Marina Opina: 300 TRUCOS, TÉCNICAS Y SECRETOS DE GANCHILLO by Jan Eaton

Now that winter is coming (you just thought about Game Of Thrones, I know it) it is the perfect moment for the lost sheeps to return to the path and get back to work, let's say for example, with The Blanket Project. Some of you can proudly say that the mission has been accomplished (I offer to those my warmest congratulations for that) and some others are in that acclimatization process where you make eyes at the sofa and you don´t think about going out so often.

Ahora que se acerca el invierno (acabas de pensar en Juego de Tronos, lo sé) es el momento perfecto para que las ovejas descarriadas vuelvan al redil y retomen sus labores, digamos por ejemplo, con el Proyecto Colcha. Algun@s de vosotros podéis estar orgullos@s de decir que ya es misión cumplida (mis más sinceras felicitaciones por ello) y otr@s estáis en ese proceso de aclimatación en el que se le hacen ojitos al sofá y no se piensa salir de casa tan a menudo.

To ease the arduous task of sitting nice and warm we are going to review the "Compendium of Crochet Techniques" by Jan Eaton. 

Call it a book, call it the bible. And I mean it, because you need to have the manual where you can find all kind of technical explanations and ideas.

Jan Eaton, internationally known by her needlework and textile design has published plenty of books. This particulary is not quite new as it was published a couple of years ago, but it is so useful that it will always help you to find all you need for any kind of project you have in mind, and why not, to give you some other ideas of what to do now and how to make it.

Para facilitar esa ardua tarea de estar sentado a gusto y calentitos, este mes vamos a por "300 trucos, técnicas y secretos de ganchillo" de Jan Eaton. Llámalo libro, llámalo biblia. Y digo esto porque no te puede faltar el manual donde encontrar todo tipo de explicaciones técnicas e ideas.

Jan Eaton, conocida internacionalmente por su manejo de las agujas y diseños textiles, tiene una barbaridad de libros. Este en particular ya tiene unos años, pero es tan útil que siempre encontrarás lo que necesites para cualquier tipo de proyecto que tengas en mente, y por qué no, para darte ideas sobre qué puedes empezar y cómo hacerlo.

This book is divided in several sections and contains (take a good breath): step-by-step photos, diagrams and instructions to guide you through the whole process. From how to choose the needle, the yarn, how to read patterns or charts, all about tension, how to block, how to design scarfs or shawls, explanations of all kind of stitches, intarsia patterns, how to join yarns, how to work in rounds, how to group colours, how to dye yarns, how to fit blocks together... everything. In short, seven chapters that will surely help you to understand how to make everything you can imagine. In addition, there is a section in almost all the chapters called “try it” or “fix it” where you can practice what you've´ve learnt adding some variations.

El libro se divide en varias secciones y contiene (coge aire): fotografías paso a paso, diagramas e instrucciones que sirven de guía en todo momento. Desde cómo elegir la aguja, la lana, cómo leer patrones o esquemas, cómo trabajar con la tensión, cómo bloquear, diseño de piezas tipo bufandas o chales, explicaciones sobre todos los tipos de puntos, patrones de intarsia, cómo unir las lanas, trabajar en vueltas, agrupar colores, teñir lanas, unir piezas... todo. En definitiva, siete capítulos que te ayudarán sin duda a entender cómo hacer todo lo que te puedas imaginar. Además, en casi todas las unidades encontrarás un apartado llamado “prueba” o “consejos” donde podrás practicar lo aprendido introduciendo variaciones.

Karl goes to Ireland, my 40th birthday and a gift for you

Going to Ireland has been one of my dreams since I was 18. I don't know exactly why but, honestly, all things Irish attract me. Starting with movies (I don't miss any movie about irish people!) and going through music, landscapes castles and Guinness, of course. What's wrong with me, doc?

Ir a Irlanda fue mi sueño desde los 18 años. Yo no sé muy bien porqué, la verdad, pero todo lo irlandés me atrae. Empezando por las películas, (no me pierdo una peli sobre irlandeses!) pasando por la música, los paisajes, los castillos y, claro está, la Guinness. Qué me pasa, doctor?

