The Sun and the Turtle entrevista a... Mongoreto

My name is Mariela Dal Maso, I am 34 years old, I have 2 kids and I am Argentinian. When I was a teenager, I learned to crochet reading a magazine about basic stitches; I managed to crochet in the round and I left it there.
Years later, and due to financial reasons, I grabbed my hooks and brushes to try and earn a living without giving up on my decision to raise my kids full time. I tried several things; one of them was an amigurumi which was precisely my first sale.

I am self taught from the beginning, here's a secret: I hate following patterns! So out of trial and error, a little monster was born. That’s the reason why I felt more comfortable creating my own designs.

Who would have thought that years later I would be writing my patterns. It was terribly difficult to translate them into a comprehensible language because I had never read a pattern before.
As everything else in life, with patience and love, I think I achieved a beautiful result: My little big proyect “Mongoreto".

MONGORETO

Mi nombre es Mariela Dal Maso, tengo 34 años, 2 hijos y soy argentina. En la adolescencia aprendrí a tejer crochet leyendo una revista de puntos básicos, logré hacer círculos y lo dejé ahí.
Unos cuantos años después y por temas económicos agarré agujas y pinceles para intentar un ingreso sin desistir de mi elección de criar a tiempo completo a mis hijos. Probé varias cosas, entre ellas un amigurumi, justamente fue el amigurumi mi primer venta.

Un comienzo muy autodidacta porque, ahí les va un secreto: odio seguir patrones! Así que a prueba y error salió un monstruito. Por esto mismo fue que me sentí más cómoda creando mis propios diseños.
Quién diría que unos años después redactaría mis patrones. Horrores me costó volcarlos a un lenguaje entendible porque jamás había leído uno.
Pero como todo en la vida, con paciencia y amor creo que llegué a un hermoso resultado: Mi pequeño gran proyecto “Mongoreto”.

Where does the name Mongoreto come from? How long it’s been since you make amigurumi?
“Mongoreto” or “Mongoreto Flores” is widely used in Argentina to refer to someone whose name is unknown or who is not a specific individual. It’s a popular saying my mum used to say.

I chose it because I thought it was ugly at the beginning but I knew I’d love it throughout the time. Of course now I find it a beautiful name. It’s been approximately 4 years since I made that first amigurumi.

A qué se debe el nombre Mongoreto? Hace cuánto que haces Amigurumi?
“Mongoreto” o “Mongoreto Flores” en Argentina se usa mucho para nombrar a alguien del cual no se sabe el nombre o no es alguien en particular. Es un dicho popular que decía mi mamá.
Lo elegí porque al principio me parecía feo, pero sabía que con el tiempo iba a quererlo. Claro que hoy el nombre me parece hermoso. Aproximadamente 4 años pasaron ya desde aquel primer amigurumi.

Could you tell us about your creative process?
Generally I’m inspired when I have a very repetitive order; then my mind starts to fly and what I´d like to do comes to my mind. I make some drawings and I try to mentally adapt it to crochet stitches. The materialization stage comes right after, when I crochet and unravel it until I like the result.

Podrías contarnos cuál es tu proceso creativo?
Generalmente me inspiro cuando tengo algún pedido demasiado repetitivo, ahí mi mente empieza a volar y se me ocurre qué me gustaría hacer. Hago varios dibujitos y trato de ir adaptándolo mentalmente a los puntos de crochet. Luego viene la etapa de materialización en donde tejo y destejo hasta que estoy conforme con el resultado.

Which is your favorite yarn? Do you have any ethical or aesthetic preference for your creations?
I love cotton yarn 100%. It gives a very good shape, texture, is hypoallergenic and I also make sure that I am not harming any animal, which are precisely my biggest inspiration.

Cuáles son tus hilos favoritos? Tienes algún tipo de preferencias sea de tipo ético o estético para tus creaciones?
Me encanta el hilo 100% de algodón. Le da muy buena forma, textura, es hipoalergénico y además me aseguro de no lastimar a ningún animal quienes justamente son la mayor inspiración.

What inspires you to create Amigurumi?Besides animals of course, I usually look for illustrations in old books. If well my designs are mainly basic, looking at very detailed drawings helps me to realize about the features I want to remark in order to ensure that every character can be understood.

Que te inspira cuando creas Amigurumis?
Además de los animales, claro, suelo buscar ilustraciones de cuentos antiguos. Si bien mis diseños se caracterizan por ser simples, el ver dibujos muy detallados me ayuda a darme cuenta qué rasgos resaltar para que se interprete cada personaje.

You have more than 12k instagram followers; what would you advise to those who want to increase the visibility of their creations?
I don’t think there’s any magic formula or at least, I don’t have it. However I pay attention to 2 things: firstly and mainly, the picture. Taking a clear picture of the product (even if I neither have a professional camera nor a photography studio). I wait for the moment of the day when I can make the most of natural light.
Secondly, not to saturate. I usually publish 1 or 2 posts per week, not much more. In Facebook and Pinterest I spread my updates much more.

