con su gorro. Pues muy bien. Al fin y al cabo, qué más da? Que se ponga el gorro que quiera!

When it was Minus' birthday and Scout ate all the cookies

It's been a year since I created Minus, started my online shop and organized the first CAL with Wasel Wasel... My amigurumi family has increased since then and we've had the chance to see them in many different situations and adventures. Easy and day-to-day adventures, but adventures after all.

Por fin llegó el cumpleaños de Minus! Estábamos todos esperando nerviosos... hace aproximadamente un año que lo creé, que lancé la tienda, que organicé el primer CAL con Wasel Wasel... Desde entonces se han ido incorporando nuevos miembros a mi familia de amigurumis y hemos tenido oportunidad de verles en acción en varias "aventuras". Aventuras sencillas, cotidianas, pero aventuras al fin y al cabo.

So, yesterday we organized a big party. Everybody was there! Minus and Scout were excited waiting for the others to come.

-"Minus, you hand me a cookie?" 

-"No Scout, we have to wait for our guests to come. You'll eat later." 

-"But it's not for me, it's for Banana!" 

-"Scout, fake bears don't eat real cookies"

-"What do you mean fake...?"

Así que ayer organizamos una gran fiesta para la ocasión. No faltó nadie! Minus y Scout esperaban nerviosos a los demás invitados. 

-"Minus, me das una galleta?" 

-"No Scout, tenemos que esperar a los demás, luego comerás." 

-"Pero si es que no es para mi, es para Banana" 

-"Scout, los osos de peluche no comen galletas..."

-"Cómo que de peluche...?"

Pickles and Karl arrived first. Pickles was so excited! He had this very special present that Minus was going to love and he couldn't wait... the last installment of "Pirates and Corsairs" by H.K. Franklin! Minus and Pickles are addicted to this saga of novels about Henry "the long", the most scary and bloodthirsty pirate of the Caribbean seas.

-"Minus, can I take a cookie now?"
-"No Scout, wait for the rest!"
-"Hmmmm"

Los primeros en llegar fueron Pickles y Karl. Qué contento estaba Pickles! Traía un regalo muy especial para Minus y estaba deseando dárselo... la última entrega de "Piratas y Corsarios" de H.K. Franklin!! Minus y Pickles están enganchadísimos a esta serie de novelas sobre Henry "El Largo", el pirata más temible y sanguinario de todo el Caribe.

-"Minus, puedo coger ya una galleta?"
-"No Scout, espérate a que estemos todos!"
-"Hmmmm"

Scout didn't like her brother's telling off at all and set herself aside the group. There she stayed for a while, in silence and the others were opening presents and talking about Henry The Long. But when Scout is quiet....

A Scout no le hizo ninguna gracia la reprimenda de su hermano y se apartó del grupo. Ahí se quedó un rato callada, mientras los demás abrían paquetes y hablaban de Henry "El Largo". Y cuando Scout está mucho rato callada....

-"Hey, Conchita is here!"

-"Good, and she's bringing the cakes!! Yay!"

-"Come Conchita, sit here and put your hat on!"

-"Ya está aquí Conchita!"

-"Bien, y trae los pasteles!! Yupiii!"

-"Conchita, ven, siéntate aquí y ponte tu gorro!"

-"Scout, now you ca..."

-"Wait a minute Minus, I think something is happening there..."

-"But... why are all the cookies on the floor?"

-"It wasn't me!"

-"Scout, ahora ya pued..."

-"Un momento Minus, creo que está pasando algo ahí..."

-"Pero... porqué están las galletas en el suelo?"

-"Yo no he sido!"

I told you... if Scout is quiet for a long time is because there's something in her mind... and not good... While everybody was talking and looking at Conchita's cake, she and Banana took good care of the cookies... She says that real bears don't like eating from plates, they like floor better.