It was my birthday last week, I turned nothing but 40 years old! I don't know if you've noticed but lately, when people turn 40 they celebrate it like a wedding. It must be that during the 30' s you still have a tiny excuse to be an immature and fool around, but when you're 40... "You are a grown woman now baby, so stop playing with dolls"  No way... I`m planning to play even more.

La semana pasada fue mi cumpleaños. 40 añazos, ni más ni menos! Últimamente se ha puesto de moda celebrarlos como si fuese una boda, parece que durante los 30 aún tenemos excusa para ser unos inmaduros alelaos, pero cuando llegan los 40 ya se acabó la tontería: "Ya eres una mujer adulta, baby, deja de jugar con muñecos." Ni de coña... pienso jugar cada vez más.

           

So, in order to celebrate my 40th birthday I went to accomplish my 18's dream, bringing a doll in my pocket all day, and taking pictures of him every step. And I had the best time ever. My expectatives were massively huge regarding to all these years dreaming of it, but this trip has exceed them successfully.

Así que para celebrar mis 40 años me fui a cumplir mi sueño de los 18, llevando conmigo un muñeco en el bolsillo todo el día, y haciéndole fotos a cada paso que daba. Y me lo pasé genial. Tenía muchas expectativas, creadas a lo largo de tantos años de deseo, pero este viaje las ha superado con creces.

And if I had such an amazing time, just imagine about Karl... Since you know he loves Nature, and that's one thing we've seen: Nature. All kind of trees and plants, mountains, lakes... Plus, I'm so lucky to have been born in November, when the landscape is so beautiful with all the Autumn colours. Everything was green and orange, just as their flag.

Y si yo he disfrutado, no os quiero ni contar Karl... Como sabéis, él es un amante de la Naturaleza, y si algo hemos visto estos días son árboles, plantas, montañas y lagos. Además, tengo la gran suerte de haber nacido en Noviembre, con lo que los paisajes otoñales están en todo lo suyo, naranjas y verdes como su bandera.

           

Karl took pictures of each and every plant he've seen. I haven't post them all because is such a boredom, but what I've been doing is posting Karl's adventures in Ireland on my I Instagram.

Karl se ha hecho fotos con todos los árboles que ha visto. No os las he puesto todas porque ya aburren, pero sí que os he ido contando las aventuras de Karl en Irlanda por mi Instagram, en vivo y en directo, que es más divertido.

La de las bolitas

With bubbles, success is guaranteed, and with colour bubbles you don't want to know... We're mad about bubbles. My students dream about them since the first day : "when are we going to make the bubbles, when?" But, oh dear, when the day finally comes, the story changes... "I can't make it, it looks smashed, mine are not as cute as yours..."

Las bolitas son siempre un éxito, y no os hablo ya de las de colores. Nos vuelven locas. Las alumnas, desde el primer día que las ven sueñan con ellas y preguntan cada día :"cuándo vamos a ver las bolitas?" Ah amiga, pero cuando llega el día de ver las bolitas la historia cambia por completo... que si no me sale, que si se me chafa, que si no quedan como las tuyas...

      

Actually it's, as always, a matter of practice. AND DON'T YOU CROCHET TIGHT!! Yes, I'm talking to you! Oh my god, how do you like to make it tight! This block is nothing but a few bubble stitches among single crochet stitches. I follow the distribution that Jan Eaton suggests in the book "200 crochet blocks", it's number 42, but of course you can make it your own way. You'll find a pattern of how to make the bubble stitch here.

En realidad es, como siempre, cuestión de práctica. Y NO APRIETES!!! Que os conozco y madre mía cómo os gusta apretar! Esta aplicación no es más que unas cuantas piñas distribuidas por una aplicación de punto bajo. Yo seguí el orden que propone Jan Eaton en el libro "200 labores de ganchillo", es la número 42 y ella la llama "Pompones alternados", pero también podéis inventar vosotras un orden e incluso hacer varias, cada una con un orden diferente a la otra. Encontrarás un tutorial de cómo tejer el punto de piña aquí.