Tienes más de 12.k seguidores en Instagram; que consejos le darías a las personas que quieren expandir la visibilidad de sus creaciones?
No creo que haya alguna fórmula mágica o al menos yo no la tengo. Pero le presto atención a 2 cosas: Primero y principal a la foto. Sacar una foto clara del producto (aunque no cuento con cámara profesional ni mucho menos un estudio fotográfico) espero el momento del día para aprovechar la mejor luz natural.
Y lo segundo es a no saturar. Suelo hacer 1 o 2 publicaciones por semana, no mucho más. En Facebook y Pinterest actualizo de modo mucho más espaciado.

Mi nombre es Jennifer Ramirez Saldarriaga, vivo en Helsinki Finlandia hace 7 años donde creé junto con mi compañero John The Sun and the Turtle. Soy Comunicadora social e hice una Maestría en Cultura Visual y Arte contemporáneo, trabajo principalmente diseñando patrones de Amigurumi y doy clases sobre Community Management y marketing para pequeños emprendedores. Me encanta viajar, cocinar, las plantas e investigo sobre la historia del Amigurumi. Amo todos los animales.

What’s the reason behind the name “The Sun and the Turtle”?
The Sun and the Turtle is the name that we use as a metaphor of the bond between heaven and earth. It represents balance, creation and inspiration, from the divine and worldly.

¿A qué se debe el nombre "The Sun and the Turtle"?
The Sun and the Turtle es el nombre que usamos como metáfora de la unión entre el cielo y la tierra. Representa balance, creación e inspiración desde lo divino y desde lo terrenal.

What inspires you to work?
I’ve always been inspired by nature and by my day-by-day experience. Lately, I have been inspired by ancient fabric and those protective guardian spirits amongst us that guide and protect us when we need a helping hand. Animals are my favorite motif to crochet and I enjoy combining them with human figures.

¿En qué te inspiras para trabajar?
Siempre me ha inspirado la naturaleza, y mis experiencias del día a día. Últimamente me he inspirado en tejidos ancestrales y espíritus guardianes que protegen o que están presentes a nuestro alrededor para guiarnos y protegernos cuando necesitamos una manita. Los animales son mis motivos favoritos para tejer y me encanta combinarlos con figuras humanas.

How did you learn to crochet?
When I moved to Finland, there was a time when I was getting over the cultural shock and I started knitting. I started to make amigurumi toys spontaneously; afterwards I searched for information about how to crochet and I found amigurumi in youtube. From that moment on, it became easier to cope with the cultural change and I felt more productive.
From that day I started sharing the toys I made under the name The Sun and the Turtle. At the beginning, it was difficult to create what I had in mind but bit by bit and practicing for hours (I had never crocheted before) I managed to express what I had in mind.

¿Como aprendiste a tejer?
Cuando me vine a vivir a Finlandia, hubo una temporada en la que estaba superando el shock cultural y empecé a tejer con agujas de maya. Empecé espontáneamente a hacer muñequitos y luego busqué información sobre cómo hacer ganchillo y encontré Amigurumi en Youtube. desde ese momento me fue mas fácil sobrellevar el cambio cultural y sentirme productiva.
Empecé a compartir mis muñequitos desde ese día con el nombre The Sun and the Turtle. Al principio fue difícil poder crear lo que tenía en mi cabeza pero de a poco y con muchas horas de práctica (Nunca había hecho ganchillo/crochet en mi vida) logré de a poco plasmar lo que se me venía a la cabeza.

What do you like the most of your work?
3 years ago, I started investigating about amigurumi and toys design on an academic way. I could say that my favorite part is being able to travel around the world, finding amigurumis and chatting with the designers. We all have a story to tell and that fills my heart with joy; furthermore the fact of realizing, through pictures or talking to other people who also make amigurumi, how this contemporary technique not only satisfies aesthetical or emotional values but also has a big potential as therapy, economic independence, social, visual, etc.
I also like it when people crochet one of my toys, take them on their trips and show me through social networks where are they going for a walk, that makes me super happy! I have received pictures from the Iguazu falls, the Niagara falls, Thailand, etc.

¿Cual es la parte que más te gusta de tu trabajo?
Hace 3 años empecé a investigar sobre los Amigurumi y sobre diseño de juguetes de manera académica. Podría decir que mi parte favorita es poder viajar a diferentes partes del mundo, encontrar Amigurumis y sentarme a conversar con los diseñadores. Todos tenemos una historia que contar y eso me llena de felicidad; también darme cuenta a través de fotos o discusiones con otras personas que hacen Amigurumi cómo ésta artesanía contemporánea no solo satisface un valor estético o emocional sino que tiene mucho potencial a nivel de terapia, independencia económica, social, visual, etcétera.
También me encanta cuando la gente teje uno de mis muñecos, se los llevan de viaje y me muestran vía redes sociales donde están paseando, eso me pone super contenta! He recibido fotos de las cataratas de Iguazu, De las cataratas del Niágara, de Thailandia, etc.