Ya os dije que si Scout está callada mucho rato es porque algo está tramando... Mientras todos estaban pendientes de los regalos y del pastel de Conchita, ella y Banana se hicieron cargo de las galletas... Dice que es que a Banana le gustan más en el suelo, que los platos no son para osos de verdad.

Scout, a rebel baby

Meet Scout, the new family member

Os presento a Scout, el nuevo miembro de la familia.

Scout is Minus´ little sister and she is 4 years old. She never liked dolls; what she really likes is teddy bears. She likes them so much that she even says she is a bear and that´s why she always wears her onesie with little ears. She even wears it when she goes out of home.

She is still almost a baby but she has clear ideas and she knows what she wants. Despite being the youngest at home, she is the one wearing the pants. What a temper she has!

Scout es la hermana pequeña de Minus, y tiene 4 años. Nunca le han gustado las muñecas, a ella lo que le gustan son los osos de peluche. Le gustan tanto que incluso dice que ella es un oso y por eso siempre lleva su pijama con orejas. No se lo quita ni para ir a la calle.

Sigue siendo casi un bebé, pero tiene las ideas muy claras y sabe bien lo que quiere. A pesar de ser la pequeña de la casa es la que manda. Menudo carácter tiene!

Lately, she says that she is too old to share the bedroom with her brother and she has made it to have her own room, with her little bed and her stuff. She spends hours there, drawing and playing with her teddies. Scout likes enjoying of her spare time.

The time to go to bed is a real struggle. “Scout, it's time to sleep...”, “No!”. Every night the same. She says that it is too early and that she is really busy. Her mum, Estrella, tries to read fairy tales for her, but Scout prefers to invent her own and at the end it is mum who ends up falling asleep while Scout goes on with her stories. (Her stories are always about bears, of course...)

Últimamente dice que ya es muy mayor para compartir habitación con su hermano, y ha conseguido un espacio para ella sola. Con su camita y sus cosas. Ahí pasa horas dibujando y jugando con sus osos. A Scout le gusta disfrutar de su tiempo libre.

Pero el momento de ir a la cama es una auténtica lucha... “Scout, es hora de dormir...” “No!” Y así todas las noches... dice que aún es muy pronto y que tiene muchas cosas que hacer. Su madre, Estrella, le intenta leer cuentos, pero Scout prefiere inventarse los suyos propios y al final es mamá quien acaba durmiendo mientras Scout sigue inventando historias. (Sus historias siempre son acerca de osos, claro...)

I'm specially proud of this character. Some of my favourite cartoon characters are Guille, Mafalda's little brother, and Sally, Charlie Brown's little sister. While their big siblings are pessimistic and tormented creatures, this two little fellas always seems to be over it, they do their own way and they are usually able to solve their own problems. I've named her after Scout Finch, from Harper Lee's "To kill a mockingbird", also a little girl with a strong personality...

Like Scout, I've always liked teddy bears better than dolls. I had a lot of them and I used to sleep not with one but with all of them at the same time. My father would get into my room in the middle of the night to remove them from the bed since I was red and sweating, about to become suffocated.

Este personaje me hacía especial ilusión. Algunos de mis personajes de historieta favoritos son Guille, el hermano pequeño de Mafalda, y Sally, la hermana pequeña de Charlie Brown. Mientras sus hermanos mayores son personajes pesimistas y atormentados, ellos, parecen estar por encima de todo, van a su aire y a menudo saben resolver sus propios problemas. El nombre, es mi pequeño homenaje a Scout Finch, personaje protagonista de la novela de Harper Lee, "Matar a un ruiseñor", también una pequeña con mucha personalidad...

A mi, como a Scout, siempre me gustaron más los ositos de peluche que las muñecas. Tenía muchos y me los ponía todos en la cama. Por la noche mi padre tenía que entrar la habitación a quitármelos de encima, ya que estaba roja y empapada en sudor, a punto de asfixiarme.

Scout's pattern is a 10 pages PDF that includes all the instructions to make your amigurumi as well as tutorials for the special stitches. It's full of pictures of Scout so you can see the doll from different perspectives.

It's a quite easy pattern, suitable for beginners and experts, and it has a special feature: you can remove Scout's hood. It also includes the patterns for the teddy bear and the blanket, so you'll learn even more new techniques, such as how to crochet chevron.

El patrón de Scout es un PDF de 10 páginas que incluye las instrucciones para confeccionar a tu amigurumi y tutoriales de los puntos especiales. Está lleno de fotos de Scout para que puedas ver el muñeco desde todos los ángulos y posiciones. 

Es un patrón bastante sencillo apropiado tanto para principiantes como para expertas, con la peculiaridad de la capucha que se quita y se pone.  Además incluye el patrón del osito de peluche y de la manta, con los que aprenderás aún más técnicas nuevas, como por ejemplo el chevron.

Koningsdag, an orange mess

Much has been said about the Rio Carnival, San Fermines, Oktoberfest... but this list is not complete unless you add King's Day (Koningsdag), in The Netherlands. The whole country goes out to the streets in order to celebrate king's Willem-Alexander birthday and... it's  pure madness...

Se habla mucho de los Carnavales del Río, de los San Fermines, de la Oktoberfest... pero a esta lista le falta sin duda el día del rey (Koningsdag), en Holanda. El país entero sale a la calle a celebrar el cumpleaños de Willem-Alexander y es una auténtica locura....

No orange... no party!

Sin naraja... no hay fiesta!

Minus, Pickles and Scout also wanted to celebrate Koningsdag so they asked me to make them orange t-shirts. The Dutch royal family belongs to the house Oranje Nassau so orange is the national colour and they take it really seriously. Everybody would wear orange clothes or an orange accesory. Very discreet.

Minus, Pickles y Scout también querían celebrar el día del rey por lo que me pidieron que les hiciera unas camisetas naranjas. La familia real holandesa pertenece a la casa de Oranje Nassau, por lo que el color nacional es el naranja y eso aquí se lo toman realmente en serio. Todo el mundo va vestido de naranja o lleva por lo menos algún complemento a la vista de ese color. Muy discreto todo.

Weeks before the big day you'll see the sidewolk delimited with tape, that's people marking their spot because that day is allowed to sell in the street and the city becomes a giant flea market. (Minus found some very nice second hand furniture for his home. I'll show you soon!) 

Semanas antes podemos ver cinta aislante por las aceras demarcando los espacios reservados, ya que ese día está permitido vender en la calle y la ciudad se convierte en un rastrillo gigante (Minus encontró un montón de muebles de segunda mano para su casa. Ya os los enseñaré!) Otros hacen juegos, pintan las uñas, cantan, se disfrazan, te dejan que les tires huevos a la cara.... en fin, que hay que verlo para creerlo.

Everything is funny and interesting this day but to me the real attraction is the endless boat parade in the canals. Each boat is an itinerant party, with its drinks, its music, even its barbecue. It looks like they were competing for who's having the best time. (I've seen some time someone falling into the canal, of course... but, what does it matter? It's Koningsdag!!)

Todo es muy divertido y loco en este día, pero para mi la verdadera atracción es el interminable desfile de barcos por los canales. Cada barco es una fiesta ambulante, con sus bebidas, su música, su barbacoa... Parece como una competición de a ver quién se lo está pasando mejor. (Alguna vez he visto a alguien caerse al canal, claro... Aunque, qué mas da? Es Koningsdag!!)

Koningsdag is one more reason to visit Amsterdam in the springtime. It's worth to experience it, at least once in a life. Besides... I think there's some mysterious and secret pact with the forces of nature that makes the sun shine every year even if the weather forecast says it's rainning cats and dogs.

Koningsdag es otro de los motivos para visitar Amsterdam en primavera. Merece la pena verlo, aunque sea una vez en la vida. Además, creo que algún pacto secreto con fuerzas sobrenaturales hace que cada año haga buen tiempo en este día, a pesar de que el parte meteorológico anuncie lo contrario.