Is there any of your patterns that you specially like? Why?
It is difficult to choose one favorite pattern because all of them have something from me and my crochet learning in a specific time in my life. From the free patterns I could say that the Adorabilis Octopus is one of my favorites because when I saw the video of that little octopus swimming in the sea my eyes turned into hearts immediately and I started designing the pattern at that very moment. That pattern has received lots of love through the internet because it’s very easy to make and it can be used in many ways.

¿Hay alguno de tus patrones al que le tengas un especial cariño?, ¿porqué?
Es difícil escoger un patrón favorito, pues cada uno de mis patrones tienen algo de mi y de mis aprendizajes de ganchillo en un momento determinado de mi vida. De los patrones gratuitos podría decir que el pulpo Adorabilis es uno de mis favoritos porque cuando vi el vídeo de ese pulpo tan pequeñito nadando en el mar mis ojos se volvieron corazones al instante y empece a diseñar el patrón inmediatamente. Ese patrón ha recibido mucho amor vía internet por que es muy fácil de hacer y se puede usar de muchas maneras.

What a great time one has when one learns to make something with their own hands. With the joy of something taking shape and in turning into a creature, like is the case of amigurimi. Some of us do it has a hobby and others dedicate themselves to it and make that passion a way of life. 

But have you ever asked yourself where the  Amigurumi come from? 

Qué bien se lo pasa un@ cuando aprende a hacer algo con sus manos. Cuánto se disfruta cuando ese algo coge forma y, por ejemplo, se convierte en una figura como es el caso del amigurumi. Muchos lo hacemos como hobby e incluso otros se dedican a ello haciendo de su pasión un modo de vida. Pero, te has preguntado alguna vez cuál es el origen del Amigurumi?

Jennifer Ramírez, who likes to think of herself as a ‘hook ninja’, alongside her partner are ‘The Sun and the Turtle’. This Colombian emigrated in Finland, dedicates her time collecting her findings to document the beginnings of the amigurumi in a comprehensible manner. Jennifer had her first encounter with amigurumi when she moved to Finland, while looking for a hobby with which to amuse herself and help to make the transition easier. I feel very identified with the idea of her googling a way to knit a stuffed toy and encountering the amigurumi phenomenon that made her discover a whole new world (high five, Jennifer!).

Jennifer Ramírez, a quién le gusta pensarse como una “hook ninja” junto a su pareja son The Sun and the Turtle. Esta colombiana emigrada a Finlandia, ha dedicado tiempo a recopilar  sus hallazgos para documentar los orígenes del amigurumi de manera comprensible.

Jennifer tuvo su primer contacto con el amigurumi cuando se mudó a Finlandia, mientras buscaba un hobby que le entretuviese y le ayudase a hacer el cambio más llevadero. Me siento muy identificada al saber que mientras googleaba formas de tejer un muñeco se encontro con el fenómeno del amigurumi y eso le hizo descubrir un mundo nuevo (high five, Jennifer).

‘The Sun and the Turtle’ are inspired by kawaii aesthetics for their designs; kawaii  being a term taken from the popular Japanese culture present in all areas beyond just toys, meaning cute or tender: big heads, pink cheeks and expressive eyes. 

Si quieres indagar más sobre esta técnica que ha ganado tantos adeptos durante los últimos años centrándote más en conocer su historia que en el hecho de encontrar técnicas o patrones, este es el libro al que has de referirte.

The Sun and the Turtle orienta sus diseños hacia la estética kawaii, término tomado de la cultura popular japonesa presente en muchos ámbitos más allá de los juguetes o la estética como tal. El equivalente en español a algo “lindo” o “tierno”: cabezas grandes, mejillas rosadas y ojos expresivos.

An immersion into many concepts related to Japan as some integrate themselves into others; a journey through the different versions that each culture makes of amigurumi.

Una inmersión en muchos conceptos relacionados con Japón ya que unos van relacionándose con otros; un viaje a través de las diferentes versiones que cada cultura hace de los amigurumi. Una mirada hacia cómo definir a estos personajes: son monos, tienen personalidad. Un viaje hacia sus fuentes de inspiración.

MY PROJECT

In this case the choice was easy. Because the book is focused on investigating the origins of the amigurumi and does not focus on collecting patterns, the only pattern you can find is Inari the Fox, he is so kawaii and so cute, it is well worth the redundancy.

En este caso la elección era fácil. Debido a que el libro está orientado a investigar los orígenes del amigurumi y no se centra en coleccionar patrones, el único patrón que podrás encontrar es el de Inari the Fox, tan kawaii él y tan mono, valga la redundancia.
